Ep.212 Elizabeth Power - Ministry of Arts Podcast Mar 23, 2023
    Show notes

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Elizabeth Power (@ElizabethPowerArt )

Bursting with colour and energy, Elizabeth Power’s paintings exude a warmth and vibrancy. Based in St Leonards on Sea, UK, Power’s work has a colour palette rich in coral pinks, forest greens and cool blues.

Drawing inspiration from colourists such as Matisse, Hockney, Milton Avery and Tal R, Power’s loose and free abstraction takes this to the next level.

Power co-founded the Babes In Arms Collective with fellow artist Annie Mackin, which champions artist mother’s in the Hastings and St Leonard’s area.

Ep.211 Billy Childish - Ministry of Arts Podcast Mar 13, 2023
    Show notes

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Billy Childish (@billychildish_for_it_is_he)

Billy Childish is an English painter, author, poet, photographer, film maker, singer and guitarist. Since the late 1970s, Childish has been prolific in creating music, writing and visual art. He has led and played in bands including the Pop Rivets, Thee Milkshakes, Thee Headcoats, and the Musicians of the British Empire, primarily working in the genres of garage rock, punk and surf and releasing more than 100 albums.

He is a consistent advocate for amateurism and free emotional expression. Childish co-founded the Stuckism art movement with Charles Thomson in 1999, which he left in 2001. Since then a new evaluation of Childish's standing in the art world has been under way, culminating with the publication of a critical study of Childish's working practice by the artist and writer Neal Brown, with an introduction by Peter Doig, which describes Childish as "one of the most outstanding, and often misunderstood, figures on the British art scene". He is a visiting lecturer at Rochester Independent College.

In July 2014 Childish was awarded an honorary Doctor of Arts Degree from the University of Kent. He is known for his explicit and prolific work - he has detailed his love life and childhood sexual abuse, notably in his early poetry and the novels My Fault (1996), Notebooks of a Naked Youth (1997), Sex Crimes of the Futcher (2004) - The Idiocy of Idears (2007), and in several of his songs, notably in the instrumental "Paedophile" (1992) (featuring a photograph of the man who sexually abused him on the front cover) and "Every Bit of Me" (1993). From 1981 until 1985 Childish had a relationship with artist Tracey Emin

    PART 2/2

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Steve Lowe founder of L-13 (@l13lightindustrialworkshop)

    L-13 LIGHT INDUSTRIAL WORKSHOP

Private Ladies & Gentlemen's Club for Art, Leisure & the Disruptive Betterment of Culture

The L-13 Light Industrial Workshop is not a gallery, a publisher, nor do we represent artists. Neither are we a real Ladies and Gentlemen’s Club, a Light Industrial Workshop, and we most certainly are not an art collective.

Founded by artist Steve Lowe in 2003 – initially under the name the aquarium (2003 – 2006) then THE AQUARIUM L-13 (2006 – 2008) – the L-13 Light Industrial Workshop is a creative platform, spiritual home and technical epicentre for a small group of artists that Lowe has found himself working with – both in collaborative venture and by way of support for the individual artists. The L-13 HQ in Clerkenwell is also physical home to the Harry Adams studio, an 1825 Albion Press, The Patented Finger of God Painting Machine and a miniature poodle known as The Beast.

We like making special things at prices people can afford and will subsidise our own produce where we think necessary and appropriate. We also like to make and sell special things that cost lots of money for people who can afford it. The sale of such things helps us subsidise those less lucrative projects.

The key artists currently active with L-13 are:

Harry Adams, Jimmy Cauty, Billy Childish and Jamie Reid

Sasha Bowles - MoA Bonus Episode 27 Feb 26, 2023
    Show notes

In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Sasha Bowles (@sashabowles1)

Sasha Bowles is a London based multi-disciplinary artist, working across painting, objects, film and installation. Bowles creates artefacts and installations housed within provisional environments that are a means of storytelling but are not a narrative. Her practice is an evolving loop, dealing with illusion, intervention and metamorphosis; immersing herself in historical tropes encountered in houses of grandeur and often using as a jumping off point; the Baroque bravura of artifice.

You are asked to enter through a backdoor of theatricality and pass into hallways of reconstructed grandeur, where the once grand patrons of illustrious houses are reimagined alongside metaphysical surreal like artefacts. Through appropriating once familiar objects, old master paintings, found ornaments and etchings fallen from historical books; Bowles erases, mischievously rearranges and discretely brushes over her unwitting sitters and artefacts. Using elements of the museum, the collection and display, the works are re-contextualised, opening new interpretive possibilities.

The object interacts with its context and vice versa; by playfully twisting her narratives presented in facsimiles of environments, Sasha is examining the boundaries that cross between spaces and how the display and context of objects and artworks effects our reading and engagement with it. The known becomes uncanny and challenges us to re-evaluate our interpretation and engagement of the familiar.

Ep.209 Charlotte Rose - Ministry of Arts Podcast Feb 20, 2023
    Show notes

In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Charlotte Rose (@char.lotteroseart)

Charlotte Rose is a self-taught artist residing in North London. In 2021, Rose held her debut solo show, ‘I Quit Last Week’, which centred around nostalgic branding from the late 20th century.

The sell-out show featured 15 large-scale acrylic on plywood paintings. The aim of the exhibition was to prescribe new truths to old illusions, with each piece being an exploration of the ‘dream sold by ad companies to sell poisonous goods.’

Rose’s extensive social network and soaring profile has brought her work to the attention of celebrities, including Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Yung Blud, both of whom have commissioned work from her. Via her art, Rose intends to evoke consumer nostalgia, while challenging its intention.

    Gallery No.32 & Winter Sculpture Park - MoA Bonus Episode 25 Feb 16, 2023
    Show notes

In this Bonus Episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Meg & Kieran of Gallery No.32 about their Winter Sculpture Park (@gallery_no.32)

Introducing Gallery No.32's third WINTER SCULPTURE PARK, an annual outdoor exhibition of contemporary sculpture and public art.

Gallery No.32’s WINTER SCULPTURE PARK is a group exhibition of UK and internationally-based artists exploring how today’s liquid times have made room for an alternative art world to emerge. The exhibition invites 40 artists to place their work across 4 acres of open grassland in Bexley, South East London. Braving the elements, the sculptures will stand the vicissitudes of British weather for 10 weeks, becoming a part of the natural environment around them.

WINTER SCULPTURE PARK provides an option to reroute, swapping the white walls and closed doors of gallery spaces for the blue skies and open terrains of the great outdoors. It is offering artist and audience a unique chance to explore contemporary art and performance amongst London’s natural landscape. Here, art is offered to all, FREE OF CHARGE.

Exhibiting innovative and ambitious artworks directly in the public realm, Gallery No.32 and the annual WINTER SCULPTURE PARK bring art to unexpected places, expanding the reach of culture through discovery & exploration.

Gallery No.32 is an outdoor exhibition and project space providing accessible opportunities for artists at any stage of their career. Free to show and free to view, artists can explore the broadest possibilities of their practice, while offering art to new audiences directly in the public realm. By taking artists out of the institution and placing them in the natural landscape, Gallery No.32 is altering how art is seen, and who art is for, upturning the typical white-wall model and digging the tracks for an alternative art-world.

    OPENING PARTY: Saturday 18 February 2023, 12-5PM

    19 February - 29 April 2023

    Gallery No.32, Bexley, DA5 3QG
