Manga Mavericks EP. 96: Anime Expo 2019 #2: The AX Experience Aug 30, 2019
    Show notes

You’ve been waiting all summer for it, and now the time has come! That’s right, on this behemoth of an episode we’re giving you guys a full rundown of this year’s Anime Expo - an over four hour-long podcast to discuss over four days of events and activities! Joining me to go over all this goodness is VLordGTZ, co-host of Manga Mavericks @ Movies and editorial writer for All-Comic and Toonami Faithful, and the Shonen Sunday guru himself, Sakaki, webmaster of the Weekly Shonen Sunday talkback blog and twitter. At least, you’ll get to hear Sakaki about half an hour in - there was, unfortunately, a mishap where his audio wasn’t recording for the first hour of our conversation, so we had to trim down some of our earlier discussion points. If he hadn’t lost that first hour, you guys would be listening to a five hour-long podcast instead of a four hour-long one! But don’t you fret - you guys will start hearing Sakaki once we get to the really exciting stuff, from the Dr. Stone premiere onwards! Yes indeed, we cover the gamut of AX premieres and panels in this podcast, from the historic Japanese-language premiere of Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution to Ouran High School Host Club author Bisco Hatori’s first North American con appearance! Plus, we also give you the lowdown on the lines, the food, the convention center, the dealer’s hall and Artist Alley - almost everything and anything there is to know about what our Anime Expo 2019 experience was like! It was a lot of chaos, but did we have fun overall, and would we recommend you attending next year’s show? Listen and learn, as we explore the AX experience! Show notes

On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton has a lot of news and manga to cover, but with the help of his conveniently newfound podcast hosting powers, he won't have to go at it alone! First he enlists the help of Shonen Sunday enthusiast, Bomber D. Rufi (@kiirobon), in order to not just tackle whatever news they could at the time, but also cover all of the new one shots now available on the Shonen Jump app and website from well known artists such as Boichi, Yusuke Murata and Yusei Matsui! Join our heroes as they tackle such exciting news stories including the overwhelmingly huge wave of new Boys Love manga that have arrived on the market through futekiya and other publishers, SOZO Comics licensing new series from their humble beginnings to be read on Comixology, as well as the most taxing challenge in all of manga fandom: Kodansha USA licensing new shojo manga when one of them is actually from a shonen magazine!!! (Disclaimer: Labels don't actually matter, but this is also the internet we're talking about) After Colton and Bomber exhaust themselves with the news, Colton summons his faithful friends, co-host LumRanmaYasha and Maxy Barnard from Friendship Effort Victory, to tackle not just the latest Black Clover and We Never Learn popularity polls, but what also might be some of the most controversial new series to come out of Manga Plus: Hina Change and Dear Sa-chan! Both of the these new simulpubs are...challenging to say the least! Both of which tackling controversial subject matter that may be too much for some people, but not the Mavericks! Find out how they feel about these and all the rest of the new manga that have come out in the past month, on this, the latest episode of the podcast! Enjoy!! Manga Mavericks EP. 94: Anime Expo 2019 Part 1: News and Day 0 Aug 02, 2019
    Show notes

On Thursday, July 18th, a devastating fire burned down Kyoto Animation’s 1st Studio Building, claiming the lives of 35 people and hospitalizing 33 more. The human costs of this tragedy are unfathomable and the damage done to the studio is immeasurable. We stand together with KyoAni in their time of need, and want to do our part in spreading the word to fans on how to help the studio and its staff. For our Community Shout-Outs this week, we’ve compiled a list of resources that you can use to donate to the studio and reflections from the fandom that celebrate the legacy of KyoAni, its staff, and their stories. Please take the time to read each of these pieces and, if possible, take part in the efforts to send love KyoAni’s way. Anime Expo was so packed with news and events that it’s taken us a month and two podcasts to cover it all! In this first installment of our AX coverage, we spend over two hours simply discussing all the exciting announcements made at Anime Expo, from long-awaited licensing announcements to new projects by legendary artists like Katsuhiro Otomo and Yoshitaka Amano! Then, we take a trip back in time to share a podcast we recorded pre-AX, discussing our impressions of the then-upcoming convention and what we did on Day 0. This includes VLord’s thoughts on the LA premiere of Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer and a couple of other panels live-streamed from Petree Hall! If you think this podcast is lengthy, well, just wait until the next episode, where we’ll discuss our entire AX experience in an episode that’s over four hours long! Until then, get a taste of how exhausting AX is by listening to this extensive episode!
