Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

    Latest Episodes:
MLB All-Star Game, British Open Ratings + George Ofman "Encore Week" Coming | Sports Media Watch Podcast Jul 20, 2022
    Show notes

It's a brand new episode of the show with everything from baseball's "mid-Summer classic" to the audience for golf's latest major and more on the "SportsMediaWatch.com Podcast."
Host T.J. Rives returns with Jon Lewis (aka "Paulsen") of SportsMediaWatch.com to discuss the latest topics, ratings and have a special guest on this week, too.
First, the guys go over the MLB All-Star Week in L.A. with the Home Run Derby from Monday. Did they watch? Has it run it's course? Then, what about the game and it's broadcast on Tuesday night from Dodger Stadium? How did Joe Davis do in his time in the All Star booth on Fox with veteran analyst/former World Champion pitcher John Smoltz? The boys also have thoughts on whether the All Star game should be modified like MLB is already doing with other aspects of their regular season games, too?
Next, there's discussion on the British Open concluding with a Sunday win by Australia's Cam Smith. Smith outdueled fan favorite Rory McIlroy of Ireland down the stretch to capture the "Claret Jug" and golf's final major championship of the '22 season? How were their ratings and how does the audience compare to what else was on t.v. this weekend, including at night, etc.?
Next, T.J. brings George Ofman aboard from the "Tell Me A Story I Don't Know" podcast series on this feed. That show is going to have a special "Encore Week" next week (7/25-29) that will feature Bob Costas, Sarah Kustok, Mike Greenberg, Eddie Olczyk and Mike Wilbon as individual guest conversations each day. George has great insight into these shows and why he picked those guests as the best to be part of his catalog of over 50 interviews so far of the series?
Finally, T.J. and Jon play some "Love it or Leave it?" with a couple of subjects, including the MLB All Star uniforms, college football conference media days coverage and why is the NBA being heavy handed with youtube broadcasts of their old games? Jon is definitely NOT a fan of that!
Hear it all on the latest "SportsMediaWatch.com Podcast" and make sure to follow/subscribe to this feed of shows on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google, etc.!!

Wimbledon Concludes, NFL Sunday Ticket, British Open & more! | Sports Media Watch Podcast Jul 13, 2022
    Show notes

On our latest edition of the show, host T.J. Rives and Jon Lewis of SportsMediaWatch.com return to go over the latest in Sports Media news and ratings, etc.
First, the guys talk the conclusion of the Wimbledon Tennis championships. Did the controversy with Australia's Nick Kyrgios's behavior/foul language fuel some better numbers in the men's final for ESPN? Or is the total lack of American presence in the men's and women's semis or championships always a recipe for bad audience?
Next, where will the NFL's "Sunday Ticket" pay per view of all their games end up airing this Fall? Jon has some insight and the discussion centers on whether streaming, the NFL Redzone and social media with highlights have greatly diminished the importance of Sunday Ticket.
Then, the guys discuss the ratings for events like the WNBA basketball all-star game and the NHL draft and what the numbers mean or not for those?
Finally, some "love it or leave it?" includes talking Tiger Woods and the British Open on NBC this weekend, remembering Miami sports radio legend and former ESPN gambling/information personality Hank "The Hammer" Goldberg and more.

Full Ep: Wayne Randazzo New York Mets Broadcaster | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Jul 12, 2022
    Show notes

New York pizza versus Chicago pizza. How does the radio voice of the New York Mets and a Chicago native tackle that rather saucy question? “I think the Chicago style tavern pizza is the best. When you grow up with one it’s hard to choose the other.” At least he didn’t say deep dish!
But, Mets fans likely won’t hold Wayne Randazzo’s food tastes against him. They’ve quickly warmed up to the 34 year old announcer who’s paired with long time veteran Howie Rose on radio and credits yet another veteran in the TV booth, Gary Cohen, for his continued maturation in the business.
Find out more on Randazzo's impressive rise from local Chicago sports radio and doing lower minor league baseball for the Kane County Cougars, as recently as eight years ago to now being in an MLB booth.
Wayne's in the big leagues and ready to describe himself and how he got there so speedily.
