treating everyone the same, growth, business, and change with Ellen Marie Bennett CEO of Hedley & Bennett and author of Dream First Details later 🐷🐣 Jun 04, 2021
    Show notes

Ellen is the founder and CEO of Hedley & Bennett, an apron and workwear company, whose signature ampersand logo can be seen on top chefs around the world. Born and raised in LA to a Mexican mother and English father, she felt a strong connection to Mexico and ended up moving there when she was 18. Today we talked about what she learned being a 24-year-old line cook who told her head chef she could make the restaurant aprons. Soon she had a company. We talk about what she learned from her grandmother in Mexico about treating everyone with care, as well as productivity, process, time management, and Ellen gives the best dinner party hosting advice I’ve ever heard.

annual birthday catch-up with Sacha Jones processing grief, loss, and closure 🌴 Apr 29, 2021
    Show notes

Every year my dear friend Sacha Jones comes back on the podcast around my birthday for a conversation. She is one of the most creative, wise, and gentle people I know and I always love speaking with her. Our annual catch-ups end up being time capsules of what we've learned the past year both from the podcast and from what's happened around us. Like most people, Sacha and I both had a wild year personally and collectively so we unpack the ways we've changed. We cover grief, loss, closure, and leaving new york, but it's not all heavy! We also talk about Sacha getting her photo taken by Bill Cunningham while riding her bike, and more.

dating as a hopeless romantic, indecision, and dealing with highs and lows with Lore Yessuff 😍 Apr 23, 2021
    Show notes

Loré is one of my favorite writers. We originally connected when she reached out to interview me for The Creative Independent. She has written about intimacy, identity, and interconnection for The New York Times and Man Repeller. She also facilitates writing workshops and has a monthly newsletter called All The Reasons I've Cried Lately. In this week’s episode, we get into dating and bond over the fact that we’re both hopeless romantics. We cover social media, indecision, intention, writing, moving to New York, and dealing with life’s highs and lows. And we discuss some of her essays and poems.

don't yuck my yum Fishwife's Caroline Goldfarb & Becca Millstein on comedy, food shame, friendship, etc. 🐠 Apr 16, 2021
    Show notes

This week I spoke with two guests, Becca Millstein and Caroline Goldfarb. Living with each other at the beginning of the pandemic and observing each other's eating eventually led them to a business idea: a tinned fish company called Fishwife. This week we talk about the stigma associated with eating foods that people scoff at, working with close friends, and transitioning careers. Becca's background is in the music industry and Caroline is a comedy writer, podcast host, and viral internet artist who goes by the name Official Sean Penn on IG. We cover writing, juggling multiple projects, collaborations, productivity, and the habits and routines that help them with it all.

but you're still so young, redefining our 30s with kayleen schaefer Apr 09, 2021
    Show notes

This week one of my favorite authors returns. Kayleen Schaefer is a journalist and author of Text Me When You Get Home, she also wrote the bestselling Kindle Single memoir Fade Out. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, Vogue, and many other publications. Her new book, But You’re Still So Young, is out now. It follows eight people struggling to make the leap to adulthood. It includes sociological research and weaves in her own story. In this episode we talk about how this generation is redefining what it's like to be in our 30s. And how a checklist that sociologists created in the 1950s is no longer relevant, or even possible for many. The checklist was: "finish school, leave home, make your own money, marry and become a parent." We talk about how race, class, and privilege play into the ability and desire to meet these old benchmarks. Plus, we cover Kayleen's writing rituals, how they've changed, her advice to writers, and more.

intuitive movement, change, eating disorder recovery, and romance with helen phelan ✨ Mar 19, 2021
    Show notes

This week I spoke with my friend Helen Phelan, a body neutral intuitive pilates instructor and founder of digital pilates and mindful fitness platform, Helen Phelan Studio. As an ex-professional dancer and eating disorder survivor, Helen's approach to exercise is based on her lived experience that diet culture keeps people stuck in a bad body image loop that makes them dread movement despite its mood and energy boosting benefits. Her methodology is movement in a non-harmful, post-recovery form. We met when I took a class of hers in NYC and have collaborated on events and digital workshops (available here). She's been featured in InStyle, HuffingtonPost, and Well+Good. When she's not working she is snuggling her rescue pup or hiking in the Catskills. In this episode, we discuss communication, patience, bodies, movement, pilates, eating disorder recovery, romantic relationships, and more.
