Is this year's team too similar to Gonzaga's 20-21 roster? Will Mark Few learn from his mistakes? Jun 13, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs' roster is shaping up to look very similar to the 20-21 squad, which led by Jalen Suggs, Corey Kispert, and Drew Timme, played in the NCAA Championship before losing to the Baylor Bears. Will Mark Few learn from his mistakes, or is this team destined to suffer a similar fate due to a similar collection of flaws, namely rim protection and issues against physical guards?

Today is mailbag Monday, and discussing Gonzaga's lineup concerns is just one of many topics covered, including:

Ben Gregg's path to playing time
Can this roster handle physicality?
Comparing this year's team to 20-21
Which Zag in the NBA will win a championship next?
Examining some buddy cop relationships among Gonzaga teammates
Which Zags would make the best coaches?

And more!

Show notes

Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs put together a roster built to compete for a national championship, and now they are working on building a schedule that will challenge them enough early in the season to prepare them for the rigors of the NCAA Tournament.

Baylor, Alabama, Texas, Washington, and the PK85 make up the tough part of the Zags non-conference slate, and in today's episode we break down each of those games as we look ahead to the upcoming season.

The rest of the episode is a discussion about Josh Perkins participating in the TBT with a team called Friday Beers, Will Graves making it official he will play at Southern Oregon next season, and Gonzaga's reference in the Adam Sandler movie Hustle by Kenny Smith.

Finally, we also discuss the future for Gonzaga's baseball program after two freshmen were named Collegiate Baseball Freshmen All-Americans.

Evaluating what Drew Timme's return means for the 2022-2023 Gonzaga Bulldogs Jun 09, 2022

Show notes

Now that the dust has settled, Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs are looking at one of the deepest, most talent-rich teams that has ever laced them up in Spokane, Washington. How this coaching staff divides minutes will be a key talking point all offseason, and came up quite a bit in today's episode when grading listener-submitted hot takes.

Drew Timme's return sparked a lot of discussion about whether having him back helps or hurts Gonzaga's chances of winning a title next year, and many other topics were discussed including:

Will Rasir Bolton start or come off the bench?
Could Julian Strawther lead this team in scoring?
What will Dominick Harris' role look like?
How many Zags will be first round picks in 2023?
Is Hunter Sallis in line to be Gonzaga's most improved player?

Gonzaga Bulldogs guard Rasir Bolton returns to Spokane for one more year Jun 01, 2022

Show notes

Gonzaga Bulldogs guard Rasir Bolton made it official that he is returning to Spokane to join Mark Few's team for one more season in 2022-2023. While we await the decisions from Drew Timme and Julian Strawther, we look at Bolton's impact last year and what we can expect from him again next season, as a seasoned guard who shot over 45% from three last year. We also hear from Bolton in a five-minute interview conducted by KREM's Brenna Greene, where he touches on why he wanted to return and why he feels this team has unfinished business.

The final segment is a brief preview of the big non-conference game between Gonzaga and the Baylor Bears, now scheduled for December 2 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. We discuss why Gonzaga doesn't play many home and true road games, and the Caleb Lohner factor for this upcoming battle.
