    Ep.227 Baker & Borowski - Ministry of Arts Podcast Jul 30, 2023
    Show notes

Today's episode is one of several featuring some of the artists from the 2023 Kensington & Chelsea Art Week/Trail, for info go to: https://www.kcaw.co.uk or @KCAWlondon

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Lee Baker of Baker & Borowski @skipgallery

A partnership between artists and curators Lee Baker and Catherine Borowski, Baker & Borowski cultivates and commissions incursions of art into unexpected places.

Baker & Borowski is an artist-curator partnership between sculptor and placemaking specialist Catherine Borowski and painter and music producer Lee Baker. Catherine is the founder and creative director of Produce UK, an event-production consultancy and cultural programmer that works with brands, businesses and developers to conceive and deliver experiential placemaking strategies ranging from installations and exhibitions to large-scale festivals.

The duo is on a mission to bring unexpected eruptions of art into the everyday urban landscape and in 2017 they re-conceived the idea of the exhibition space, launching SKIP Gallery – an ongoing series of collaborative, site-specific artworks housed in skips on public sites. With 15 skip shows under their belt, collaborating with artists such as David Shrigley and Jeremy Deller, Baker & Borowski have spread their wings to begin a new venture, Graphic Rewilding, creating large scale artworks that introduce the diversity and colours of the natural world into urban environments. With these images they hope to inspire and encourage people to connect a little more with nature.

Ep.225 Misha Milovanovich - Ministry of Arts Podcast Jul 16, 2023
    Show notes

Today's episode is one of several featuring some of the artists from the 2023 Kensington & Chelsea Art Week/Trail, for info go to: https://www.kcaw.co.uk

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Misha Milovanovich (@mishamilovanovich )

Misha is a Belgrade-born artist living and working in London. She works across several mediums, from sculpture to painting and digital art. Characterised by vivid colour, optical movement and energetic visual cadences, Misha's visual work fuses a diverse repertoire of images and forms.

Misha's work is often a symphonic abstraction. Her colourful, densely layered works are held in a state of tension between order and chaos, rational structure and spontaneity. She combines depth and surface relief, orchestrating bold contrasts of form, texture and space in her pictures. An intimate colour palette of bodily fluids - red, pink, white, black, yellow and brown - animate the writhing forms and the refracted memories of cartoonish cultural production.

Misha’s work is always spirited, humorous and filled with joy. Her playful totemic sculptures, reflect a kind of prism which defines a new form of appropriation and reference-making.

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Josephine Chime @jaccartist

Detangling MBS: One Hoopers Court, Knightsbridge Underground Station

‘Detangling The MBS’ is a mixed media sculpture, a response to the confining narratives and contradicting messages of how women should present themselves. Chime’s practice delves into skewing the dominant notion of aesthetic goals, pulling from ancestral symbolic practices and pictographic messages to inform new female forms that transgress what is socially desirable.

MBS means mind, body and soul. Detangling The MBS is a call to service oneself, to create a flow of healthy self-reflection which may enact change. Detangling The MBS speaks of action, a constant action to become a version of yourself that can recognise the myriad of life’s offerings and self-worth. Starting with the self to loosen the knots found in the heart, the muscles and psyche it is a monumental step in feeling free from life’s expectations and societal constraints.

Lucy Oates is a London based multidisciplinary artist

“I designed a piece for KCAW based off collages I’ve been doing over the years in response to my surrounding environments.

For me painting and designing murals is about uplifting areas and injecting pots of colour in to otherwise mundane/ neglected settings. Colour is really important to me and is something I really enjoy playing around with in my practice, I wanted to use colours that to me represent fun happy emotions in this piece.”

    Show notes

Today's episode is one of several featuring some of the artists from the 2023 Kensington & Chelsea Art Week/Trail, for info go to: https://www.kcaw.co.uk or @KCAWlondon

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Saira Jamieson @sairajamieson

Born in London, to Pakistani parents, Saira Jamieson was raised in a household of both immense cultural pride as well as deep religiosity. These levers, were the inspiration and rebellious fuel of her early artistic impulses. Through painting and drawing, Saira found escapism, creating otherworldly terrains of symbolism.

Her diarised sketches and “Sarabesque” scripture like forms became a secret language. Unknowingly, it would impact the rest of her life.

Breaking down barriers and preconceptions inside and outside her culture is a constant. Having fought so long to be seen and have a voice, she and her work have now matured. Confident in her skin, she uses not just her art but her voice to champion the unrepresented and particularly female creatives.

Malgorzata is an artist based in London whose practice is located between sculpture, public art, installation, costume, and performance.

She crosses the boundaries of disciplines, shifting the functions of both wearable objects and the body, or interacting with the surrounding space.

Her works take into consideration the place, environment and spectators who are often becoming unaware participants of the artwork itself.

Exploring the phenomena of biology, nature, as well as the social and technological aspects of our world, leads her into the sphere of experimentation with scale, connection and communication between the material and immaterial realms.

Ep.220 Birungi Kawooya & Bokani - Ministry of Arts Podcast Jun 05, 2023
    Show notes

Today's episode is one of several featuring some of the artists from the 2023 Kensington & Chelsea Art Week/Trail, for info go to: https://www.kcaw.co.uk or @KCAWlondon

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Birungi Kawooya & Bokani (@Birungiart& @bokani)

Birungi Kawooya: My art passionately embodies the beauty of the African diaspora with a focus on dance, nature and wellbeing. I take inspiration from Ugandan classical Kiganda dance styles, flash dancing by The Nicholas Brothers and hiplet from Homer Bryant, interpreting these influences in my vibrant collages using layers of Ugandan batik fabrics and cutout card. I enjoy the challenge of capturing these complex and sophisticated dance moves in my 2-dimensional art and am passionate about helping you to express your artistic own vision by creating your own artwork in my Mindful African Art workshops.

Bokani: Bokani’s work is characterised by spontaneous, vibrant colour, fuelled by an exploration of themes and motifs engaging the viewer intellectually, emotionally and spiritually. Painting has empowered her to move past the childhood loss of both parents to resolve questions of global female identity, black African heritage and belonging.

Black Womxn at Rest: In an arresting and repetitive billboard style, this design spells out and depicts Black womxn resting pairing Birungi’s Black women figurative style with Bokani’s swirling paintings.

The choice of bodies at rest will represent the diversity of Black womxn and normalizing everyday Black womanhood at rest.
