In this episode, I interview Sabrina Strings, PhD and author of the incredibly important book Fearing The Black Body, The Racial Origins of Fat Phobia. Through her research, she seeks to answer the question of " Why do we all, but especially white women, so badly want to be thin?" If you have ever wondered why, this episode is for you. What she discovered and shares about in this episode will blow your mind. #83 How the Process of Manifestation Can Help You Heal & Recover (Cara goes woo) Mar 11, 2020
    Show notes

OK!! Today I am getting woo on you. Although, in the episode, I argue that the process of Manifestation and the Law of Attraction aren't actually all that woo-woo, but rather really practical and make a lot of sense in a variety of contexts.

I share with you how I have been using the process of manifestation in my coaching without realizing it or intentionally going through it while I help people heal their relationship with food and their body. I share some examples of how you can apply it to recovery as well as how it can be used negatively and lead to a disordered relationship with food.

I bust a common myth about these New Age philosophies and show you how you can apply them to your own life to create massive change.

Lastly, I share some examples from my career to inspire those of you that are high-achieving! My goal is for you to leave feeling excited and with practical steps you can take to manifest whatever you want- recovery and a normal relationship with food included!

#82 Negative Body Image, Sexual Objectification, and How Beauty is Used Against Women with Dr. Caroline Heldman Mar 04, 2020
    Show notes

In this episode, I interview Dr. Caroline Heldman. She is Executive Director of The Representation Project, a Professor at Occidental College in Los Angeles, and the Senior Research Advisor for the Geena Davis Institute for Gender in Media. Her research specializes in media, the presidency, and systems of power (race, gender, ability, and sexuality). Dr. Heldman has published five books.

We talk about sexual objectification and how it is not actually powerful to be seen as a sex object highly desired by men AKA the male gaze. We explore why most Body Positive advertisements don't actually work or make a difference, and what do women do about the pressure to be thin and beautiful. Then we cover sexuality, being sexy and how to reclaim our sexuality after trauma, including eating disorders or sexual violence.

Be prepared to have a lot to ponder and digest after this jammed packed episode.

#81 Why I Want You To Get Angry!!! Feb 26, 2020
    Show notes

In this solo cast, I talk about how anger is a transformative emotion. Much of the body positive movement would have you believe that self-love, acceptance, and confidence are the emotions you need to heal from food and body shame but I'd argue that you have to get angry first. In this episode, I share the things that made me angry and why that's a good thing for your healing journey. Anger is actionable. Shame is powerless.

#79 Obesity is NOT An Epidemic: How Fatness Came To Be Understood as a Public Health Crisis with Abigail Saguy, PhD., UCLA Professor Feb 12, 2020
    Show notes

Get ready to have your mind blown with this episode!

I interview renowned author and sociologist, Abigal Saguy, PhD. and professor at UCLA. She wrote the book "What's Wrong with Fat?" a book that explains how we came to view fatness as a public health crisis and explores the implications of this view. Through her research she found that public discussions of the "obesity crisis" do more harm than good, leading to bullying, weight-based discrimination, and misdiagnoses. In this episode, she explains the cultural, political & capitalistic reasons why fatness is now seen as pathological when it used to be seen as a sign of good health. If you have ever wondered how our society became so obsessed with weight- this episode is for you!
