No. 25 BYU Edges Colorado 24-21 in Nail-Biting Big 12 Battle

The No. 25 BYU Cougars escaped Boulder with a thrilling and hard-fought 24-21 victory over the Colorado Buffaloes in a dramatic Saturday night Big 12 contest at Folsom Field. In a game that served as a heated rematch of the previous season's Alamo Bowl, the Cougars demonstrated their resilience, overcoming an early deficit and fighting off a late Colorado surge to remain undefeated.

Game Summary

Colorado came out firing, leaning heavily on the explosiveness of quarterback Kaidon Salter and wide receiver Dre'lon Miller to take an early lead. Miller, lining up at the wildcat, scored one of the Buffs' initial touchdowns, helping Colorado jump out to a 14-3 lead in the first quarter.

However, the BYU offense, led by true freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier, found its rhythm late in the first half. Bachmeier orchestrated a crucial touchdown drive, capped by a 5-yard scoring pass to Chase Roberts just before the break, narrowing the deficit to 14-10.

The second half was a back-and-forth defensive struggle that saw the lead change hands multiple times:

BYU Takes the Lead: The Cougars struck first in the third quarter. Facing a 4th-and-2, Bachmeier hit Roberts again for a 4-yard touchdown pass, giving BYU its first lead of the night at 17-14.

Colorado Responds: The Buffaloes quickly answered, with Salter connecting with Miller for a 19-yard touchdown pass to retake the lead, 21-17, heading into the final quarter.

The Go-Ahead Score: BYU delivered the decisive blow early in the fourth quarter. Wide receiver Cody Hagen took a rushing attempt 32 yards for a touchdown, putting the Cougars back on top, 24-21.

Defensive Climax

In the game's final minutes, the BYU defense proved to be the difference-maker. As Colorado attempted a potential game-winning or game-tying drive, linebacker Isaiah Glasker sealed the victory with a late interception of Kaidon Salter. Glasker, who was the Defensive MVP of the teams' previous bowl matchup, cemented the win by ensuring the Buffaloes never got a final shot at a field goal.

The hard-earned victory improves No. 25 BYU's record and provides a crucial road win as they navigate the tough waters of the Big 12 Conference. For Colorado, it was a bitter loss, highlighting their continued fight under Coach Prime but leaving them just short of a major upset.

WOW: TCU's Gary Patterson Drops TRUTH BOMB Over Mike Gundy Being Fired By Oklahoma State, Big 12 Tie Sep 27, 2025

Show notes

The firing of Mike Gundy from Oklahoma State marks the end of a remarkable, yet recently tumultuous, era. As the winningest coach in program history, his dismissal only three games into the 2025 season sent shockwaves through the college football world.

The Breakdown of the Firing

Timing and Immediate Cause:

Gundy was officially fired on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, after a disappointing 1-2 start to the 2025 season.

The final straw appeared to be a stunning home loss to in-state rival Tulsa, a program Gundy had never lost to during his tenure.

The loss to Tulsa immediately followed an embarrassing 69-3 blowout defeat at the hands of the Oregon Ducks.

The Bigger Picture: Two Seasons of Decline: The decision was ultimately based on a downward trend that began well before the 2025 season:

The 2024 Collapse: The team finished the 2024 season with a terrible 3-9 overall record, including their first winless conference record in 30 years and a season-ending 52-0 blowout loss to Colorado.

The Losing Streak: When he was fired, Oklahoma State was on an 11-game losing streak against FBS opponents, which was unacceptable for a program Gundy had elevated to a national contender.

Failure to Adapt to Modern CFB: Gundy had publicly struggled to fully embrace the new era of college football, especially the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) landscape and the Transfer Portal. He had made comments indicating reluctance toward aggressive NIL strategies, leading to concerns from the administration and donors about the program's competitiveness.

The Legacy and The Cost:

The Winningest Coach: Gundy was the quintessential Cowboy, a former OSU quarterback who led the program for over 20 seasons, accumulating 170 career wins and multiple 10-win seasons. He took the program to heights previously unseen, including a Big 12 Championship in 2011.

The Buyout: Oklahoma State will pay Gundy a $15 million buyout, an amount that was reportedly restructured last offseason (it was originally much higher) in what may have been an attempt to create an "off-ramp" for his departure.

Interim Coach: Offensive coordinator Doug Meacham was named the interim head coach for the remainder of the 2025 season.

The dismissal signals that the administration and key financial supporters prioritized a change in direction and a renewed commitment to competing at the highest level, even if it meant moving on from the most successful coach in school history.

HUGE: Gary Patterson, Mack Brown Have BOLD Top 25 Takes, BYU Into Poll, Utah Drops Out, Big 12 Good? Sep 26, 2025

Show notes

Week 5 is a colossal proving ground for the Big 12, with a stacked slate of conference games ready to redefine the league's championship picture. The biggest game on the docket is the Friday night showcase: No. 24 TCU at Arizona State. This clash of undefeated TCU (3-0) and reigning conference champion Arizona State (3-1) is critical. TCU's high-octane offense, led by QB Josh Hoover, faces an aggressive Sun Devils defense hoping to protect their seven-game home win streak. The winner gains a major early advantage in the race for the Big 12 Championship Game. Another pivotal matchup is the battle of undefeated newcomers and veterans: Arizona at No. 14 Iowa State. Arizona (3-0) boasts a top-10 scoring defense, providing a stark challenge for the Cyclones (4-0) and veteran QB Rocco Becht. A Wildcats road upset would validate their early success, while an Iowa State victory solidifies their status as a conference frontrunner. The league will also be watching two major storylines: The Utes' Desperation: Preseason favorite Utah, reeling from a brutal loss to Texas Tech, must travel to West Virginia for a crucial contest to avoid an 0-2 start. The New Era: Baylor visits Oklahoma State for the Cowboys' first game without Mike Gundy patrolling the sidelines, following the head coach's recent departure. Finally, the late-night game No. 25 BYU at Colorado offers a thrilling rivalry with CFP implications for the undefeated Cougars. With multiple undefeated teams still standing, Week 5 is set to separate the contenders from the pretenders in the new Big 12. Most UNDERRATED and OVERRATED Big 12 Teams, Drake Toll On ESPN 960 with Ben Criddle Sep 26, 2025

Show notes

Utah was widely considered a strong favorite and a potential Big 12 title contender entering their first season in the conference, but their play—especially in conference games—has been profoundly disappointing.

The core of the disappointment stems from the 2024 season's final record and poor conference standing.

Losing Record and Conference Woes: Utah finished the 2024 season with a losing record of 5–7 overall and a highly disappointing 2–7 in Big 12 play. They failed to become bowl-eligible, a shocking outcome for a program that had established itself as a perennial 9+ win team and two-time Pac-12 champion.

Offensive Struggles: The team's biggest issue was the offense, which was historically ineffective. Their scoring offense ranked 14th out of 16 teams in the Big 12 conference statistics. This was primarily attributed to a crippling wave of quarterback injuries throughout the season, which derailed any chance of offensive rhythm and forced them to use four different quarterbacks.

Inability to Close Games: They suffered several close, winnable losses in conference play to teams like TCU, Houston, and a heartbreaking defeat to rival BYU.

The Irony of the Defense: The disappointment is magnified by the fact that their defense remained elite, finishing 5th in the Big 12 in scoring defense (and 2nd overall for the entire season in the conference). The defense performed at a championship level, but the offense could not consistently hold up its end.

Heading into the 2025 season, the narrative of disappointment has recently been highlighted by a stunning home loss to Texas Tech. After a strong 3-0 start, the Utes were blown out 34-10 in their first ranked conference matchup of the year, with the offense again sputtering and committing four turnovers. This performance has dropped Utah out of the AP Top 25 and reignited concerns about the program's offensive identity and ability to compete against the new Big 12's best teams.

UPSET ALERT: BYU Plays BRUTAL ROAD GAME At Deion Sanders, Colorado, Overlooking Big 12 NIL Clash? Sep 26, 2025

Show notes

While BYU enters this weekend's game in Boulder as a top-25 team and a 6.5-point favorite, there are a number of factors that could lead to a Colorado upset. For the Buffaloes to pull it off, they will need to execute on a few key fronts.

1. Kaidon Salter's Continued Improvement

Colorado's hopes for an upset start with quarterback Kaidon Salter. After a shaky start to the season, he was benched in Week 3, but he rebounded with his best performance of the year in a win over Wyoming. His ability to use both his arm and his legs was on full display. For Colorado to upset BYU, Salter will need to be at his best, protecting the ball and being a threat in the running game to open up the offense.

2. Take Advantage of BYU's Inexperience

BYU is led by true freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier, who, while impressive in his first three starts, has yet to face a truly disruptive, blitz-heavy defense on the road in a hostile environment. Colorado's defense, led by its talented linebackers and safety Tawfiq Byard, will need to create pressure and force Bachmeier into making mistakes. If they can force turnovers and short-circuit BYU's offense, they can control the tempo of the game.

3. Establish the Run Game

To control the clock and keep BYU's explosive offense off the field, Colorado will need to establish the run game. Running backs Micah Welch and Simeon Price, both with over 140 rushing yards on the season, will be crucial. BYU's defense has been stellar, but if Colorado can wear them down in the trenches, it could open up play-action passing and tire out the Cougars' defensive front in the high altitude of Boulder.

4. Special Teams and Turnovers

Upset victories often hinge on the little things, and for Colorado, that means winning the turnover and special teams battle. BYU's defense has been opportunistic, forcing multiple turnovers in its last win, including a pick-six. Colorado cannot afford to give away free points or give BYU's offense a short field. If the Buffaloes can force a turnover or two and win the field position battle, they can put themselves in a position to win a low-scoring game.

LOL: Utah's SHOCKING Texas Tech Upset, BYU On Upset Watch, Mike Gundy FIRED at OSU | Big 12 Squad Sep 25, 2025

Show notes

Last week was an absolute chaotic carnival in Big 12 football, delivering a series of shocking results, major upsets, and significant shifts in the conference hierarchy. If you thought the league was wide open before, Week 4 blew the doors off the competition.

Here is a breakdown of how wild the week was:

1. The Preseason Favorite Crumbles

The biggest story of the weekend was the complete dismantling of the presumed Big 12 favorite.

Texas Tech Dominates Utah: The No. 17 Texas Tech Red Raiders flew into Salt Lake City and delivered a jarring 34-10 beatdown of No. 16 Utah. The Red Raiders' defense stifled the Utes' offense all game, holding them to just 10 points. The win not only marked Texas Tech as the new team to beat but also immediately put Utah at a massive disadvantage in the conference race at 0-1.

2. A Coaching Firing After a Rock-Bottom Loss

The results of the weekend led to a coaching change that sent shockwaves across the country.

Oklahoma State Upset by Tulsa: The Cowboys hit a new low, losing at home to in-state Group of Five rival Tulsa, 19-12. This stunning defeat—a loss to a team they were double-digit favorites against—was the final straw. Mike Gundy was fired just days later, ending the longest coaching tenure in the Big 12 and symbolizing just how quickly the landscape of the conference is changing.

4. Kansas’s Offense Continues to Shine

While not an upset, one team definitively proved they are a legitimate contender.

Kansas Rolls West Virginia: The Kansas Jayhawks dominated West Virginia, 41-10, in their conference opener. Quarterback Jalon Daniels and the Jayhawks' high-powered offense looked virtually unstoppable, signaling that Kansas is a serious threat to compete for a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game.

In summary, last week was marked by the biggest early-season upset of the Big 12 favorite, the ensuing firing of a legendary coach, and a dramatic, last-second win by one of the league's newest members. The results have essentially reset the league's power structure, proving that in the new 16-team Big 12, absolutely any team can win on any given Saturday.

BIG 12 BEST BETS: BYU Slams Colorado, Utah Over West Virginia, TCU Upsets Arizona State, Kansas? Sep 25, 2025

Show notes

This weekend's Big 12 football slate is a perfect microcosm of the conference's current identity: deep, unpredictable, and loaded with games that have major implications for the league's championship race. After a wild weekend that saw Texas Tech dismantle Utah and Mike Gundy lose his job, the drama only intensifies in Week 5.

Here are the key matchups highlighting how good the slate is:

Top 25 Showdown: TCU at Arizona State (Friday)

The weekend kicks off with a ranked showdown on Friday night. No. 24 TCU travels to Tempe to take on defending Big 12 champion Arizona State. This game is a pivotal early-season test for both. TCU is looking to prove its undefeated record is legitimate, while Arizona State is trying to hold serve at home and climb the rankings. This is a crucial early marker for the title race.

Undefeated Battle: Arizona at No. 14 Iowa State

Two undefeated teams clash in Ames as Arizona (3-0) visits No. 14 Iowa State (4-0). Iowa State's physical defense against Arizona's high-flying offense, led by quarterback Noah Fifita, makes this a must-watch. The winner moves to the front of the line of Big 12 title contenders and solidifies their spot in the national conversation.

Rivalry and Ranking Drama: No. 25 BYU at Colorado

The rivalry between No. 25 BYU and Colorado has been reignited, and this game in Boulder is going to be electric. BYU, despite its strong start, is on upset alert facing a Colorado team with nothing to lose in a hostile environment. With BYU's stout defense against Colorado's explosive plays, this late-night game on ESPN has all the makings of a classic.

High-Stakes Intrigue: Utah at West Virginia

A fascinating bounce-back game for both teams. Utah travels to West Virginia needing a win to avoid an 0-2 start in the Big 12 after its stunning loss to Texas Tech. Meanwhile, West Virginia is looking to reset its own season after a disappointing defeat to Kansas. This game will reveal which program has the mental toughness to correct course early in the season.

The slate is defined by high-stakes matchups where nearly every outcome will shake up the conference standings and create significant movement in the AP Poll.

Drake Toll Drops TRUTH About Texas Tech, Utah On ESPN 1660, Previews TCU, Arizona State Sep 24, 2025

Show notes

Saturday, September 20, was a perfect example of why the Big 12 is arguably the most competitive conference in college football. The day was filled with upsets, thrilling finishes, and major statement victories that reshaped the early-season landscape. The biggest story was Texas Tech's commanding 34-10 road win over Utah. In a matchup between two top-20 teams, the Red Raiders' defense completely shut down the physical Utah offense, validating Texas Tech as a legitimate contender. Meanwhile, the new members of the conference continued to prove their worth. In Waco, Arizona State, the defending Big 12 champion, showcased its grit with a 27-24 victory over Baylor, sealed with a last-second field goal. BYU, despite a close start, went on the road and defeated a tough East Carolina team 34-13, solidifying its strong start to the season. The day also saw surprising blowouts. Kansas dominated West Virginia, winning 41-10 in a game that was uncompetitive from the start. The Jayhawks' offense was explosive, while their defense made key plays and forced turnovers. Similarly, UCF continued its impressive start, soundly defeating North Carolina 34-9, further cementing the Big 12's strong performance against the ACC this season. Saturday's results left no doubt about the depth and parity of the Big 12. There is no clear-cut favorite, and a number of teams have emerged as legitimate threats to win the conference championship. The unpredictability of the league, where any team can win on any given Saturday, makes it one of the most exciting conferences to watch in college football. BREAKING: Mike Gundy FIRED By Oklahoma State, HALL OF FAME Coach NEEDED to Go, Big 12 Legend GONE! Sep 23, 2025

Show notes

Multiple reputable sources are reporting that Mike Gundy has been fired as the head football coach at Oklahoma State University. The news comes after the Cowboys' disappointing 1-2 start to the 2025 season, which was capped off by a loss to in-state rival Tulsa.

Here is a breakdown of the situation:

The Firing: According to reports from multiple outlets including Sports Illustrated and On3, Oklahoma State informed Gundy on Tuesday that he was being relieved of his duties, effective immediately. This ends a 21-season tenure where he became the winningest coach in program history with a record of 170-90.

The On-Field Struggles: The decision was largely prompted by the team's poor performance over the past two seasons. The Cowboys finished the 2024 season with a 3-9 record and went winless in the Big 12, the first time that had happened in Gundy's career. The 2025 season started with more disappointment, including a 69-3 blowout loss to Oregon in Week 2 and a home loss to Tulsa this past weekend.

The Financials: The firing comes despite Gundy's recently restructured contract, which he agreed to in the offseason to remain at Oklahoma State. The new deal included a buyout of $15 million if he was to be fired in the first three years, a sum the university is reportedly willing to pay to move in a new direction.

The Legacy: Gundy leaves behind a complicated but highly successful legacy.
