Lessons From A Len Master Jul 31, 2020
    Show notes

    Lessons from the Len Master
Successful people tend to have certain traits in common: determination, focus, the ability to work hard and a set of patterns that they have refined over their lifespans.
But some people have an advantage; they have a parent or mentor that can deliver a world of wisdom and avoid the mistakes that come from trial and error. Ron Zayas, the author of this book, had that advantage and shares it with his readers.
The book captures knowledge passed on from Ron’s quirky father Len (the “Len Master” in the title). Using family dinners, long nights playing chess and numerous analogies, Len instructs his son on the key strategies and attributes necessary to be success at work and life.
Using short, humorous stories from his life — combined with flashbacks to the actual lessons his father provided — Ron explores ways to sell better, get more promotions, negotiate more effectively, and have the courage and strength to be who you are. All the while, the book focuses on the ethical way to succeed.
The book is divided into three sections: how to succeeding at work, learning valuable negotiation skills, and important life lessons that will help make you be a better person, spouse or parent.
This quick, enjoyable read has won praise from business leaders, critics, business school professors and every day people. Along the way, you will also explore funny and insightful stories from Ron’s life growing up as a Cuban immigrant, and his path to heading off to college at 16, becoming editor of his college paper by 18, being elected student body senate president, and then starting his first company out of college at just 20 years of age. Ron also explains how he implemented his father’s advice as he went on to start multiple successful companies.

Summer Swimming Pool Advise From The US Consumer Product Safety Commission Jul 19, 2020
    Show notes

CPSC’s Pool Safely Campaign Leader, Nikki Fleming talks with Mark Alyn providing tips for swimming at home, especially since due to ongoing public health concerns about the coronavirus, summer swim season will likely look a bit different this year. Fleming shares, “Hundreds of children die each year in pools and spas. We need to do more because drowning is still the leading cause of unintentional death among children ages 1-4, and the second leading cause of death for children ages 5-14. Of additional importance is the fact that minority communities continue to face unique water safety challenges with 64 percent of African-American children and 45 percent of Hispanic children possessing poor swimming ability, compared to 40 percent of Caucasian children. This puts minority children at greater risk of drowning.”

A Look At Social Anxiety Disorder With Mark A. Smith, MD, Ph.D Jul 17, 2020
    Show notes

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) affects as many as 20 million Americans and is the second most commonly diagnosed anxiety disorder.1,2 A person with SAD feels symptoms of extreme anxiety or fear in certain social situations, such as meeting new people, dating, being on a job interview, answering a question in class, or making small talk to a cashier in a store or a networking event at work. Doing everyday things in front of people - such as eating or drinking in front of others or using a public restroom - also causes anxiety or fear. The person is afraid that he or she will be humiliated, judged, and rejected. SAD can significantly compromise academic, social and work life and can predispose individuals to other anxiety disorders, depression and substance use disorders.3
SAD usually starts during youth. Without treatment, social anxiety disorder can last for many years or a lifetime and prevent a person from reaching his or her full potential.
VistaGen Chief Medical Officer Dr. Mark A. Smith visits with Mark Alyn to discuss a new medication for SAD.
