    Manga Mavericks EP. 113: Yu-Gi-Oh! Mar 16, 2020
    Show notes

On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton and Lum are joined by freelance letterer, Brandon Bovia, as well as former Shonen Jump manga editor, Jason Thompson, to discuss Kazuki Takahashi's smash hit manga, Yu-Gi-Oh! A series that went from being about the journey of a young, boy who became possessed by an evil spirit after solving an ancient puzzle, to becoming one of the biggest trading card games of all time! On this podcast, we discuss our memories of the franchise and what it means to us, especially after reading the original source material, as well as many other topics, such as the broader themes of the series and how well they're explored, or if the series would be the same or be able to achieve the same kind of international popularity without the existence of Duel Monsters, but most important of all: Can a Duel Disk eat a Devil Fruit? All these questions and more are explored throughout this podcast, so grab your deck and get your game on! PODCAST BREAKDOWN: 0:00:00 - Intro 0:05:26 - Yu-Gi-Oh! Manga Mavericks @ Movies: Captain Marvel (Patreon Peek) Mar 12, 2020
    Show notes

Hello listeners! It’s time to fly higher, further, faster with another Pateron Peek of one of our Patreon Bonus Podcasts! The results of our latest survey showed that many of our listeners REALLY liked our Spider-Verse episode of @ Movies with Vix where we really dived deep into the history of the characters that appeared in the film. We recorded several other @ Movies podcasts like that that we released as Patreon-exclusive episodes, and I thought that now that some time has passed we could share them on our public feed as well. Today we’re commemorating a year since Captain Marvel’s theatrical release by sharing part of our review of the movie, previously released exclusively on our Patreon! Vix joins us to give a detailed rundown of the history of Carol Danvers, tracking her journey from her less than feminist origins to her current iconic status! Vix notoriously used to hate Captain Marvel, but has her opinion changed now that she’s read her entire canonical comics history? Does the film’s presentation of Carol and her origins ring true to the heart of her character? We discuss why Carol Danvers is definitely not “just a girl” by going over her comics and the movie in depth! If you like what you hear, you can listen to our full podcast at patreon.com/mangamavericks, where we have almost a dozen other bonus podcasts waiting for you at our $5 tier, including other @ Movies reviews of Alita: Battle Angel and Dragon Ball Super: Broly! Our recent project is another Manga Mavericks Book Club read-through series. Colton and Doctor will be going through Masami Kurumada’s classic shonen epic Saint Seiya two volumes at a time! You can check out a free preview of the entire first episode on our feed now, and pledge to our Patreon to hear the rest as they come out! Podcast Breakdown: 00:30 - Intro and Updates 04:18 - Captain Marvel Discussion 1:08:43 - Wrap-Up Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @manga_mavericks, on tumblr at mangamavericks.tumblr.com, and subscribe to us on Youtube. Don’t forget to also like and subscribe to us on Youtube and iTunes and leave us reviews to help us curate the show and create better content! If there are any topics, series or mangaka you would like to see us talk about on the show, drop us a line in the comments below, or e-mail us at mangamavericks@gmail.com! Thanks for listening! Manga Mavericks Book Club: Saint Seiya, Vols. 1 and 2 (Preview) Mar 07, 2020
    Show notes

Welcome to a special preview of a podcast series available exclusively on our Patreon entitled, the Manga Mavericks Book Club! A spin off series where we select different manga series previously covered on the main Manga Mavericks podcast and discuss them even further from volume to volume! Previously, we covered the entirety of the first arc of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure with Grant (@grantthethief) from the Blade Licking Thieves podcast, but for now we'll be taking a break from JoJo in order to read through all 28 volumes of Masami Kurumada's Saint Seiya! A mythical, action battle series that Lum has already covered on the show previously that Colton unfortunately had to miss out on, but will now be going through all of it with his other compatriot in podcasting, Doctor, from the SSAA Network! For both Colton and Doctor, its their first time really digging into Saint Seiya and its many melodramatic, but thrilling, adrenaline pumping battles, as they discuss many of the series' different facets, such as its use of now classic battle manga tropes, as well as some criticisms of Viz Media's release. This podcast is a free preview of the very first episode of this particular readthrough, with the rest of series available in the coming months *exclusively* on our Patreon! Next episode will be available on Tuesday, March 31st! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @manga_mavericks, on tumblr at mangamavericks.tumblr.com, and on Youtube! You can also follow the hosts on Twitter at @sniperking323 and @lumranmayasha. Manga Mavericks EP. 110: Doujinshi for Everybody (On Takahashi) Feb 09, 2020
    Show notes

On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton and Lum are joined by quite possibly their biggest guest yet! As they have the chance to sit down and chat with longtime translator of manga and video games, as well as the CEO of Irodori Comics himself, On Takahashi! Originally this interview was supposed to be an opportunity to discuss titles from the company's newest line of all ages doujinshi known as Irodori Aqua, but unfortunately, On spent most of our time talking about other amazing things, such as his unlikely journey in becoming a professional translator, as well as a breakdown on how much most manga artists typically make off of their work, and for that, we humbly apologize (lol)!! But seriously, we can't thank On enough for taking the time to come on our show and we hope have him on again in the future! Until then, please support Irodori Comics and their work, as well just your favorite artists in general in whatever way you can! Enjoy! Next time, we'll going over the results of our annual Manga Mavericks survey, as well as catching up on all the cool new manga that have started simulpubbing recently! Including the newest batch of Jump Starts, Kodansha's Ashidaka, and the newest Death Note one-shot! So be sure to look forward to it!! Manga Mavericks EP. 108: Anime NYC 2019, Part 2: Con Report Jan 22, 2020
    Show notes

We’re starting off this decade of the podcast by discussing a bunch of stuff we did last year! That’s right, it’s time to extensively cover all our adventures at the third convention we attended in 2019, Anime NYC! You’ve heard us go over all the news out of the con a few episodes ago, but this time around we’ll be going into what we personally did there - all the panels and events we attended, and all the people we met! It was a big con for us in many ways, and we got to hang out with a bunch of our friends that you’ll be hearing on this podcast, including Sakaki from the Weekly Shogakukan Edition twitter and blog, Jecka from the same blog, and Marion from Good Friends Anime Club, the Haikyuu podcast View from the Top, and an upcoming Dorohedoro podcast I’m excited to listen to! As you might have guessed, having five people on to discuss what they did at an incredibly busy event takes a while, which is how we’ve ended up with the 4+ hour long podcast you’re about to listen to. Believe it or not, this is but the first of a series of long podcasts we’re starting off 2020 with, as the Best of Manga 2019 episode we recorded also ended up being nearly five hours long, and we have several other incoming podcasts that have ran long besides. Suffice to say, one of our New Year’s Resolutions for Manga Mavericks this year is recording shorter podcasts, both for your listening convenience and our time and sanity! But let me ask you, are you a person who prefers long podcasts like this, or wants them shorter? Do you enjoy these convention report episodes, or are there types of episodes you’d like us to do more of instead? You can let us know all this and more by taking our annual Manga Mavericks podcast survey, which is currently live through February 1st! SURVEY LINK: https://s.surveyplanet.com/UpCz9Mfs This year we wanted to give our survey-takers a little treat as thanks for their feedback, so we’re running a giveaway contest that all survey-takers are automatically entered in. Just fill out our survey, and you could win a FREE volume of manga that we have on hand to give out! Besides the survey, if you want to support the show and help us keep doing what we’re doing, throw us some love over at the Manga Mavericks patreon. Supporting us on Patreon also gives you guys special rewards too! For example, you may have heard the interviews we recorded with Pokemon voice actresses Sarah Natochenny and Lisa Ortiz as well as Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino on our previous episode, where we included an abridged version of the interviews that included just the questions we asked. We’ll be uploading the full, unabridged interviews exclusively to our Patreon, so if you want to hear more questions and conversations with Sarah, Lisa, and Tomino pledge to us for just $5 or more for complete access to those as well as ten of our monthly bonus pods EXCLUSIVELY available on our Patreon! We also have full transcripts of our interviews with Sarah and Lisa written up on All-Comic.com for you to check out as well! PATREON LINK: https://www.patreon.com/mangamavericks There’s more to say, but I’ll let you listen to the rest in the podcast proper! And trust me, we have A LOT to talk about... Manga Mavericks EP. 107: Golden Kamuy Dec 28, 2019
    Show notes

On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Lum and Colton are joined by cosplayer extraordinaire Diana Soreil, as well as Kelly Quinn Chiu from the One Panel Later podcast, to discuss Satoru Noda's Golden Kamuy! Just in time for winter, Golden Kamuy is a tale about hunting for treasure while surviving the bitter freezing wilderness, as well as constant attacks from all kinds of weirdos, criminals or both. We discuss everything we love about Noda's master work, including how it manages to be thrilling, hilarious and educational all at the same time! Before that though, we also cover some news, as well as discuss our thoughts on first couple chapters of two of Shonen Jump's newest series: Zipman and Agravity Boys!
