Wisconsin Badgers football game thoughts for Illinois State, what can we learn plus your comments on the show ! Sep 02, 2022

Show notes

The Wisconsin Badgers are playing football this weekend against Illinois State. I talk about the things we can learn from playing an outmatched opponent. With a revamped coaching staff on the offensive side of the ball, we are watching to see how crisp the offense is - a bevy of penalties is a bad sign going forward for this team. We also talk about Graham Mertz and Bobby Engram, how will the new look passing game perform and will we see some of the balance that Paul Chryst has talked about ?

In the next two segments of Locked On Badgers we get your user comments on the show. Lots of talk about QB recruiting; we get into the upcoming visit from Ryan Browne and why it might make sense to take two QBs this cycle. We talk about the defensive secondary and how the athletic group has a lot of upside but may still some seasoning. Finally we talk about Paul Chryst and the hope that he might be a little more aggressive this year.

Wisconsin Badgers football recruiting, QB targets with Ryan Browne and Cole LaCrue taking visits. Sep 01, 2022

Show notes

The Wisconsin Badgers football recruiting efforts ramp up with several quarterbacks coming to Madison. We start with Ryan Browne a 6-4 QB playing in New York. John talks about why Browne has flown under the radar and specifically why his skill-set is so intriguing. He's a big framed kid with the ability to move around in the pocket and make some plays with his feet. He has also won a state title in Florida.

Next we talk about Cole LaCrue, the 6-2 gunslinger from Colorado, both John and I love his ability to improvise and make plays off-script. He also has a really good arm and shows the ability to nail some deep throws. He's a player that is starting to see his interest blow up.

Finally we talk about in-state QB Jerry Kaminski, and why he's a little bit of a blend between Browne and LaCrue. We discuss his commitment to North Dakota and why that should raise some eyebrows with that program's ability to churn out QBs. Finally we talk about which QB the Badgers should prioritize, John thinks Ryan Browne from a recruiting profile perspective might have the most options with his frame and arm.

Wisconsin Badgers football, is Graham Mertz ready for week one ? Aug 31, 2022

Show notes

Its finally here, the Wisconsin Badgers and the Illinois State Redbirds kick off week 1 of the college football season. We talk about what Paul Chryst and the Badgers need to do in week 1 for a successful game and a successful stepping point for the rest of the year. Why Graham Mertz and the passing game need to be given the opportunities to throw early and often as that unit desperately needs the reps and continuity to build on throughout the year. Paul Chryst needs to use week one as an opportunity to work on the passing game. I talk about all of the new components in the passing eco-system and why the reps are going to be so important in the first three weeks.

We introduce the Illinois State program, how did they do last year and on the cupcake scale how tough are they ? Are there any areas they might be able to stress the Badgers and keep the game close. We talk about what a dominant Badgers game could mean for the rest of the year and how much to overract to a potential week one beatdown. We discuss the importance of getting through the early stretch of games as quickly as possible without injuries, which means hopefully getting a lot of the starters out in the second half and using those reps as opprotuniteis to build depth at several positions on the team.

Wisconsin Badgers football defensive backs preview, can Jay Shaw and Alexander Smith be a great duo? Aug 30, 2022

Show notes

Jay Shaw and Alexander Smith anchor what could be the deepest group of cornerbacks in the Paul Chryst and Jim Leonard era. The Badgers staff did an incredible job in the transfer portal this off-season brining in Jay Shaw, Cedrick Dort and Justin Clark to help bolster what would have been a depleted group of defensive backs. Specifically Jay Shaw the UCLA transfer might have a huge impact with his experience, size and athletic ability.

Next we talk about the duo at safety with veteran John Torchio and youngster Hunter Wholer ready to step into his sizeable expecations as the former 4* safety looks to deliver on the promise. We discuss if Torchio is the ideal running-mater for Wholer and what could make or break this safety group this season.

Finally on Locked On Badgers we grade the group for this season and for the upcoming years. Justin is very high on this group and delivers a B+ grade for this season, I'm a little lower as I don't fully trust the safety depth. Looking into the future we discuss the potential of young corners Jace Arnold and Ayvonne Jones - both high-upside young players.

Wisconsin Badgers football LBs preview. Nick Herbig is a star and Jordan Turner is going to be huge! Aug 29, 2022

Show notes

Wisconsin Badgers football outside linebackers preview, Nick Herbig is a total star and one of the best players in college football. How well will he adjust to more attention this year as opposing offense key in on him more ? We discuss why this is likely his last season in Madison as a future NFL contract looms for him. We discuss his running mate in CJ Goetz and why the solid veteran fills a vital role on the team. We also discuss the high potential of the younger players on the roster with Darryl Peterson, TJ Bollers and Kaden Johnson backing up the OLBs.

Next we move into the ILBs and why this team can't fully replace Leo Chenal and Jack Sanborn. The Badgers have four bodies and plenty of depth, I discuss why I think Jordan Turner and Jake Chaney will likely emerge as two of the most dependable players in that group.

Finally on Locked On Badgers, I talk grades! I think the OLBs are a B+ for this with some minor questions about depth and I have ILBs as a C+ -- I like the upside but there are real questions about the youth at that spot.

Bubu Benjamin recruiting news. Scouting Klesmit/McGee for the Wisconsin Badgers basketball team. Aug 27, 2022

Show notes

Bubu Benjamin is an intriguing prospect the Badgers are after, what does his game look like? We also do some scouting work on transfers Max Klesmit and Kamari McGee. We start with Bubu an athletic wing prospect with enough size to guard multiple positions on the court. Jason Jordan discusses what it means that Bubu made the Canadian National team and what his potential upside is. We discuss why players like Bubu sometimes don't get a lot of attention in the recruiting cycle.

Next we discuss the two Badgers transfers in the off-season; the Badgers brought in SG Max Klesmit and PG Kamari McGee. Jason talks about Max as a really solid option coming in to fill the 4th or 5th option on an offense - a guy that can hit some open shots and play well within the scheme the Badgers play. Next we talk about McGee and Jason loves his game - he thinks he has a unique speed / quickness aspect that many players do not have. Jason believes Kamari has starter upside even if it won't happen with Chucky Hepburn on the roster.

Wisconsin Badgers football defensive line preview, Keeanu Benton is a star Rodas Johnson is next. Aug 26, 2022

Show notes

Its time to talk about Keeanu benton and just how good the Wisconsin Badgers defensive man is. He's a complete star, but he's joined by Rodas Johnson, Isaiah Mullens and James Thompson Jr along a rebuilt defensive line. We start with Keeanu benton and just how unusual it is for an unheralded defensive line recruit to become a four-year contributor. His ability to control the LOS could blossom into an All-American season for the senior.

Next we talk about the two exciting and athletic defensive ends that will be stepping into the spotlight this year. Both Rodas Johnson and James Thompson figure to play a huge role for the defense this season and will be counted on to provide some pass-rush from the edges.

Finally on Locked On Badgers we discuss the future at the spot, how does the young depth look on the line and who are the younger players that have us excited ?

Wisconsin Badgers football the WR preview, will Chimere Dike go off this year, Skyler Bell the #2 ? Aug 25, 2022

Show notes

The Wisconsin Badgers football wide receiver preview, just how good is Chimere Dike - do we know ? What about the next wave of Skyler Bell, Markus Allen, Dean Engram and the new recruiting class joining the program?

We start with Chimere Dike and a discussion on if he can be the true number one receiver ? Both Scott and I think he can be, but he needs to prove it on the field. Scott thinks he can have a Quintez Cephus type season and really blow up -- potentially even getting some NFL looks. We talk about the very talented young duo of Markus Allen and Skyler Bell and why both of these players need to be utilized right now. We are hopeful with Bobby Engram calling plays and better oline play under Coach Bostad; the WRs can really shine this season.

Finally on Locked On Badgers we grade the position -- Scott and I disagree slightly on the grade for this year; but we are both very bullish on the future for this group.

Wisconsin Badgers football offensive line preview, Jack Nelson, Joe Tippman and Bob Bostad are ready! Aug 24, 2022

Show notes

Jack Nelson might be the next Badgers star on the offensive line, we talk about the gigantic impact Bob Bostad might have after moving over in the off-season to coach the offensive line. He has a history of turning players in Madison into NFL players. We discuss the move of Tyler Beach into a new spot at guard and why we both think he has a better path to the NFL in that position.

We also discuss the tremendous amount of depth on the line with 8 4 or 5 star players and why that bodes so well in the future for the spot and for the Wisconsin Badgers offense. We discuss why the improved line play will make a big difference for Graham Mertz and how good this line will be in a couple years.

Wisconsin Badgers football tight end preview, can Clay Cundiff replace Jake Ferguson ? Aug 23, 2022

Show notes

We go through the TE depth chart for Wisconsin and talk about Clay Cundiff, Hayden Rucci, Jaylin Franklin and potential future star in JT Seagreaves.

I talk about Jake Ferguson and what his departure might mean to the rest of the tight end depth chart; how big of a hole does that leave for Wisconsin and are the host of young players ready to replace that production. I discuss the best and worst case scenarios for the position and why the injury bug is still very much a concern for this spot on the roster.

I also grade the TE room, why do I think the long-term outlook is potentially better than this year's group --- that leads me into JT Seagreaves who I think is one of the most underrated recruits from last year's recruiting cycle.
