    Micheaux Mission

Vincent Williams and Len Webb have started an amazing journey to watch and review every African-American film released in theaters. Their passion project, the Micheaux Mission, honors Oscar Micheaux, a trailblazing Black filmmaker. Their enthusiasm and dedication are truly inspiring as they seek the perfect wine to pair with Pam Grier’s Coffy, find five movies since 1985 that don’t feature Samuel L. Jackson, and connect with other film fans who share Len’s view on The Last Dragon. Their commitment to celebrating and examining African-American cinema is both commendable and uplifting. Welcome to the Mission!

SPOILER ALERT --- The Men of Micheaux share a kind word for the winners of color at the 2022 Emmy Awards and a stray thought or two on Jimmy Kimmel. Shawn and Marlon Wayans as a comedy duo are rehashed via listener mail. Len relives a Scott Baio moment. Vincent goes Six Degrees from D'Urville to Anthony Michael Hall and Millie Bobby Brown. Then (46:45) the Men review Regina Hall's mesmerizing performance in The Eco Sisters' Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul. from 2022 (actually from just two weeks ago).

Cameron.

    Show notes

Screenwriter of Ruby Bridges and new author Toni Ann Johnson kicks off sharing her stories of working as a hired scribe in Hollywood and the joyful pain of working with Ruby Bridges director Euzhan Palcy before diving headfirst into her (and our) review of 1975’s Aaron Loves Angela (00:13), featuring the photogenic and uneven stewardship of Gordon Parks Jr. and actors Moses Gunn, Irene Cara and father/son Robert and Kevin Hooks.

    Car Wash (1975) Aug 03, 2022
    Show notes

The Men of Micheaux answer listener mail that gets them thinking MOVIE SOUNDTRACKS THAT WORK; then they pay their respects for a quartet of luminaries we lost this week - NBA and civil rights legend BILL RUSSELL, voice actor PAT CARROLL, and actresses MARY ALICE and NICHELLE NICHOLS; Vincent takes the D'Urville Martin train to Dennis Haysbert and Rihanna; and (00:56) the Men review 1976's movie (is it a flick or is it a vibe?) CAR WASH.

Remembering NICHELLE NICHOLS Jul 31, 2022
    Show notes

We remember actress/activist Nichelle Nichols (1932-2022) by revisiting their review of 1974's Truck Turner, which featured a Nichols' performance unlike any she ever gave before or after, as well as a bonus treat -- Len's 2015 interview with Ms. Nichols from the Great Philadelphia Comic Convention, where she shares anecdotes from her dance and acting career and her private thoughts on her recently departed Star Trek co-star Leonard Nimoy.

We mention the great documentary highlighting Nichols' relationship with NASA in the 70s and 80s -- Women In Motion (2019), available online.

    Change Of Mind (1969) Jul 27, 2022
    Show notes

Vincent and Len let the listener mail (and voicemail!) lead them in a chat about the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer, the wave of new projects announced at Comic-Con - special attention to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Then the Men of Micheaux share their spoiler-free thoughts on Jordan Peele's Nope. Plus the Top 5 Race Swap in Movies is surprising, Six Degrees of D'urville Martin is rejected this week by Vincent in protest and (1:04) 1969's Change of Mind is more than meets the tagline.

    Chameleon Street (1989) Jul 20, 2022
    Show notes

Len shares a touching story about cartoonist Robb Armstrong (Jump Start) and his connection with Peanuts and gives his TOP 5 Dumb Superhero Movies, in honor of Thor: Love and Thunder. Vincent loves Tyra Ferrell but 30-40s star Claude Rains doesn't easily compute in his D'Urville-centric mind. And CHAMELEON STREET is the indy film that could, though there's an argument over whether or not it did.
