Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

"Field Of Dreams" Ratings Mess, NFL Preseason & NBC New Notre Dame Crew | Sports Media Watch Podcast Aug 17, 2022
    Show notes

On the latest edition of the show, host T.J. Rives and Jon Lewis of SportsMediaWatch.com return to go over all the latest news, ratings, moves and more!
First, the guys discuss the expected ratings drop for Fox MLB coverage of the second "Field of Dreams" game in the Iowa cornfield late last week? You can't say Jon didn't warn you that he knew the audience would be a lot less and the guys go over the reasons why. And, more importantly, why Fox Sports realizes too that the novelty of it is gone and won't do a game next year.
They also talk the beginning of the NFL preseason and some of the national broadcasts that will begin happening this week and weekend from Fox and ESPN's coverage of pro football.
Next, while the Big Ten sorts out it's new agreements with Fox, CBS and NBC, the Peacock network has named Jac Collinsworth (son of Cris) and former Cowboys coach Jason Garrett as their Notre Dame home game broadcasters. Jon has thoughts on nepotism opening doors not just in this case but others.
Then, it's some NBA schedule talk for the upcoming '22-23 season and in particular the league's decision to have a full slate of games on Christmas despite the NFL also playing three games on that Sunday.
Finally, It's "Love it or Leave it?" time again from subjects like the WNBA playoffs, Fantasy Football and yes....Jon's washer and dryer delivery too!
Hear it all on the "SportsMediaWatch.com Podcast" and make sure to follow/subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google, etc.!!

Best Of Season Five | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Aug 16, 2022
    Show notes

How do you narrow down the best of a season? It’s all but impossible but we managed to come up with some intriguing, delightful and difficult stories from 6 of our guests. It’s been a very trying time for Thom Brenneman, fired 2 years ago by the Cincinnati Reds and Fox sports after uttering a gay slur on a live mike during a commercial break. No one has hired him since despite several notable individuals coming to his defense including Bob Costas. But Brenneman continues to hope.
Dave Wills was hoping to get a full time play by play job in Major League Baseball and at the age of 40, he did! So he packed up his things and told his wife, who had just settled into their new dream home in the Chicago suburbs, “We’re moving to Tampa” where’s he been the radio voice of the Ray for 18 seasons.
Imagine being having a foot too large for a skate. Then imagine Bill Wennington was 6 feet 9 at the age of 14! This native of Montreal and three time champion with the Chicago Bulls had to stop playing the game he loved, hockey, because well, his foot was too big. Turned out size really mattered for the Bulls current radio analyst.
Bob Nightengale believes baseball will add a pitch clock to speed up the game and bigger bases so there are more stolen bases. The long time baseball writer for USA Today doesn’t envision electronic balls and strikes calls, at least not for the next few years.
Corey McPherrin was supposed to cover the 1989 World Series in San Francisco. Instead he wound up covering the big earth quake. But what made that event so satisfying for the one time sportscaster now newscaster was the compliment he got from one of the premier network news anchors of the time.
He has sung the national anthem at many Chicago sporting events. Wayne Messmer has been doing it for over 35 years. But he did it on a national stage and during a war, no less. His rendition of the anthem during the 1991 NHL Allstar game might be one of the most dramatic and memorable in the country’s history!

How do you narrow down the best of a season? It’s all but impossible but we managed to come up with some intriguing, delightful and difficult stories from 6 of our guests. Big Ten Media Deal Nearing, Nick Faldo Retires from CBS & "Field Of Dreams" MLB Game Returns | Sports Media Watch Podcast Aug 10, 2022
    Show notes

It's our latest edition of the show and we're ready to figure out the Big Ten's massive TV negotiations and whom it includes and whom it doesn't? Plus, we have more on Fox setting it's NFL broadcasting lineups, Nick Faldo retiring and more on the latest "SportsMediaWatch.com Podcast."
Host T.J. Rives returns with Jon Lewis (aka "Paulsen") of SportsMediaWatch.com to go over those topics and more.
They discuss the Big Ten apparently ending conversations with ESPN and will instead likely add CBS and NBC to it's network lineup with Fox Sports. Will this also signal that the conference will expand with Notre Dame and perhaps some more Pac 12 teams to join USC and UCLA? Jon has thoughts on it all.
The guys have thoughts on Fox announcing Joe Davis to join Moose Johnston on their #2 NFL team and what are the other announcing lineups?
After 16 years as the lead analyst on CBS Golf, Hall of Fame major champ Nick Faldo is retiring from regular broadcasting. He was a crying mess leaving the air Sunday and we have takes on what CBS does next.
Plus some "Love it or Leave it" on NFL preseason, the Fox "Field of Dreams" game returns with two bad teams this year and Jon gives love to the "Dan Patrick Show," as well.
It's all part of the "SportsMediaWatch.com" podcast and make sure to follow/subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google, etc.!!

Wayne Larrivee Green Bay Packers Broadcaster Part II | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Aug 09, 2022

He was infatuated with Marv Albert. What young aspiring broadcaster back in the early 70s wouldn’t be. But while Wayne Larrivee admitted he wanted to be an NBA radio guy ( and he was for 17 years with the Chicago Bulls), he’s best known as the voice of the Green Bay Packers and is now in his 24 season. This after Larrivee also spent 14 years as the voice of the Bears, two of the charter and most hated rivals in the NFL.
But Larrivee does have interests outside broadcasting most notably, skiing, a sport he’s very proficient at. As for how long Larrivee wants to continue his current job he said, “This year and then we’ll see what happens after that.”
An amazing career that has had him calling games for Michael Jordan, Walter Payton, Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, too. Hear more in the second part of our conversation.
