The NET rankings are wrong: Gonzaga should be the top seed in the WCC Tournament over Saint Mary's Feb 27, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs will be the two seed in the WCC Tournament after the NET rankings favored Saint Mary's - despite GU having more Q1 and Q2 wins, less losses, and overall a better resume.

Mailbag Monday features a litany of questions, including talk of Gonzaga's half court trap defense from Mark Few on Saturday, 94 feet with Jay Bilas, Ben Gregg's hair, my ideal Gonzaga broadcasting duo, the women's team and their chances of making a deep NCAA Tournament run, and more!

Gonzaga defeats Saint Mary's, shares WCC title | NET rankings got it wrong | Drew Timme: WCC POY? Feb 26, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs jumped out to a 19-point first half lead and defeated the Gaels of Saint Mary's at The Kennel in Spokane on Saturday evening, winning a share of the WCC championship behind a monster game from Drew Timme and an all-around excellent performance from Anton Watson.

The shared WCC title means the conference uses NET rankings to determine seeding, and despite less Quad 1 wins and more Q3/Q4 losses, the Gaels will get the number one seed. What does that mean for Gonzaga?

Finally, we close the show discussing Drew Timme's candidacy for conference Player of the Year, which is all but solidified now.

Gonzaga dominates San Diego | 5 keys to defeat Saint Mary's Gaels | Zags history on College GameDay Feb 24, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs took care of business against Steve Lavin's San Diego Toreros, scoring 97 points behind a monster double-double from Drew Timme and a career-best 18 points off the bench from Ben Gregg. The guard play was suspect, however, with the Zags only shooting 27% from beyond the arc against a zone. Could that be an issue in March?

Attention turns now to Saturday's game between the Zags and Saint Mary's Gaels, and we look at five keys for GU to secure a much-needed victory and a tie in the WCC standings. Can Julian Strawther put pressure on SMC's defense? Will Gonzaga get the ball out of Aidan Mahaney's hands? Is foul trouble an issue for Mitchell Saxen?

All that and more, as we also look back at Gonzaga's last five appearances on College GameDay, including two in Spokane.

Will the Gonzaga Bulldogs avoid looking ahead and falling to Steve Lavin and the San Diego Toreros? Feb 23, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs take on Steve Lavin and the San Diego Toreros for the first time on Thursday evening, a team that can really score with the best of them but defends the rim worse than almost anyone. What is the recipe for a win in this one, and can Mark Few's team avoid looking ahead to the Saturday's huge College GameDay bout with Randy Bennett and the Saint Mary's Gaels?

We also discuss Pryzemek Karnowski's impact on Gonzaga basketball history, whether he is underrated among current Zag fans, and deliberate on a hot take about whether this could be the year the Bulldogs win it all.

How Gonzaga matches up against projected one and two seeds | Andrew Nembhard's Rising Star showing Feb 22, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs were projected as a four-seed in the selection committee's first NCAA Tournament preview, and we take a look at which top teams present the best and worst matchups for Mark Few's team, including analysis on Alabama, Baylor, Houston, Kansas, and Tommy Lloyd's Arizona Wildcats.

Then, we discuss where Saint Mary's was seeded and how that would change depending on Saturday's result and a potential rematch in Las Vegas for the WCC Tournament.

We close out the show discussing Andrew Nembhard and Domantas Sabonis' appearances at the NBA All-Star Weekend festivities, while projecting who could (and who should) participate in next year's events.

Julian Strawther raises Gonzaga's ceiling | Ideal WCC Tournament opponents | College Gameday is here! Feb 21, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs were once again led by the two-headed monster of Drew Timme and Julian Strawther in a win over Lorenzo Romar's Pepperdine Waves on Saturday. Strawther's dominance over the last few weeks has many people asking about GU's ceiling with him playing this way, and on a delayed Mailbag Monday we break it all down.

Other topics discussed in today's episode include:

Should Dom Harris play over Nolan Hickman?
Is Anton Watson an All-WCC performer?
Which team is best to face in the WCC Tournament?
Why doesn't Pepperdine win more?
How exciting is College Gameday coming to Spokane?

Gonzaga Bulldogs make a statement in 43 point win over LMU | Julian Strawther's stock is on the rise Feb 17, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs scored 68 points in the first half to absolutely stomp LMU on the road, winning by 43 points behind 30 from Julian Strawther and a quiet but effective night from Drew Timme.

Mark Few's team had an outstanding gameplan and executed to perfection, pulling the Lions out of their rhythm and sending a statement to all of college basketball: this team is back and they can beat anyone in the country.

We discuss Strawther's elite performance and torrid stretch, and how it not only raises the ceiling for this team in March it also helps his NBA draft stock.

Finally, we close the show looking at GU's next opponent, the Pepperdine Waves, and what needs to happen for the team to get a win in Malibu.

Mark Few, Brett Yormark, and Drew Timme: 10 figures who will influence Gonzaga for the next 20 years Feb 16, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs rose from a flash in the pan program into a college basketball powerhouse over the last 20 years under coach Mark Few. The next 20 will almost certainly look a lot different, but Few remains the catalyst for what this program becomes in the next two decades.

Few isn't alone, however, as we look at the ten figures most likely to alter the Gonzaga landscape between now and 2043. The list includes Big-12 commissioner Brett Yormark, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey, the NCAA President, coach Lisa Fortier, and even Drew Timme - who's NIL impact will be felt for years to come.

Gonzaga's WCC title hopes depend on Zags stopping Cam Shelton | Who will win WCC player of the year? Feb 15, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs travel to LMU to take on the Lions - the only WCC team ever to beat the Zags, Saint Mary's, and BYU in the same season. For Mark Few's team to stay afloat in the WCC Championship race, they'll need to find a way to contain Cam Shelton who had 27 points the last time these two teams met.

The WCC season is nearing an end and it's time to make predictions for how the end of the season awards will shake out. Drew Timme is narrowly the pick for conference player of the year - but that's the only award going to a member of the Bulldogs.

We close the show looking at the ten man all-WCC team options, as well as five second team players, and the surprisingly few Zag players who are in contention for these awards in what has been a unique WCC season.

What's next for the Gonzaga Bulldogs and the Big-12 Conference? | Bracketology sends the Zags East Feb 14, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs remain in the thick of conference realignment discussions, although the Big-12 is currently focused on poaching the four corner schools from the Pac-12 in Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah. So what does that mean for Mark Few's team?

The latest bracketology from ESPN has the Zags as a four seed, but travelling all the way to Albany to take on Yale in the first round with a potential date against UConn awaiting them in the second round. Why such a bad draw for a team playing well right now?

We close the show looking at the Lady Zags, who are on the seven line after defeating Portland and likely securing first place in the WCC regular season.
