Should The Cleveland Browns Play The Young Guys With The Playoffs Out of Reach? Dec 13, 2022
    Show notes

Deshaun Watson looked better in his second game under center against the Cincinnati Bengals. But with a loss to Joe Burrow and the Bengals the Browns playoff hopes took a huge hit! We discuss whether or not the Cleveland Browns should play the young guys with the playoffs out of reach. Or should the Browns go with the veterans and give them a chance to end the 2022 season with a winning record of 9-8? We discuss the pros and cons of both options in this episode of the Locked on Browns Podcast!

The Cleveland Browns have been decimated by injuries at the linebacker position this season. After already losing three starters for the season in Anthony Walker Jr., Jacob Phillips, and Sione Takitaki, they could now be on the verge of losing a fourth. Injuring his foot in the loss to the Cincinnati Bengals this weekend, WILL linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and the Browns are waiting on test results to see just how bad the damage is. For a defensive unit in need of salvaging this off-season as it is, this is less than stellar news for one of their few consistent contributors in 2022.

Find Out The Best and Worst PFF Grades Following The Browns vs. Bengals Game Dec 12, 2022
    Show notes

Joe Burrow did enough offensively, and the Bengals' defense stepped up to end the Browns' recent domination of the Battle of Ohio. Burrow shook off a sloppy start to throw two touchdown passes and Cincinnati beat Cleveland 23-10 on Sunday, ending a five-game skid in the rivalry. “A team win, team ugly win, but we got it done," Burrow said. Cincinnati bottled up Browns running back Nick Chubb, picked off Deshaun Watson and stopped the Browns on three fourth-down plays. “The defense played unbelievable and that really ended up being the deciding factor in the game,” Burrow said. “And so that’s kind of showing the kind of team we’re becoming — we’re able to win in a lot of different ways. You’ve seen it over the last couple of weeks on the defensive end and the offensive end and the kicking game. We’re just a complete team right now.” The Bengals (9-4) have won five straight and nine of 11. They remained tied for the AFC North lead with Baltimore, which beat Pittsburgh 16-14. Burrow picked up his first win in five starts against the Browns (5-8), whose playoff hopes are now all but nonexistent.

Watson was sharper than in his debut with the team last week and threw his first touchdown pass in 707 days, a 13-yarder to David Njoku in the third quarter. But Watson also threw a fourth-quarter interception and couldn't hook up with Donovan Peoples-Jones on a late fourth-and-goal from the 6 that would have made it a one-score game. He turned the ball over downs again on the Browns' last drive when he threw incomplete to Amari Cooper. Watson finished 26 of 42 for 276 yards, and his touchdown pass was the only time the Browns found the end zone. “The game is going to continue to speed up,” Watson said. “Each week is going to get better. Today was another learning lesson. Just need to continue to improve. The progress is always taking one step forward. The biggest ultimate goal is to get the W.” Burrow was 9 for 21 for 110 yards in the first half, including a 15-yard TD to Ja'Marr Chase. In the third quarter, Burrow found Trenton Irwin for an easy 45-yard scoring pass when the Browns bit on a flea-flicker.

Burrow was largely reliant on Chase after his other top receivers, Tyler Boyd and Tee Higgins, left the game with injuries. Chase had 10 receptions for 119 yards in his second game back since missing a month with a hip fracture. The Bengals quarterback finished 18 for 33 for 239 yards and threw a fourth-quarter interception. Joe Mixon, who missed the last two games with a concussion, rushed for 96 yards, including a 40-yard breakaway on a drive that led to a Cincinnati field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter. “In that first quarter, I wasn’t playing very well, I was missing throws,” Burrow said. “I settled in there in the second half of the second quarter, and from there we really moved the ball really well. The run game was good to us. Ja'Marr was incredible like he always is.”

The Cincinnati Bengals took control of this game in the second quarter and beat the Cleveland Browns for the first time in six tries. Offensive spotlight: QB Deshaun Watson didn't look much better than he did last week, completing 26-of-42 attempts for 276 yards and a touchdown and throwing a backbreaking interception late in the game. He gained just 6.6 yards per attempt.

Defensive spotlight: Cincinnati’s defense did a number on the Browns' run game, with D.J. Reader looking back to his best. Browns RB Nick Chubb averaged just 2.4 yards per attempt, and without that foundation, the Browns offense was toothless.

Rookie spotlight: Wide receiver David Bell played 50 snaps for the Browns but caught just three passes for 27 yards. Bell is averaging just 0.8 yards per route run this season, the worst mark among rookie pass-catchers.

Offensive line spotlight: Cleveland put plenty of pressure on Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati offense, but it wasn’t enough. Every member of the Bengals line surrendered some volume of pressure.

Browns vs. Bengals Recap | Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase Chase Star in Bengals Victory Dec 12, 2022
    Show notes

Recap of the Browns vs. Bengals game. Ja'Marr Chase and Joe Burrow both played important roles in the final outcome. Tune in to find out what was the turning point of the game was and how the Cincinnati Bengals beat the Cleveland Browns in the battle for Ohio. Keep your eye out for my more Cleveland Browns analysis tomorrow from 11 am- 1:00 pm on The Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show. in the upcoming season!

Joe Burrow finally figured out how to win the Battle of Ohio. With their 23-10 victory over the Browns, the Bengals effectively snuffed out the Browns flickering playoff hopes -- although at 5-8, they haven’t been mathematically eliminated yet. The Bengals, in winning their fifth straight game, improved to 9-4 and snapped a five-game losing streak to the Browns. They had also lost eight of their last nine to the Browns, and Burrow couldn’t get the Browns’ monkey off his back.

He’s 3-0 against the Chiefs but couldn’t get past Myles Garrett and Browns. That all changed on Sunday, despite the fact Burrow was without three of his top weapons in tight end Hayden Hurst, Tee Higgins (hamstring) and Tyler Boyd (finger). But Ja’Marr Chase, who sat out the 32-13 Browns victory on Halloween night, caught 10 of 15 targets for 119 yards and a touchdown.

Burrow went 18 of 33 for 239 yards with 2 TDs and 1 INT for an 85.3 rating.

Deshaun Watson, in only his second game back after 700 days off, went 26 of 42 for 276 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT for a 79.1 rating. Nick Chubb rushed 14 times for only 34 yards. The Browns next opponent, the Ravens, beat the Steelers to improve to 9-4 and maintain their edge in the AFC North, but Lamar Jackson (knee) might still rest next Saturday.

Trailing 23-10, Watson was intercepted by safety Jessie Bates III on a pass intended for Donovan Peoples-Jones with 13:39 left in the game and the Bengals in field goal territory. But after they moved to the Browns 31, the Browns got an interception of their own keep themselves in the game. Jadeveon Clowney tipped the pass and Deion Jones picked it off. Unfortunately for the Browns, they were unable to cash in on the opportunity. They marched to the Bengals’ 6, but Watson threw three straight incompletions, including one to Amari Cooper out of the back of the end zone, and one to Donovan Peoples-Jones at the left corner when Cam Taylor-Britt broke up the pass.

The Bengals extended their lead to 20-3 on a flea-flicker that caught the Browns defense off guard. Burrow handed the ball to Joe Mixon, who flipped it back to Burrow, who found receiver Trenton Irwin wide open over the middle of the field for a 45-yard touchdown. Safeties Grant Delpit and most other Browns bit on the run, and Irwin had no defender within 15 yards of him. But the Browns answered the flea flicker with a touchdown of their own — a 13-yarder by David Njoku, who dove for the pylon. The drive ended with three straight completions to Njoku, who had missed three of the last four games with injuries. It marked Watson’s first touchdown pass.

Why Deshaun Watson Will Be Much Better Against The Bengals Dec 09, 2022
    Show notes

Deshaun Watson admitted that his return to Houston last week for the Browns’ 27-14 victory over the Texans hit him more emotionally than expected. “Yeah, I think last week, it was a lot,” Watson said Thursday. “The anticipation to just be back on the field, the anticipation of going back to my former team, the anticipation of playing against former teammates and being in front of a crowd that used to cheer for me at the time. So all that stuff was definitely, it was a lot. I’m human so I definitely have things running through my mind and through my just soul in general. Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt admitted that Watson had a lot on his plate in his return to Houston, where he spent the first five seasons of his career, and where most of the more than two dozen allegations of sexual misconduct took place.

Watson, who completed 12 of 31 attempts for 131 yards with no touchdowns and one interception for a 53.4 passer rating, has reason to believe he’ll be a lot better in Week 2 in Cincinnati than he was in Houston, where many of his passes were low, and he bounced one at Amari Cooper’s feet. He also rushed a throw in the end zone and was picked off by safety Jalen Pitre on a pass intended for Cooper. Watson acknowledged that sprinting from drill to drill on Wednesday was an effort to simulate the speed of the game and get his mind and body in synch. “Most definitely,” he said. “Just mind, body, everything. Just getting my conditioning going, wearing pads running, being able to move because in practice and training camp, I didn’t really scramble much, so in a live action being able to have to scramble and then come back and then do another play, call the play in the huddle, operate, sometimes hand it off, sometimes do a pass play. I gotta make sure that my conditioning is up. So any way I can just try to improve that, that’s what I’m going to do.”

Given the 700 days off, everything was adjustment, especially in the place he called home for five years. “I wouldn’t say (the game was) fast, it was just mostly just being able to adjust,” he said. “Like I said before, just really just the conditioning level, being able to go out there and operate, see things like I’ve been seeing it before and then get on the same page with the whole offensive staff of what we want to do for the game plan to execute.” As an anticipatory thrower, Watson found it tough to gauge the timing of receivers Donovan Peoples-Jones, Cooper, David Bell and Anthony Schwartz. This game, he’ll also have tight end David Njoku back from his knee injury. “Every receiver is different, especially on different routes with DPJ and Coop and D. Bell, all those guys are different route runners. So being able to know how they’re gonna come out, when they’re gonna come out, how they’re gonna come out and where they’re gonna be, it takes a little bit of time. But I gotta be able to adjust quick, especially if you want to be successful. And that’s my mindset is just trying to get extra reps, watch extra tape and just let them know what I’m thinking and try to see what they’re thinking on certain routes.”

Can Deshaun Watson And The Cleveland Browns Beat Joe Burrow And The Bengals? Dec 08, 2022
    Show notes

The Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals meet for the second time in 2022. Here’s a look at the odds and a prediction for their Week 14 matchup. Back in Week 8, the Cleveland Browns hosted the Cincinnati Bengals on Halloween night. It was the only Monday Night Football game for the Browns this season and they defeated the Bengals by a score of 32-13. It was a big win not only due to it being on a national stage but also because it stopped a horrendous four-game losing streak. Since then, Cleveland has gone 2-2 but the wins have come in back-to-back weeks Cincinnati, on the other hand, hasn’t lost since that night. They’ve now won four in a row and just scored a win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 13. With that being the case, they’re unsurprisingly the favorite entering Week 14.

Cincinnati is sitting at -6 right now in the odds with a -260 in the Moneyline, compared to +215 for the Browns. The over/under is 47.5, which might be low considering how these teams often play one another. This will be the second game for Deshaun Watson as the Cleveland starter and his debut left a lot to be desired. Of course, anyone who thought he would look the same as he did in 2020 was fooling themselves. With nearly two years off, he’s going to need some time to get reacclimated to the speed of the game. In this one, he will look better but it won’t be enough to outduel Joe Burrow. And while the Cleveland defense looked better against Houston, they’re still the same team we’ve seen getting steamrolled all year long.

Was Watson's First Start As Bad As It Looked | Check The Browns PFF Grades Dec 07, 2022
    Show notes

John Kosko of PFF joines the Locked On Browns Podcast to give grades for the Browns offense and defense against the Houston Texans. Kosko also breaks down the play of Browns QB Deshaun Watson in leading the Browns to a 27-14 victory over the Houston Texans. We discuss Deshaun Watson's performance, including his obvious rust in his first game back under center. We also give our thoughts on the Cleveland Brown's defense and special teams that came up big in the victory over the Texans.

Deshaun Watson struggled in a sloppy performance in his first game in 700 days but a punt return for a touchdown by Donovan Peoples-Jones and two defensive TDs were plenty enough to give the Cleveland Browns a 27-14 win over the lowly Houston Texans on Sunday. In the same stadium where he played his previous game, a rusty Watson threw for 131 yards with an interception in his debut for the Browns (5-7) against his former team in his return after serving an 11-game NFL suspension for sexual misconduct allegations. Plenty of fans attended the game wearing Watson’s No. 4 jersey from both the Texans (1-10-1) and the Browns, but there were also detractors with loud boos raining down on him every time he touched the ball.

The Browns trailed 5-0 early but a 76-yard punt return by Peoples-Jones put them on top in the second quarter and Denzel Ward’s 4-yard fumble return for a score pushed the lead to 14-5 early in the third quarter. Cleveland didn’t score on offense until a 43-yard field goal made it 17-8 with about 10 minutes remaining. The Browns added a second defensive score when Tony Fields intercepted Kyle Allen and returned it 16 yards on the next play.

Allen had a terrible day in his second start since Davis Mills was benched. He threw for 201 yards with a fumble that was returned for a touchdown and two interceptions, the second of which was returned for a score, as Houston’s skid stretched seven games.

Cleveland Browns victory over the Texans- On second watch Dec 06, 2022
    Show notes

The Cleveland Browns beat the Houston Texans on Sunday in the return of quarterback Deshaun Watson. Yes Watson looked rusty and it's because some football things can not be replicated in practice or training sessions. Those things will improve in the upcoming weeks. Sione Takitaki going down is a big blow for the Browns and for Taki himself with free agency looming. Tony Fields had a very impressive day and will see a ton of playing time over the final five games. Donovan Peoples Jones continues his impressive third season and is adding more to his repertoire. Perrion Winfrey and Alex Wright are getting more reps and are players who are improving as we get to the final weeks of the regular season. #Browns #DeshaunWatson

Cleveland Browns vs. Houston Texans INSTANT REACTION: Deshaun Watson FINALLY makes his debut Dec 05, 2022
    Show notes

Deshaun Watson finally made his debut for the Cleveland Browns.

It was a long time coming for the former Houston Texans quarterback, who made his first start for his new team against his old employer.

The first half of the game was ugly. The Browns' only points came on a 76-yard punt return touchdown from Donovan Peoples-Jones. Watson threw an interception and looked rusty. However, he did show signs of what makes him an elite quarterback by escaping the rush and finding open receivers on the outside. Nick Chubb got tackled in the end zone for a safety as well.

Defensively, the Browns continued to get gashed in the running game but held Kyle Allen in check in the air. Overall, the first half was as ugly as anything you've ever seen, as the Browns led 7-5 heading into break.

The second half was a similar story. The offensive stunk and the defense dominated.

All You Need To Know About Cleveland Browns Vs. Houston Texans | Deshaun Watson Debut Dec 03, 2022
    Show notes

When he takes the field on Sunday, Watson will have gone 700 days since he last played in a regular-season game. (Expect to hear that number a lot on Sunday). Watson was a full participant in the offseason program, training camp, and has a full week of practice under his belt, but there is no way of knowing how much rust he has and how long it will take him to get into a rhythm.

One thing working in Watson and the Browns favor is that Houston’s defense is not good, so he should be able to get in enough throws to be comfortable enough going into the next two games, which are key division tilts against the Cincinnati Bengals (+2) Given how poorly Houston is against the run, a nice game plan that features just enough passes from Watson to get him in a groove combined with a proactive running game that reaches into Cleveland’s depth to keep Chubb fresh should be on order for Sunday.

It’s the Browns, there must be some cause for concern?: It really doesn’t matter who they play, the Browns defense struggles to keep anyone in check when they are running with the football. That could be a problem against Houston rookie running back Dameon Pierce, who has rushed for 788 yards on the season. However, Pierce is in a bit of a slump as he has gained a total of 16 rushing yards over the past two games.

Nothing puts a hop in a running back’s step quite like playing the Browns, so Cleveland will have to keep an eye on Pierce to make sure he does not rediscover the mojo that saw him rush for 670 yards during a seven-game stretch earlier this season.

A healthy secondary: Cleveland received some good news on Friday as cornerback Greg Newsome II is expected to play after missing two games with a concussion, and fellow cornerback Denzel Ward is also on schedule to play after dealing with a tight hamstring in practice.

That gives the Browns their top trio of Ward, Newsome and rookie Martin Emerson Jr. – who had himself quite a game last week against Tampa Bay – back on the field together with an opportunity to get in some work as they prepare for next week’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

    Game Notes

The Browns remain among the league leaders in rushing as they are No. 2 with 18 rushing touchdowns, No. 5 with 1,698 rushing yards, No. 5 with 101 rushing first downs and No. 3 with 56 runs of 10-plus yards.

Cleveland wide receiver Amari Cooper is tied for fourth in the league with seven receiving touchdowns.

Cleveland running back Nick Chubb is one rushing touchdown away from setting a career high with 13. Chubb is also 164 rushing yards away from becoming the fourth running back in franchise history to rush for at least 6,000 career yards.

Houston is minus-2 in turnovers the past three games and have lost the turnover battle in five of their past six losses.

Cleveland defense end Jadeveon Clowney , Houston’s No. 1 selection in the 2014 NFL Draft, will play against the Texans for the first time in Houston.

    A Final Quote

Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski on expectations for quarterback Deshaun Watson’s impact on the offense (quote via a team-provided transcript):

“For this football team, for Deshaun and for the offense, they need to focus on playing good football this week. The big picture of what that means and that type of thing, I don’t think our guys are worried about that. We have to worry about our preparation this week and make sure that we have a good plan for Houston. We are excited that Deshaun is able to play for us. We are excited that he is back out there. The guys have enjoyed, like we mentioned, back in the room the last few weeks. Having him out on the field will bring an element to our offense that is different, but how different I think remains to be seen.”

Those are just a few things to keep an eye on; now it is time to have your say. What are you looking for from the Browns in Sunday’s game against the Texans?

Cleveland Browns Legend & Future Hall of Famer Joe Thomas Talks About Deshaun Watson's Impact Dec 02, 2022
    Show notes

In this video, Cleveland Browns Legend and Future Hall of Famer Joe Thomas talks about the impact Deshaun Watson will have on the Cleveland Browns. Joe has been around long enough to know the importance of a good quarterback, and he's impressed with Watson's abilities thus far. Deshaun Watson will return to the Cleveland Browns lineup on Sunday after serving an 11-game suspension, and head coach Kevin Stefanski is confident that the embattled quarterback "will be ready to roll" against his former team.

Stefanski fielded a number of questions about Watson’s ability to perform and connect with the team after the NFL reinstated him on Monday following a lengthy suspension over allegations of sexual misconduct made by more than two dozen women.

"As you know, we had Deshaun in the building for three weeks but not out on the field with us and then the last couple of weeks out on the field. Next step is obviously being out there taking all of the first team reps," Stefanski said. "He has been doing a nice job getting the defense ready with the scout team reps that he has gotten. I think he has done a nice job with his time away physically, staying sharp and mentally staying sharp so I think he will be ready to roll."

Watson will make his debut for the Browns against the Houston Texans on Sunday after signing a massive five-year, fully guaranteed $230 million contract in March. He last played on Jan. 3, 2020, but despite his significant time away, Stefanski was adamant that Watson would be ready to go.

"I have confidence in Deshaun based on his preparation. Really, the focus is on him just doing his job. We are still going to be all about the team effort and still offense, defense and special teams. This is never ever going to be about one person. As it relates to Deshaun, I believe in his preparation. I believe that he has worked really hard on a bunch of things to be ready to go."

"I certainly get it but can’t really control that," Stefanski said of the concern about Watson’s time away from the field.

"For me, for Deshaun and for all of our players, just have to keep the focus on doing our job. Think about there are some guys who don’t play preseason football, and they get in there Week 1 and need to get tackled the first time before they are ready to go. I think some of those things may be true, but I don’t want to put anything on Deshaun that I think is unfair for me to say at this point. We don’t know."

Watson was accused of being sexually inappropriate with the women during massage therapy sessions while playing in Houston. He was not indicted on criminal charges by two grand juries and reached financial settlements in 23 of 24 civil lawsuits.
