Ep.219 Sarah Graham - Ministry of Arts Podcast Jun 01, 2023
    Show notes

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Sarah Graham (@sarahgraham_art)

British painter Sarah Graham was born in Hitchin in 1977, and works almost exclusively in oil on canvas. She completed a BA (hons) in Fine Art painting from De Montfort University, Leicester in 2000, and has been pursuing her practice ever since.

From 2001 - 2007 she exhibited at independent galleries and art fairs in the UK and overseas. From 2007 - 2014 she signed with a major UK fine art publisher, Washington Green, and her work became widely available as limited edition prints, alongside originals, throughout the UK. As of the beginning of 2015, Sarah began self publishing limited edition prints, whilst working on commissions and new paintings for exhibitions and art fairs as an independent artist working from her studio in Letchworth, Hertfordshire.

In 2012, Sarah was commissioned by the British band Kaiser Chiefs to paint the album cover of their singles collection ‘Souvenir’, which was released worldwide. Her work is also owned by Standard Chartered Bank, who commissioned several pieces by Sarah, including a self-portrait, for their vast global collection of contemporary portraits.

Sarah’s work is studied in schools throughout the UK and abroad, and in 2015, she even featured on the GCSE art exam paper.

TOMA- MoA Bonus Episode 32 May 28, 2023
    Show notes

In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to The Other MA (TOMA)(@TheOtherMA)

The Other MA (TOMA) is an 18-month artist-run education model and nomadic exhibition space based in Southend-on- Sea which supports artists who have faced barriers accessing art education and the ‘art world’.

The Other MA (TOMA) is an independent, not for profit art organisation, providing a free or low cost means for anyone to engage with contemporary art. We endeavour to make all our activities as friendly and inclusive as possible for everyone.

TOMA’s education programme, exhibitions and public events are open to anyone who would like to participate, learn, and engage with art in Southend-on-Sea.

At TOMA we believe it is our responsibility as an organisation to stop our output and spaces from being disabling to the public. This is largely known as the Social Model of disability. We understand that making TOMA truly accessible to all is a process of continual learning and adapting. We are committed to undertaking every effort possible to ensure TOMA is accessible to everyone.

Ep.218 Peter Morris - Ministry of Arts Podcast May 21, 2023
    Show notes

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Peter Morris (@petermorrisarchitects)

Peter Morris is primarily an architect, who has been running his own practice for over a decade. But his other creative work – as an artist, illustrator, model-maker and designer of products and interiors – has always sat alongside his architectural work, and he loves to bring the colour, quirkiness and joy of his artworks to his buildings wherever possible.

The sculpture joining KCAW ART TRAIL this summer is a Wendy House version of a house that Peter is about to start building for his family, in North London, called The Cloud House – and the story of how this lifelong dream came into being has deep roots in the K&C borough.

Commenting on the theme of this year’s Kensington + Chelsea Art Week, Peter said: “Kensington & Chelsea changed me, and this artwork reflects and celebrates that change.”

Ep.217 Sophie Derrick - Ministry of Arts Podcast May 14, 2023
    Show notes

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Sophie Derrick (@SophieDerrickArt)

Sophie Derrick's work very much focuses on portraiture, but with the use of both painting and photography this genre is skewed and manipulated, and the transformative properties of paint are pushed to the limit. She photographs the act of painting onto her own skin and then paints on top of the photographs, creating a layering of image of paint and painted image, blurring the boundaries between the two. The 'self' is lost, buried beneath the paint, and the notion of portraiture is questioned. The body becomes both object and subject within Sophie Derrick's work.

There is a constant shift between dualities; painting and photography, absence and presence, and reality and fiction. The painting, photographic and layering techniques, and bold, vibrant colours used within the work become obstacles to reality, distorting and creating absurd and abstracted portraits. Sophie Derrick's work incorporates the two mediums of painting and photography. She has a great interest in the materiality and substance of paint, and execute this interest through photography, creating a juxtaposition of the two mediums.

Ep.216 Holly Stevenson - Ministry of Arts Podcast May 03, 2023
    Show notes

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Holly Stevenson (@holly__stevenson)

Holly Stevenson makes fluid ceramic forms that explore Sigmund Freud’s favourite ashtray and last cigar as an analytical metaphor.

Her vessels diligently embody the ashtray and cigar as though they were two gendered male and female forms, the yonic ovular dish and the cylindrical phallic cigar, as she reconfigures them into a material language of her own.

Holly graduated from Chelsea College of Art and Design Fine Art MA in 2011 with the generous help of the Stanley Picker Trust and was awarded the MFI Flat Time House Graduate Award, supported by the John Latham Foundation. Recently she was selected for the Mother Art Prize 2020, had her first solo show at Sid Motion Gallery and been awarded her first public art commission by The CoLAB Temple for The Artist’s Garden.

Ep.215 Ant Hamlyn - Ministry of Arts Podcast Apr 23, 2023
    Show notes

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Ant Hamlyn (@anthamlyn)

Working across a pollination of hand made and digital fabrication processes, Ant Hamlyn’s works delve into our relationship and fluctuating enthusiasm towards contemporary life. His sculptures regularly have anthropomorphic elements and work with metaphor, technology and the interplay between hard and soft to create moments of tactility and surprise through material and visual obscurity. Often creating relics from a recognizable yet parallel space.

Hamlyn’s conceptual framework is recently taken from plants, nostalgia, preservation and magic. With the exception of a number of larger kinetic installations, the majority of Hamlyn’s works are meticulously sewn by hand. This delicate interplay between materiality, scale and context are intrinsic to the simultaneous creation of mystery, familiarity and deception.

His works are held in private international collections. His studio is currently in West London.

Ep.214 Charlie Haydn Taylor - Ministry of Arts Podcast Apr 12, 2023
    Show notes

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Charlie Haydn Taylor (@charliehtart)

Charlie Haydn Taylor was born in Jersey, Channel Islands and is now based in London.

His work evokes a sense of contemplation and isolation, where the lines between the fictional and autobiographical collide. His most recent works respond to the emotional weight of isolation that can occur when living in a major city, paradoxically surrounded by millions of others. With regards to this, his work looks to convey a sense of the difference between private and public persona, where the viewer is able to place themselves into the pieces as a first-person participant. The stylistic approach of using both photographic realism collaged alongside flat, block colour is done in order to create a new, fictional reality where the interiors exist but still appear recognisable due to the sum of its parts. The inclusion of various objects ranging from books to letters as well as household objects is an attempt to give the viewer markers on the narrative that is occurring within each scene.

Ep.213 INKTERAKTIV- Ministry of Arts Podcast Apr 02, 2023
    Show notes

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to INKTERAKTIV(@inkteraktiv)

INKTERAKTIV, aka Caro Clarke is a London based Urban Paper Artist.

She works mostly with fluorescent paper strips using paper quilling techniques, and playing with paper and light.

Born in Paris, France in 1976, she has spent most of her life travelling, finally settling in London in 2006.

Following a degree in Art History & Fine Art with an emphasis on paper, bookbinding and packaging, Caro went on to receive a BFA in Graphic Design & Photography from SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design) in 1998. Her physical tools were replaced by screens and soon the original plan of becoming an artist left way for the digital age.

After 30+ years working as a Creative Director and digital designer on virtual experiences and installations for advertising agencies, design studios and private clients ranging from the likes of Vodafone, Heineken, Virgin, Mercure Hotels, NHS and Lilly to name a few, Caro hung up her hat as Creative Director to focus more on her initial love for all things paper art.

Caro's work emphasises the delicacy of paper versus its architectural structure within a minimalist setting. She draws inspiration for her pieces from the urban landscape and her own travels as well as her love for neon lighting, typography, architecture and geometrical patterns.

She strives to be environmentally friendly in her practice and use of materials.

Caro campaigns for global dog welfare, climate change & sustainability, homelessness, ageism and women's rights.

She works mostly from her East London based studio, either solo or collaborating with other like minded artists around the world.

She occasionally teaches art, branding and online marketing for BA and MA programs at several universities across London as well as running workshops.
