BOMBSHELL: Chris Klieman LEAVING Kansas State, Collin Klein HIRED As Wildcats Head Coach | Carousel Dec 03, 2025

Show notes

Chris Klieman's tenure at Kansas State, succeeding the legendary Bill Snyder, was defined by blue-collar toughness and steady success. Imported from FCS powerhouse North Dakota State, where he won four national titles, Klieman swiftly instilled a culture of discipline and player development. His philosophy prioritized physicality and winning in the trenches. His greatest on-field achievement came in 2022 when he guided the Wildcats to a Big 12 Championship, solidifying his impressive overall record of 54-34 over seven seasons. Klieman's era was about maintaining relevance and grit in a constantly changing Big 12 landscape.

The foundation of Klieman’s most successful period involved program legend Collin Klein. Klein first became an icon in Manhattan as the “Minister of Mayhem,” a Heisman Trophy finalist quarterback in 2012 who led the team to a conference title. He later returned to K-State as an assistant coach, earning a promotion to Offensive Coordinator under Klieman in 2022. This partnership proved potent: Klein designed the low-turnover, high-efficiency offense that powered the Wildcats to the 2022 Big 12 crown.

The veteran head coach entrusting his offense to a beloved alum established Klein as the clear heir apparent. Though Klein briefly left to serve as the Offensive Coordinator for Texas A&M, his ties to Manhattan never wavered. Following reports in late 2025 that Klieman was retiring, Klein emerged as the undisputed choice to take over as head coach. This transition ensures a seamless return to the core program identity—the "Wildcat Way"—while injecting a fresh, dynamic perspective into the program’s future leadership.

ANALYST: BYU UPSETS Texas Tech In Big 12 Championship, Bear Bachmeier Shines As Kalani Sitake Stays Dec 03, 2025

Show notes

The 2025 Edward Jones Big 12 Championship is set for a historic clash as the No. 4 Texas Tech Red Raiders (11-1, 8-1) face the No. 11 BYU Cougars (11-1, 8-1) on Saturday, December 6, at AT&T Stadium. For both programs, this marks their inaugural appearance in the Big 12 title game, with the winner not only claiming the conference crown but also securing a crucial automatic berth into the newly expanded College Football Playoff (CFP).

The matchup is a compelling rematch, as the Red Raiders previously dominated the Cougars 29-7 just weeks ago. Texas Tech's primary strength lies in its elite defense, which ranks among the nation’s best, leading the FBS in success rate and allowing a mere 11.2 points per game. Key to their success is the defensive line, anchored by standout linebacker David Bailey. On offense, the Red Raiders rely on a healthier senior quarterback Behren Morton, who guides a unit capable of racking up high yardage totals.

BYU, meanwhile, will look to avenge its earlier defeat. The Cougars’ game plan hinges on running back LJ Martin, who has surpassed 1,200 rushing yards this season, and the maturation of freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier. However, the BYU offense faces a brutal challenge trying to establish the run against Tech’s stout defensive front, which stifled them in the first meeting. For BYU, a victory is a non-negotiable requirement to keep their slim CFP hopes alive. Texas Tech, already holding a massive 98.2% chance of making the CFP according to the Football Power Index (FPI), can likely secure a first-round bye with a win.

The outcome of this game will solidify the Big 12’s status in the new playoff format and define the season for the winner. Given Texas Tech’s dominant defense and recent head-to-head victory, they enter Arlington as comfortable favorites, but championship games often bring unexpected results.

CONFIRMED: Kalani Sitake STAYING AT BYU, Turns Down Penn State Head Coach Opening in Carousel Dec 02, 2025

Show notes

Drake Toll joined The Pete Sousa Show to talk Kalani Sitake remaining the head football coach at Brigham Young University, rejecting lucrative offers from established Power Four programs like Penn State, which represents a defining moment for the Cougars' athletic future. This choice goes beyond a simple contract negotiation; it underscores the institutional value of cultural fit and signals BYU's commitment to fully investing in its Big 12 trajectory. Sitake, an alumnus and the program's leader since 2016, validated the unique BYU culture he has championed, prioritizing his foundational connection over the prestige of a traditional football power.

Sitake’s retention was secured through a "lucrative" long-term contract, reportedly elevating his annual salary significantly. Crucially, the negotiation successfully addressed the financial necessities of top-tier college football by ensuring substantial commitments to his assistant coaches and a major influx of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) resources. These resource guarantees, which sources suggest involve an additional $10 to $15 million in NIL funding, equip the program to compete for talent against wealthier rivals.

The impact of Sitake’s continuity is profound. After guiding BYU through its successful transition from FBS independence into the Power Four, his 83-44 career record, highlighted by an 11-1 campaign in 2025, guarantees stability. His continued leadership ensures that the Cougar program maintains its unique identity and cultural cohesion, a rare achievement in the volatile coaching landscape. Sitake's choice solidifies the foundation for sustained competitive relevance in the Big 12, affirming BYU’s readiness to invest in a leader who embodies the university’s mission.

SOURCE: Kalani Sitake STAYING at BYU After... briefly... LEAVING for Penn State | Crumbl Cookies Dub Dec 02, 2025

Show notes

The closest Brigham Young University came to losing head football coach Kalani Sitake occurred in late 2025, just as the Cougars were completing one of their most successful seasons and preparing for the Big 12 Championship game. The crisis was triggered by the vacancy at Penn State, a Big Ten "blue blood" program that aggressively targeted Sitake as its next leader.

The pursuit became very public, with flight trackers and reports of contract negotiations creating intense anxiety in Provo. The core issue was a stark financial discrepancy: Sitake, an alum who had piloted BYU’s transition into the Big 12, was widely estimated to be earning around $3 million annually. Penn State, operating with Power Four financial muscle, was rumored to be preparing an offer in the eight-figure range, potentially approaching $10 million per year.

For Sitake, the decision was a profound clash between professional ambition and personal devotion. He is famously tied to BYU—a former player, a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a cultural pillar of the Provo community. However, the financial security and higher ceiling offered by Penn State were impossible to ignore, forcing BYU’s administration to make an immediate, market-correcting decision.

The standoff culminated in BYU successfully retaining its coach. The university finalized a reported long-term contract extension, extending his commitment through the 2029–2030 season and crucially allocating significantly more funds for his assistant coaches and staff. Sitake’s decision affirmed his deep loyalty to his alma mater and the program's unique culture of “love and learning,” but it took a genuine, high-dollar threat from a national power to solidify his financial value in Provo.

UPDATE: BYU "Can't Match" Penn State's Offer for Kalani Sitake, Per Source, Coaching Carousel is HOT Dec 01, 2025

Show notes

Rumors linking BYU head coach Kalani Sitake to the Penn State vacancy have intensely heated up as the Nittany Lions' coaching search stretches into its 50th day following the mid-season firing of James Franklin. Sitake’s name has risen dramatically, propelled by a combination of his recent success and other top candidates signing extensions elsewhere.

The Real Talk and The "Why"

Sources now indicate that discussions between Penn State and Sitake are "very real," with talks intensifying over the past ten days and even touching on contract parameters. The interest stems from Sitake’s proven track record: his 83-44 overall record at BYU, four 10-win seasons, and successfully guiding the Cougars through their transition into the Big 12, culminating in an 11-1 season and a Big 12 Championship berth this year.

However, the speculation is also intertwined with Sitake’s current contract and loyalty. He is an alumnus who is deeply rooted in BYU’s culture, which leads some observers to question the sincerity of the move, suggesting it might be a leverage play to secure more resources and a substantial contract extension in Provo.

The Financial and Cultural Questions

A major factor fueling the rumors is money. Sitake's current salary of approximately $3 million per year is on the lower side for a Power Four head coach, especially compared to the financial resources Penn State can offer. While he would bring proven coaching and leadership ability, critics cite his exclusively West Coast ties as a potential challenge for recruiting in the Northeast and Big Ten.

The timing adds complexity, as Sitake is currently preparing the No. 11 Cougars for their Big 12 Championship game against No. 5 Texas Tech, making the rumors a significant distraction for the program.

BIG 12 POWER RANKINGS: BYU Surges, Texas Tech Holds, Utah is Elite, West Virginia Falls, TCU Rises? Dec 01, 2025

Show notes

The final weekend of the Big 12 regular season (November 28th and 29th, 2025) delivered a decisive conclusion, officially locking in the matchup for the Conference Championship and featuring several dominant performances from the league's top teams. Texas Tech and BYU Secure Their Spots Both Texas Tech and BYU won their respective games to finish with an identical 11-1 overall record and 8-1 in conference play, securing their highly-anticipated rematch in the Big 12 Championship game. Texas Tech dismantled West Virginia on the road, winning 49-0. Quarterback Behren Morton and the Red Raiders' offense racked up over 500 total yards, while the defense posted a complete shutout, holding the Mountaineers to just 180 total yards. This dominant performance solidified the No. 5 Red Raiders' CFP resume. BYU took care of business at home, defeating UCF 41-21. The No. 11 Cougars’ offense proved too much for the Knights, ensuring their place in the title game and quashing any last-minute tiebreaker scenarios. Other Key Results The rest of the league had a mix of close calls and high-scoring affairs: Utah (10-2, 7-2) secured a win, but were pushed by Kansas late, winning 31-21. The Utes remain a strong contender for an at-large College Football Playoff bid. Arizona (9-3, 6-3) defeated rival Arizona State 23-7 in the Territorial Cup, thanks to a strong defensive performance that forced five turnovers. TCU outlasted Cincinnati in a high-scoring battle, winning 45-23. The results confirm that the Big 12 title will be decided by the No. 5 Red Raiders and No. 11 Cougars next weekend in Arlington. BREAKING: Kalani Sitake Named TOP Candidate to LEAVE BYU for Penn State Opening... But He WON'T. Nov 30, 2025

Show notes

BYU head coach Kalani Sitake has recently emerged as a significant and unexpected candidate linked to the Penn State head coaching vacancy, following the mid-season firing of James Franklin. The rumors have gained considerable momentum as several early, high-profile targets—including Curt Cignetti, Matt Rhule, and Eli Drinkwitz—have signed contract extensions to remain at their current programs, narrowing Penn State's list of proven candidates.

The Source of the Speculation

Sitake's sudden surge is largely driven by movement on predictive betting markets, specifically Kalshi, where his odds to be the next Nittany Lions head coach have climbed sharply, placing him among the top two contenders alongside James Madison's Bob Chesney and ahead of Alabama's Kalen DeBoer. This has prompted speculation that he could be the "mystery" candidate that had been hinted at by media observers.

Why Sitake is a "Wild Card"

The interest in Sitake is noteworthy because he is a non-traditional fit for a Penn State search. He has spent his entire coaching career on the West Coast, is an alumnus of BYU (where he played fullback from 1997-2000), and has deep ties to the program's unique culture. However, his 10 seasons at BYU and his strong 82-44 overall record show a proven track record of stabilizing a program for the long run.

In his time at BYU, Sitake has produced four 10-win seasons and has successfully guided the Cougars through their difficult transition into the Big 12 Conference, clinching a spot in the Big 12 Championship game this year. This credibility of managing a significant shift and maintaining a competitive program in a Power conference makes him an intriguing, albeit unexpected, candidate for the permanent Penn State job.

HUGE WEEK: BYU DRUBS UCF, Texas Tech ROLLS, Utah is CFP-Caliber, Arizona Stuns, Houston Legit, TCU? Nov 30, 2025

Show notes

Texas Tech and BYU are set to face off in the Big 12 Football Championship game on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. This highly anticipated matchup marks the first-ever appearance for both programs in the Big 12 title game, a significant achievement for two of the conference's premier teams this season. BYU's journey is particularly notable, clinching a championship berth in just their third year as a Big 12 member.

Championship Stakes and History

The game in Arlington, often referred to as a "rematch," follows a regular-season contest where Texas Tech dominated BYU, winning 29-7 in Lubbock in early November. Both teams enter the championship with identical 10-1 overall records and an impressive 7-1 conference record, setting the stage for a dramatic showdown. For both squads, the outcome carries massive weight: the winner will secure an automatic bid into the new 12-team College Football Playoff (CFP), while the loser will still have a strong case for an at-large bid. Texas Tech, having already flexed its defensive muscle against the Cougars earlier this season, will be looking to cement its status as the conference's top team and claim its first Big 12 title. BYU, however, will be hungry for revenge and redemption on the grand stage.

The atmosphere in Arlington will be electric as the two Big 12 newcomers battle for conference supremacy.

GLORY: BYU SLAMS UCF, Texas Tech ROLLS West Virginia to CLINCH Big 12 Championship Rematch In Texas Nov 29, 2025

Show notes

The new era of the Big 12 culminates in a dramatic championship game featuring two teams that defied early projections: the BYU Cougars and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. This matchup is a testament to the league’s new, competitive parity, pitting BYU's renowned defensive grit against Texas Tech's explosive, high-tempo offensive attack.

For BYU, this appearance validates their long journey from independence and their commitment to physical football. The Cougars’ path to the title game was paved by their elite secondary and a punishing run game, consistently controlling the clock and demoralizing opponents in the fourth quarter. The key to victory for BYU will be establishing dominance in the trenches early, limiting the Red Raiders’ possessions, and forcing long, methodical drives.

Meanwhile, Texas Tech’s ascension is the product of an aggressive offensive identity under their head coach. Their quarterback is a dual-threat maestro, capable of stretching the field vertically while utilizing an intricate rushing attack. Tech’s defense has also matured, showing a knack for timely turnovers. The Red Raiders thrive on chaos and momentum; if they score quickly, the game could turn into an unmanageable shootout for the Cougars.

The critical matchup to watch is the Red Raiders’ wide-open passing game against BYU’s veteran cornerbacks. If BYU’s defensive line, especially its interior rushers, can generate consistent pressure, they will disrupt the rhythm necessary for Tech's offense to flourish. However, if Texas Tech successfully dictates the pace and converts third downs, the game will belong to Lubbock. The stakes are immense: a major conference title and a guaranteed berth in the College Football Playoff for the winner. Expect a physical, down-to-the-wire battle that defines the identity of the expanded Big 12.

BOOM: BYU Host CALLS OUT College Football Playoff Committee for CHEATING the Big 12 | Big 12 Squad Nov 27, 2025

Show notes

The College Football Playoff committee’s perceived lack of "love" for the Big 12 stems from a fundamental bias toward two key factors the conference historically lacked: undefeated champions and entrenched "blue blood" brands. During the four-team era, the Big 12’s round-robin scheduling and deep parity often resulted in conference champions carrying one or two losses. While this demonstrated the league's competitive depth, the committee often penalized this "cannibalization." Instead of rewarding a team that survived a gauntlet, the CFP favored the narrative simplicity and media pull of unbeaten teams from the SEC or Big Ten, even those with weaker non-conference schedules. This was exemplified in 2014 when the 11-1 co-champions were left out for a less-tested Ohio State. In the newly expanded 12-team playoff, the issue shifts from outright exclusion to seeding bias. While the Big 12 champion now receives an automatic bid, the historical lack of respect often translates into a lower ranking. A 10-2 Big 12 champion may find itself seeded fifth or sixth, forfeiting a crucial first-round bye, while a 10-2 team from another perceived "super-conference" is ranked fourth. This continued undervaluation is rooted in brand perception. With Texas and Oklahoma having departed, the Big 12 lacks the narrative heft and established national dominance of the traditional powers. Until the conference establishes a new era of singular, top-tier elite programs—or until the committee begins to genuinely reward high-quality, strength-of-record wins over simple win-loss totals—the feeling that the CFP does not "love" the Big 12 will persist.
