Manga Mavericks EP. 117: "Urusei Yatsura" Apr 26, 2020
    Show notes

It’s time to put weird together, and make it even weirder! It’s not just my imagination filling me with anticipation, because we’re talking about none other than Rumiko Takahashi’s planet-rocking hit manga Urusei Yatsura! And we have plenty of cause to celebrate, because we have passed the first year anniversary of the manga’s republication by Viz Media! This is an exciting time to be a Urusei Yatsura fan, and no better time to officially cover it on the show! Long-time listeners may remember that I previously recorded a spin-off podcast called #LumSquad last year where me and my friend AC discussed the first volume of Viz’s new omnibus edition and explored some of the series’ history there. But we always intended to cover Urusei Yatsura on Manga Mavericks as well, and we’ve got a great balance of first-time readers and long-time fans on today to talk about it; our good friend and frequent guest Vix, and first-time guest Dawn from the Anime Nostalgia Podcast! Together we discuss how we got into the series, mine and Dawn’s thoughts revisiting the early parts of the series, and Vix and Colton’s impressions as first-time readers. We also explore the differences between Viz’s original 90’s releases of the manga and the new editions, and Dawn shares anecdotes about AnimEigo’s release of the anime and being a UY fan in the early 90s! Plus, we rant about a certain inexplicable name change, gush over the possibilities of a modern UY anime, and share our favorite chapters from these early volumes! All in all, we spend over two hours celebrating the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi’s magnum opus! But wait, there’s more! If you’re looking for more thoughts on the Urusei Yatsura anime, check out the second episode of #LumSquad! AC and I explore the anime’s production history, how the show changes over its run, the incredible production staff and vocal talent on the show, and tons more! Just like this show, we spend over two and a half hours discussing the series, and we’ve barely even scratched the surface of what we wanted to talk about! Urusei Yatsura is a treasure trove offering a wealth of topics to explore, and I’m really excited to talk more about the series and everything I love about it in future episodes of #LumSquad! PODCAST BREAKDOWN: 00:22 - Intro & Updates on #LumSquad and Manga Mavericks @ Movies 06:10 - Urusei Yatsura Discussion! 06:32 - Introducing our Guests & Show Plan 09:39 - Dawn’s History with Urusei Yatsura & Rumiko Takahashi 16:46 - Tape-Trading, Fansubs, and Anime on VHS and TV Back in the 90’s 20:43 - LumRanmaYasha’s History with Urusei Yatsura 22:34 - The History of Urusei Yatsura’s North American Publication 26:30 - The Struggles of Buying Comics in the 90’s 31:30 - How Manga Pricing Has Changed Over the Years 35:35 - Thoughts on the New UY Editions & the Missing “My Lum” Tributes 38:00 - Vix’s Experiences with Rumiko Takahashi & Urusei Yatsura 41:40 - Maison Ikkoku’s Troubled Release History in North America 42:34 - Thoughts on the Casting Changes in the Maison Ikkoku & Ranma ½ Dubs 45:29 - “Being a Fan of Anime Before Americans Realized Japan Existed Sounds Like Suffering” 47:52 - Awareness of Urusei Yatsura in North America vs. Japan 49:34 - The Growing Mainstream Visibility of Anime in North America 51:11 - Colton’s History with Rumiko Takahashi & First-Time Experience Reading Urusei Yatsura 57:21 - What Makes Lum an Iconic Character 1:07:54 - How Urusei Yatsura Changes Over Time 1:11:49 - Our Favorite Chapters & Moments From The Early Volumes 1:21:31 - Japanese Folklore Influences in Urusei Yatsura 1:23:35 - Thoughts on the Translation & Cultural Challenges in Adaptation 1:31:39 - The “Hot Springs Emblem” Rant & The Character Profiles 1:44:31 - It’s a Good Time to Be a Rumiko Takahshi Fan 1:47:38 - Cameos in Urusei Yatsura 1:50:09 - One-off Characters in Urusei Yatsura 1:51:16 - Ten and Takahashi’s Cute Child & Animal Mascot Charac

Manga Mavericks EP. 116: My Boss is Goofy, the Disney Character Apr 22, 2020
    Show notes

To say times are rough would be an understatement. The pandemic has infected the anime and manga industry, affecting the production and release of several anime and manga titles. It has even taken down several once-though indomitable cons this year, including SDCC and Anime Expo. So, naturally, we’ve got to talk about all the stuff that’s either been delayed or outright canceled. Which is a real downer, man. Yet, even this pandemic can’t slow down the fast-paced world of manga, so we’ve got tons of serialization and licensing news to talk about as well. Plus, we’ve got some lighter fare including the likes of a list of manga people want to see animated, which includes a surprisingly goofy choice that I’m disappointed isn’t even Goofy-er! We’ve even thrown in a mini-review of the newest Jump series Moriking in the middle of this discussion too! So even though we’ve got some bummer news to talk about, hopefully, you’ll find this episode a humorous and hopeful romp through the latest goings-on in the always lively manga industry! #Lum Squad #02: "Lum: The Animated Series!" Apr 16, 2020
    Show notes

Hello darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura! That’s right, we’re not a one-and-done nor were we meant to be an annual show… even though it has in fact been a year since our last episode. I apologize for that unexpected year-long hiatus, which is entirely my fault. ^^, From here on out I’m hoping to resume production on #LumSquad with AC on our originally proposed monthly schedule. It’s definitely a shame to have such a large gap between the release of the first episode and the second, but hey, it took the Urusei Yatsura manga a year and a half of irregular serialization until it became a proper long-running series, so you can think of our first episode as a pilot and this second episode onward as the real beginning of our regular podcast! Since we covered the manga on our first episode, for our second installment we’re diving deep into the anime! We explore the anime’s production history, how the show changes over its run, the incredible production staff and vocal talent on the show, and tons more! Plus, we rant about Mamoru Oshii’s influence and question common assertions made about the show’s quality, while sharing some thoughts on the show’s eclectic musical score. To top it off, we answer a ton of fan questions, and talk about our favorite episodes of the show! All in all, we spend two and a half hours discussing the anime, and we’ve barely even scratched the surface of stuff we plan to cover in future episodes! Thank you guys so much for being patient with this and looking forward to more #LumSquad! We received a lot of enthusiasm for the first episode and a lot of people asking about when the second would come out over the past months, and I hope you’ll enjoy this episode enough to forgive the wait! And hey, if you don’t want to wait another month for our third episode, check out our recent Manga Mavericks episode on the Urusei Yatsura manga with special guest Dawn from the Anime Nostalgia Podcast, which was a ton of fun and also very informative about the early days of the UY fandom in North America back in the 90s! Manga Mavericks EP. 115: "I Have a Problem..." Mar 30, 2020
    Show notes

I have a problem with the way we talk about problematic media. Or, more accurately, the way we don’t talk about problematic media. We’ve had a lot of conversations recently about problematic content in series we like and don’t like, and it’s a topic we’ve seen debated time and again whenever a series or creator does something questionable, uncomfortable, or in some cases, criminal. While it’s difficult to reconcile enjoying something that may be doing something “bad” or was created by a creator who has done something “bad,” I think it’s important to interrogate problematic content in the media we consume to identify the ways in which it may affect real people in harmful or damaging ways, and whether supporting such works emboldens the cultural pervasiveness of this content and their creators. This is a complicated topic that can be approached from many perspectives, so we invited several people who have expertise in holding conversations about problematic media and discussing the ways in which it reflects upon our culture and affects people. We’re delighted to have back on the show Erica Friedman, the premier yuri scholar, historian, and founder of Yuricon and Okazu, and are excited to invite on some new guests - Ash from the Youtube Channel The King’s Speech, and The Black Manga Critic from the Youtube Channel of the same name. Together we explored our thoughts on problematic content in media, and how to hold helpful and productive discussions of them in ways that encourage cultural change. Huh, who would have thought you could have a civil conversation about problematic media on the internet? As the title indicates, we record a whole bunch of news that we had been meaning to get to, with even more news that came up afterwards that we decided to include with the episode, which is why this episode is a few days late, but despite the shape the world is in with the current COVID-19 pandemic, the manga/anime industry hasn't completely stopped yet! We have everything from new series, to even more new licenses, as well as our thoughts on the recent announcement of the upcoming interview with Nobuhiro Watsuki and Eiichiro Oda, plus the return of Tite Kubo and the unfortunate exit of Masashi Kishimoto. All that and more on this week's podcast! Remember to stay inside if you can and wash your hands!!
