#8 I Quit: Dying for the Fifth Time; Why I Fled the Country; My Baby, My Nightmare Dec 20, 2019
    Show notes

"I Quit," means many things in medicine. Sometimes it means literally why we quit medicine -- because sometimes we do. It could mean why we quit something else to go into medicine -- because we have plenty of those as well. It could mean our patients saying "I quit" -- and us either supporting them in that or helping to show them the light. For me, I think I've personally cycled through all of those -- had moments where I wanted to quit, had moments where I did quit, and moments where I both helped patients quit or got them to not. And I’m sure you have too. No matter how you take it, "Quitting isn't for quitters, or losers," as the old saying goes. Quitting is sometimes the right decision and sometimes just a part of life. Chapter One. Dying for the Fifth Time: (2:10) David chases his own cure for a rare condition and ends up on a mission for many others. Story by David Fajgenbaum, MD. Chapter Two. Why I Fled the Country: (13:55) When a hospital acquisition forces Joseph into an untenable position, he ends up having to leave the country. Story by Joseph Wiedermann, MD. Chapter Three. My MD, My Baby, My Nightmare: (25:32) When Sapna, a new mother and fresh doctor, cuts herself and is exposed to HIV, she goes into emotional hiding. Story by Sapna Kudchadkar, MD. #7 Got Your Back: Patient Jekyll, Mr. Hyde; Over Her Dead Body; Paralysis to Pen Pal Nov 22, 2019
    Show notes

Friendship shows up in sometimes unexpected ways in medicine. There are moments when the nurse can't get an IV, and the doctor steps in with the ultrasound to help, when the tech starts to tire from doing chest compressions and a student steps behind him, ready to take over. These are the signs of a great team, and more importantly than anything, the friendly bonds we share. I highlight the "got your back" of a healthcare team, having the back of one of another for the good of the patient -- but in medicine, that feeling is not limited to your team. You can independently have the back of your patients, your patients can have your back too. We exist in a large interconnected web, and in one way or other we are all players on the team. Here are three stories, which capture moments of "Got Your Back" from three very different physicians: Chapter One. Patient Jekyll, Mr. Hyde (03:07): A med student's friendly bond with a young VA patient turns into a grain of salt dose for "fresh meat." Story by Rambling Resident. >Chapter Two. Over Her Dead Body (17:41): Tim finds friendship in anatomy lab with fellow students … and their cadaver, Melba. Story by Tim Hlavinka, MD. Chapter Three. From Paralysis to Pen Pal (25:34): High heeled swagger of an accomplished attending paralyzes Ronil, until an unexpected turn in the relationship. Story by Ronil Shah, MD. Ready to tell your story? #6 Rebirth: Child DNR Agony; Woman, MD > Doubt; My Best Failure Oct 29, 2019
    Show notes

We kick off our new season with "Rebirth." Rebirth is an interesting concept in medicine because, for patients, it means one thing. It can mean the patient who hits rock bottom and is finally ready to make a change in their lives. It can mean a new organ in a patient, a literal rebirth for both the donor and the receiver. From the physician side, though, it's a bit different. Some cases, patients, and moments really catapult us into a rebirth because it jars your understanding of yourself and medicine so profoundly. Sometimes it's as simple as advancing your training. Who you are as a medical student is different from who you are as a resident, which is different from who you are as an attending. We are all constantly morphing. Here are three stories, which capture moments of rebirth from three very different physicians: Chapter One. Woman, MD > Panic and Prejudice (03:05): Amy must prove to a patient’s loved one that she actually is an MD, in a moment that solidifies her own confidence as an emergency medicine physician. Story told by Amy Khong, MD. Chapter Two. Child DNR Agony (13:35): Treating a child at death's door, Anastassios is caught between parents who flip-flop on DNR instructions. Story told by pediatrician Anastassios Koumbourlis, MD. Chapter Three. My Best Failure Ever (22:30): Brant fails big time, but then through an unexpected babysitting gig, his perspective on medicine and his love life change forever. Story told by Brant Mittler, MD, JD. Ready to tell your story? Check out the Anamnesis tipsheet. Episode produced by Amanda D’Ambrosio Hosted by Amy Ho, MD Sound engineering by Greg Laub Theme music by Palomar

#5 Higher Power: Ghost Dad Summons; Seeking Forgiveness; All I Could Do Jul 24, 2019
    Show notes

We see things that make sense – like “oh you eat a supersize bag of flaming hot Cheetos, and now you have chest pain?” – that makes sense. But sometimes we see things with no explanation, that make no sense, that might make you believe life is unfair, or that give you new hope in the universe. Sometimes we see miracles, sometimes we see tragedies – all with no explanation -- and in those times we just have bewilderment and the stunned feeling of humility, that there are things out of our control. Here are three stories, which capture those moments that humble us and force us to look beyond ourselves: Chapter One, Ghost Dad Summons (03:00): Amy’s seemingly stable patient, a young boy, sees his dad telling him it’s time to go home, only the dad was already dead. Story told by Amy Ho, MD , an emergency physician. Chapter Two, Seeking Forgiveness (11:00): Tim wrestles with the guilt and agony of a nightmare patient outcome after a surgical complication. Story told by Timothy Hlavinka, MD, an urologist. Chapter Three, All I Could Do (21:05): A Chassidic family battles a hospital's plans for DNR on their loved one through a legal injuction on religious grounds, and Joel steps into the middle of the fray. Story told by Joel Zivot, MD, an anesthesiologist and critical care physician. Episode produced by Kristen Monaco Hosted by Amy Ho, MD Sound engineering by Greg Laub Music by Jason Asistores, MD aka flatfives. Theme music by Palomar
