#4 Today I Learned: Perfect Patient Imperfect Doc; My Fake MRSA; Crowdsourced Dx Jul 22, 2019
    Show notes

Some of our stories have been a bit more heart, some of ours have been a bit more soul – and in this episode we’re a bit more brain, with our theme “Today I Learned”. If you think back to your medical school admissions essay… we probably all talked “helping people” and “life long learning,” and that was before you even practiced medicine and knew what you were getting yourself into! Today we have three physicians, from still-in-training to seasoned and “been around the block” physicians, who all share their stories of “still learning. Stick around to the end, I think many of you will recognize our last featured physician! Chapter One, Perfect Patient Imperfect Doc (02:55): Jesse finds a perfect patient and then learns he’s not a perfect doctor. Story told by Jesse Handler, MD PhD, a resident in the department of medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Chapter Two, My Fake MRSA (08:57): Look, up on my leg! It’s a rash! It’s MRSA! It’s … not MRSA at all. Jonathan learns the pitfalls of self diagnosis. Story told by Jonathan Rich, DO, a primary care physician in Baltimore. Chapter Three, Crowdsourced Dx (15:50): What do you do when you find out your patient is crowdsourcing his diagnosis via social media? Kevin learns that going viral can be good medicine. Story told by Kevin Pho, MD, an internal medicine physician in New Hampshire, founder and editor of KevinMD. Episode produced by Molly Walker Hosted by Amy Ho, MD Sound engineering by Greg Laub Music by Jason Asistores, MD aka flatfives. Theme music by Palomar

#3 Grit: Hillbilly Girl; Ugly Cry; I Will Fly Jul 18, 2019
    Show notes

Grit is a lot of things. Grit is the nastiness you discover in the corner of the room, when you move out of your med school apartment after 4 years of lots of studying and no deep cleaning… Grit is what you and your trauma patient are covered in when a crazy country circus clown decides it’s a good idea to ride a horse, drunk, and shoot off home-made fireworks on July 4th. Grit is what you do to your jaw when it’s…just one of those days…you all know the ones. And grit is what you develop, what you train, what you grow, what you hone – as you get deeper and deeper on this crazy path we call Medicine. And of course, grit is our theme for this episode. So, let’s jump right into this episode: Chapter One, Hillbilly Girl: Growing up in the boondocks, Carrie broke up gang knife fights and always felt like an outsider, but that’s exactly what translated into her work as an academic nurse today. Story told by Carrie Sun, PhD, RN, ANP-BC, associate research scientist at Columbia School of Nursing. Chapter Two, Ugly Cry: After she landed her dream gig, Starla found herself in a puddle of tears after work one day and began walking towards a new calling. Story told by Starla Fitch, MD, an ophthalmologist, speaker, and personal coach. Chapter Three, I Will Fly: Diana learned from a young age to dream big, make a plan, and make it happen — even when her own dad said she couldn’t. Story told by Diana Bitner, MD, director of Women’s Health Network at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Episode produced by Elizabeth Hlavinka Hosted by Amy Ho, MD Sound engineering by Greg Laub Music by Jason Asistores, MD, Theme music by Palomar

#2 Fight or Flight: Naked Prisoner Brawl; Trauma All Around; Double Drowning Vacation Jul 15, 2019
    Show notes

Anamnesis comes from a Greek word meaning “remembrance”, and also has come to mean “the remembering of things from a supposed previous existence.” And that’s what we do here – we feature the recounting of amazing tales, heart wrenching accounts and poignant stories from physicians who do it every day. Now, we bring you a different theme to explore: Fight or Flight. I don’t know a single doc who doesn’t still enjoy – at least a little – the pitter patter of your heart that certain medical situations can get you in. It’s why we do it, our jobs are exciting, they’re impactful, they’re frequently unpredictable…because well, humans are unpredictable! I don’t want to mislead you. I love the sympathetic surge of epinephrine I get on shift. We love “fighting” in our own way whether it be through resuscitating a patient, throwing in crash chest tubes, or just the high of taking really excellent care of a patient. But the “flight” side of medicine shouldn’t be dismissed. Because for there to be life there must be death, for there to be good there must be evil. Sometimes we speed forward running on all cylinders – but other times, the right thing to do may be to step away, or even to say goodbye. We explore both of those sides in this episode: Chapter One, Naked Prisoner Brawl: Jeff gets to work and finds his prisoner patients naked, slathered in vaseline, and vomiting. Story told by Jeffrey E. Keller, MD, a physician practicing correctional medicine. Chapter Two, Trauma All Around: Five minutes before her shift ended as a resident, Rachel responds to a rapid response and finds a patient hanging from the shower. Story told by Rachel Bond, MD, a cardiologist. Chapter Three, Double Drowning Vacation: A tropical diving vacation turns into a sudden code for Andrew, who works to resuscitate two drowning divers who’s boat had capsized. Story told by Andrew Wilner, MD. Episode produced by Ashley Lyles Hosted by Amy Ho, MD Sound engineering by Greg Laub Music by Jason Asistores, MD aka flatfives. Theme music by Palomar

#1 First Time: Ziploc of Brains; Gut Punch; All Eyes Jul 15, 2019
    Show notes

The Anamnesis podcast is about exploring transformative moments in medicine – the ones that we hold for our lives in remembrance -- that change who we are as clinicians. So it is only appropriate, here on our first episode of Anamnesis, that we open with our Theme of “First Time”. The path to becoming a clinician is filled with firsts – there is no more obvious time for that than July, when medical students become interns, interns become residents, and residents become attendings. But when we say First Time, we’re not only talking about the obvious milestones – First Patient, First Procedure, First Death. Medicine is a journey of life long learning. Your “Firsts” don’t end with your formal training…they continue on no matter what phase of your career you are in. So, for our “First Time” here at Anamnesis, we lead in with a series of firsts from three brave physicians who have shared their stories with us today: Chapter One, A Ziploc Bag of Brains: Judy arrives at her first death scene only to find the dead body has disappeared. Story told by Judy Melinek, MD, a forensic pathologist. Chapter Two, Gut Punch: Edwin wrestles with the rollercoaster of his first time embroiled in a malpractice suit. Story told by Edwin Leap, MD, an emergency medicine physician. Chapter Three, All Eyes: Ajay steps up to the podium, performs a live case for the first time at a medical conference. Story told by Ajay Kirtane, MD], an interventional cardiologist. Episode produced by Nicole Lou] Hosted by Amy Ho, MD Sound engineering by Greg Laub Music by Jason Asistores, MD aka flatfives. Theme music by Palomar
