      Effect on Emotions
      • Mindfulness is paying attention to my feelings, befriending myself. Befriending yourself, that's the purpose of mindfulness. It is not Zen, floating away on a cloud of ice-cream. The purpose of mindfulness is to befriend what's happening in you so you can do something about it.
      Thoughts on Breathing
      • The breath is a paradigm for everything. When the sun rises in the east, it's heat causes the earth to exhale. That exhale is called transpiration. It releases it's breath, which then begins the cycles of life.
      • You can think about breath in terms of, we're living and dying in every moment. That means we're starting over in every moment. There is death and rebirth in every moment. And that's what the breath signifies to me.

Terri Lonowski, M.Ed., is an accomplished thought leader, whose body of work in evolutionary communication is timely, impactful and deeply relevant, given today’s chaos and ‘loneliness pandemic’. Terri has had the honor of leading national Human Centered Design teams, which embraced empathy and Design Thinking, to showcase workforce innovations for the Obama Administration at The White House not once, but twice. Through this, professional and educational accomplishments, along with her own loneliness journey and inspiration from her Grandma Helga, Terri distinguished the five-elements of Soulful Listening™. When applied in our lives, these easily repeatable elements ease feelings of loneliness, create fulfilling connections, help us break free from limitations and inspire greater human potential.

    • I fortunately later developed them and got to a place where I could have an understanding that those actions were from a place of pain within him.
    • With that comes a soothing balm of love that could surround it all. At that moment when that was happening, that was rough. It knocks your self-esteem to the ground and a lot of self-doubt can creep in.

    Effect on Emotions
    • Mindfulness has given me the ability to explore my emotions without judgment and basically understand the temperature, size and space of each emotion and allow me to be ok with that emotion so that I can release the emotions that are unnecessary with love.
    Thoughts on Breathing
    • Breathing is incredible. I personally have a feeling that the reason the cold showers give me so much energy is not just because of the temperature, but because they cause me to start breathing so deeply.
    • So breathing is the key and if you are ever in such a panic state that you cant even conceptualize the idea of meditating, forcing yourself to breathe is the emergency solution.
    Suggested Resources

    Bullying Story
    • When you break down bullying, it's a human being that is looking for some sort of validation or attention or love, and through their recklessness, as a lot of us are as kids, just having fun, laughing, crazy, just doing whatever we do, we find something that gets peoples’ attention.
    • Think about a little baby who is trying to get attention and then it knocks something over and the mom responds. Then the kid starts laughing and now realizes that if it knocks stuff over, it’s going to get the attention and the validation it wants. The same thing happens in school.
    • I genuinely think that the reason that someone is bullying, especially in younger years, has little or nothing to do with an actual issue or problem or pain that they’re having in their lives and other times it does have a lot to do with them expressing some other pain or challenge they’re dealing with maybe at home.
    • That being said, the main thing that I’ve experienced was that person in Los Angeles taking advantage of me as a young person who was motivated and driven to be successful in the music industry.

    • I get to enjoy the good emotions. I get to understand what some of what we call bad emotions are telling me. It's a feedback loop. For example what is anger telling me, what is fear telling me? If I understand those things and label them, negative feelings go down.
    • We get to experience the richness of emotion like music, we get to hear all the notes, and to feel it in your body.
    • So now, because of mindfulness, I get to feel love at such a rich and deep level.
    Thoughts on Breathing
    • Breathing is everything. Breathing is our connection to life and when you breathe in, (the word inspiration means ‘to breathe into').
    • If there was only one thing I could ever teach, it would be breath work, because our breath is connected to our nervous system which is connected to how we function.

Natural Nootropics to Enhance Meditation & Calm Your Mind; David Tomen Sep 16, 2020
    Show notes

David Tomen knows firsthand the power of nootropics. He’s considered by many to be the foremost nootropics expert in the field. He’s the author of Head First as well as the founder of the Nootropics Expert web site, a site devoted to optimizing your brain with nootropic supplements. He joins us today to talk about the power of nootropics from stacking to dosage, and much more. David’s journey began when he was diagnosed with adult ADD and put on Ritalin. It seemed to really help his ability to focus, until 2012 when he ended up in the ER. He had a laundry list of symptoms about 2 pages long and his doctors did extensive tests (including for Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, which came back negative). The only diagnosis he was given was hypothyroid. Determined to find a natural way to treat his attention issues along with his memory function, he went into full exploration mode of nootropics. He tried multiple combinations of supplements, various dosages and lifestyle changes until he found what works best for him. Today he has a specific stack he takes every day and also uses his years of extensive research and experimentation to help others through his books, podcasts, copywriting and personal consultations.

    • Book: Head First: The Complete Guide To Healing and Optimizing Your Brain With Nootropic Supplements by David Tomen
    Origins of the word Nootropics
    • There was a man named Dr. Cornelius E. Giurgea who was a psychologist and chemist. He was working with Pavlov back in St. Petersburg back in 1963 and he invented a thing called piracetam. Piracetam was technically the first nootropic.
    • He invented piracetam to solve motion sickness. It turned out piracetam did not help motion sickness but it was a cognitive enhancer. It helped people's memory, so it was put out as a prescription drug. Since 1963 there have been many derivatives of piracetams called racetams.
    Nootropics Misconceptions
    • That you need a prescription to get nootropics.
    • We consider nootropics as cocoa, caffeine, CBD oil, zinc, and vitamin D because they all influence the brain in one way or another.
    Most Popular Topics
    • People seem to be most interested in specific substances.
    • I'm getting a lot of traffic to the Lion's Mane page.
    • The best nootropics for anxiety is popular right now, probably because of COVID19.

    • I had an experience around the concept of bullying. About 10 years ago I was doing some research with a colleague of mine who works with EI4Change, Doug Haynes. Doug and I were researching this concept of resilience.
    • Everybody was talking about resilience, but what does it mean? We put together something called, Images of Resilience. Later, we set about designing and creating cards that supported the field of bullying.
    • We covered confidence and assertiveness and rising to the challenge, with a knight fighting a dragon. Both of the cards have now been integrated into the coaching toolbox. This has resulted in wonderful, cathartic conversations around bullying in organizations, schools, and industry.
