GREAT draw for Gonzaga Bulldogs | How Grand Canyon could pull off an upset | Lady Zags in Seattle Mar 13, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs landed a three seed in the west region of the 2023 NCAA Tournament, a favorable draw by the Selection Sunday committee pitting the Bulldogs against WAC opponent and potential future WCC member Grand Canyon.

Grand Canyon shoots over 38% from deep and is led by Ray Harrison, but they finished fifth in the WAC and shouldn't be too much trouble for Mark Few's team. A second round matchup looms with a six seeded TCU team missing star forward Eddie Lampkin, or if the play-in winner between Arizona State and Nevada beats TCU.

We take a look at the rest of the region as well, including a banged up UCLA team, a fading Kansas squad, Saint Mary's as the five seed, former No. 1 team UConn as the four seed, and even Boise State and Northwestern as an intriguing 7-10 matchup.

We close out the show looking at Lisa Fortier's program, who received a nine seed in Seattle facing No. 8 Ole Miss - with a potential date against Stanford looming in the second round.

Nolan Hickman key to deep March run for Gonzaga | What new WCC commissioner Stu Jackson means for Gonzaga Mar 10, 2023

Show notes

Drew Timme and Julian Strawther are the most important players for a deep March run by the Gonzaga Bulldogs, but the ceiling for Mark Few's team will come down to the performance of Nolan Hickman - who has redefined his game this season and is playing the best basketball of his career.

Stu Jackson is the new commissioner of the West Coast Conference, and as a SeattleU alumni we discuss if that will factor into the WCC's future plans - while also discussing Jackson's introductory press conference and how his appointment will impact Gonzaga, who doesn't seem like they are going anywhere anytime soon after more comments from Brett Yormark of the Big-12 indicated they are waiting to see what happens to the Pac-12 before making more moves.

Finally, we close out the show discussing Baylor's loss to Iowa State, Marquette's narrow win over Saint John's, and the loss of Jaylen Clark for UCLA and how all of it could impact the Bulldogs on Selection Sunday.

Gonzaga SHOULD pursue Fardaws Aimaq in transfer portal | Why Anton Watson will be a 2024 draft pick Mar 09, 2023

Show notes

Texas Tech big man Fardaws Aimaq is back in the NCAA transfer portal after being a high-priority target for Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs last offseason. With Drew Timme making it official, will Aimaq choose to come to Spokane this time? And after an injury-riddled and up-and-down season in Lubbock, should Gonzaga still make him a high priority?

Anton Watson has not committed to leaving after his fourth season in Spokane, so we discuss what him returning could look like and why he could easily play his way into the 2024 NBA draft conversation if he returns.

Finally, we close out the show discussing Gonzaga's 2023-24 frontcourt as a whole - what it would look like with Aimaq and Watson together, where Ben Gregg and Efton Reid would fit in, and what next year might hold for Kaden Perry, Braden Huff, and newcomer Alex Toohey.

Gonzaga Bulldogs dominate Saint Mary's Gaels to win WCC Championship | Why this team can win it all Mar 08, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs dominated the Saint Mary's Gaels in Las Vegas on Tuesday to win the WCC Tournament Championship. Drew Timme had 18 points and broke Gonzaga's all-time scoring record, set by Frank Burgess over 50 years ago, while Anton Watson had another outstanding performance and Nolan Hickman hit four threes.

The Gaels shot just 33% from the field in a disastrous game for Randy Bennett's team, and GU's improved defense showcased how this team could shock the world and make it to the National Championship game.

We also discuss what this win means for bracketology, whether it could help the Zags land on the two line, and which games fans should be paying attention to this week for seeding purposes.

Finally, we close out the show discussing Lisa Fortier and the women's team losing to Portland, and what it means for their seeding in March. A potential second round matchup with South Carolina is less than ideal, but might be "fair" considering this team's subpar NET ranking.

Gonzaga Bulldogs advance to WCC Championship with win over San Francisco, setting up SMC rematch Mar 07, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs defeated the Dons of San Francisco in the WCC semifinals at the Orleans Arena on Monday night, setting up a showdown against the Saint Mary's Gaels for the championship.

Anton Watson had 20 points and Ben Gregg hit four threes, as USF chose not to defend Gonzaga's big men around the perimeter - a decision that may have cost them the game and ended the legendary career of point guard Kahlil Shabazz.

Saint Mary's sent BYU out of the WCC without having ever won a conference title, although the Cougars kept things interesting in the second half by using a press to stop the Gaels. Will Gonzaga once again utilize that 1-2-2 zone press to stop Aidan Mahaney, Logan Johnson, and the Gaels?

That is one of a handful of keys to a GU victory, including getting Drew Timme involved early, letting Julian Strawther cook, and trying to get into Randy Bennett's bench.

There is a path to a two seed for the Gonzaga Bulldogs | How will Zags stop Kahlil Shabazz in Vegas? Mar 06, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs seem locked into a three seed in the NCAA Tournament when Selection Sunday rolls around, but the path to a two seed is absolutely there for Mark Few's team - especially if Tommy Lloyd and Arizona falter in the Pac-12 Tournament, or Scott Drew and the Baylor Bears in the Big-12.

First though, the Zags have to worry about taking care of San Francisco on Monday evening in Las Vegas. The Dons won a double-overtime thriller against Santa Clara behind Kahlil Shabazz's 38 points. Will he pull some magic again?

We discuss the history between Gonzaga and USCF in the WCC Tournament, and list five keys for a Gonzaga victory: including Rasir Bolton continuing his dominance against the Dons, Malachi Smith's hot few weeks, and ball pressure on the guards at San Francisco.

Why Lisa Fortier and Gonzaga's women's team will be dangerous in March | The WCC hires coaches wrong Mar 03, 2023

Show notes

Lisa Fortier and Gonzaga's women's team nearly went undefeated in WCC play and finished the regular season 27-3, yet they are getting projected as an eight seed in the NCAA Tournament?

We discuss why that is, whether this team will defeat Portland in the WCC Championship, how non-conference scheduling will be critical for this program going forward, and what it means to have Kayleigh and Kaylynne Troung, Brynna Maxwell, Eliza Hollingsworth, and Yvonne Ejim all back next season.

Finally, we close the show discussing the first round of the WCC tournament on the men's side, where Portland defeated San Diego and Pacific took care of Pepperdine. With Steve Lavin and Lorenzo Romar being the first teams to go - we look at why hiring older coaches from high major programs hasn't worked in the WCC and why hiring successful coaches from smaller major programs (like Mark Pope and Shantay Legans) seems to work much better.

Drew Timme and Rasir Bolton close out Gonzaga home careers with win | Anton Watson snubbed by WCC? Mar 02, 2023

Show notes

Drew Timme and Rasir Bolton played their final games in The Kennel in Spokane on Wednesday as Gonzaga defeated Chicago State to close out the regular season. We celebrate the seniors, including Anton Watson and Malachi Smith, and analyze the play of younger players in this rout.

Then, we discuss the WCC awards which included Timme winning co-player of the year with Brandin Podziemski and Anton Watson getting left off the WCC first and second team. Was that the right decision? Or was Watson snubbed?

Finally, we close the show discussing the future of Watson, Smith, and Julian Strawther: did they also play their final game in Spokane? Or will Mark Few and co convince any of them to stay for another year?

Will the Pac-12 try to recruit the Gonzaga Bulldogs, and if so, should the Zags say yes? Mar 01, 2023

Show notes

The Pac-12 is set to lose UCLA and USC in 2024, and while most conference realignment conversations involve football schools it makes sense for the conference of champions to at least kick the tires on adding Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs - especially considering the geographic proximity of Spokane.

But is the relatively small media market and lack of a football team - combined with the smaller school and different academic standards - enough for the PAC-12 to vote yes for the Zags? And, perhaps more importantly, is Gonzaga willing to jump into a Pac-12 losing two of their best basketball programs, when the Big-12 has made it clear they have interest in adding them as well?

Show notes

Drew Timme announced he is leaving the Gonzaga Bulldogs after this season, ending his college career after four incredible years. We discuss how Timme is the perfect embodiment of Gonzaga basketball, and of college life in general.

We discuss Timme's legacy, and what the frontcourt might look like in 2023-24 with him (and potentially Anton Watson) moving on. Will Ben Gregg step into a starting role? What about Efton Reid? Will we get to see Braden Huff or Kaden Perry?

Close the show discussing five things we hope to see from Mark Few and the Bulldogs against Chicago State on Wednesday.
