    Nursing & Mental Health: Exploring the Ongoing Challenges of the Workforce May 06, 2022
    Show notes Lauren Ghazal, PhD, joined Michigan Minds for the National Nurses Week Special Series. Ghazal is a postdoctoral research fellow at the U-M School of Nursing Center for Improving Patient and Population Health (CIPPH) and the Rogel Cancer Center. Her two main areas of research focus on how to improve the quality of life of adolescents and young adults diagnosed with cancer, and the nursing workforce where she’s been involved with projects that explore experiences of nurses working throughout the pandemic. As a nurse practitioner and current researcher, she provides insight on the challenges that nurses have been and are currently facing, and offers resources regarding mental health support for healthcare workers.

    Resources and Support: DPSS Officers on Sexual Assault Awareness Month Apr 21, 2022
    Show notes

    Maureen Burke and Margie Pillsbury, police officers at the U-M Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS), joined this episode of Michigan Minds. Burke currently serves as the Outreach and Engagement Coordinator for the Special Victims Unit (SVU), and Pillsbury serves as the unit’s Investigations Coordinator. Burke and Pillsbury provide insight on the various services and resources offered by DPSS’ Special Victims Unit, including providing survivors with information about reporting processes and options. They describe the unit’s goal, which is to empower survivors to make informed decisions and remove barriers for them when reporting to increase the number of reports on campus. The SVU also provides information and safety planning, even if the survivor doesn't want to file a police report, where officers connect people with advocacy to ensure their questions are answered.

    Sustainability Series: Building Sustainable Campus Communities Apr 15, 2022

    As Earth Month continues, highlighting U-M’s efforts to create a more sustainable campus community is of the utmost importance. As part of these continued efforts, Student Life Sustainability Manager, Alex Bryan, works to further sustainability on campus and with students through multiple different programs and events which help educate and promote the benefits of living sustainably. In this episode of Michigan Minds, Bryan discusses the university’s sustainability efforts, Planet Blue Student Leaders and how he and others work to gain student involvement to help reach our overall campus goals, specifically utilizing the ‘campus as lab’ approach.

    Sustainability Series: Climate Change Problem Solving Apr 15, 2022

    How does climate change interface with society? Richard (Ricky) Rood works to answer that question, and talked with Michigan Minds about how his work. Rood is professor at the U-M Department of Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering (CLASP), with a courtesy appointment at the U-M School for Environment and Sustainability (UMSEAS). He is also the Dow Sustainability Distinguished Faculty Fellow in the College of Engineering. His primary research interests are on climate change problem solving—in particular climate change and its interfaces with different aspects of society, and how to accelerate the use of climate information, planning and design in management. He explains how he uses climate change information to educate students on climate change problem solving, specifically when teaching students from a variety of fields.

Caitie Hausman, associate professor at the Ford School of Public Policy, studies how different electricity markets contribute to climate change and air pollution, and how climate and environmental policies impact electricity and natural gas markets.

    Sustainability Series: Great Lakes Water Levels Apr 15, 2022
    Show notes

    The vast majority of the Earth’s fresh surface water is stored in lakes, and the Great Lakes hold a significant portion — about 20 percent — of that fresh water. Drew Gronewold, associate professor in the School for Environment and Sustainability, is working to better understand water level variability on large lake systems, and how climate change and anthropogenic impacts can affect the long term water balance and levels. Most of his work is done “right in our backyard” on the Great Lakes.

    Gronewold, who also holds adjunct appointments in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, joined Michigan Minds to talk about his research on water levels, how they use data to model and forecast for future decisions, and the overall significance of the Great Lakes fresh water system.

    How does renewable energy impact local communities — especially those in rural areas? Sarah Mills, research scientist at the Graham Sustainability Institute and lecturer in the School for Environment and Sustainability, is dedicated to understanding those localized impacts, the positive and negative. Mills joined Michigan Minds to talk about her work looking at rural communities in Michigan that are often the hosts for large-scale wind and solar projects.

    U-M SAPAC: Preventing Violence and Providing Support Apr 01, 2022
    Show notes

    Sexual Assault Awareness Month, observed in April, was established to highlight sexual violence as a public health issue and educate communities on how to prevent it. Across the University of Michigan, there are numerous units dedicated to supporting individuals who have experieced sexual assault and educating the community on prevention strategies. One of those units is SAPAC: the Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center. In this episode of Michigan Minds, SAPAC associate director Anne Huhman outlines what SAPAC is and how they are committed to prevention education, offer confidential support, and provide resources, training, and programs for the campus community. She also highlights some of the upcoming events taking place throughout April, planned by students, to bring the community together while raising awareness. With five different student volunteer programs and more than 150 volunteers coordinating events, there is something for everyone.
