Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

    Full Ep: Corey McPherrin Fox 32 Chicago News/Sports | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Jul 06, 2022
    Show notes

Not many have done what Corey McPherrin has: make the switch from sportscaster to newscaster. Think Brent Musburger and Keith Olbermann for two. McPherrin has done it seamlessly now for a dozen years at Fox 32 in Chicago
A native of the Chicago suburbs, McPherrin paid his dues from Davenport, New Orleans to Denver, Atlanta and New York where, on assignment in San Francisco during the 1989 World Series, worked tirelessly for the ABC network on the devastating earthquake that rocked the Bay Area. McPherrin also covered two Olympic games
But McPherrin would return to his home town, first at the CBS affiliate and then the Fox station where he established himself as a formidable and popular sportscaster before making the switch to news. Some 27 years later, McPherrin says he’s not close to being done. Good for him and good for his legion of admirers.

UCLA/USC Bolt For Big Ten, KD Demands Trade, LIV Golf, Wimbledon & more! | Sports Media Watch Podcast Jul 05, 2022
    Show notes

On a post July 4th edition of the show, T.J and Jon are back to go over the latest in Sports Media and more on the "SportsMediaWatch.com Podcast"
First, the guys are mindful of the latest horrific mass shooting at the 4th of July Parade in Highland Park, IL and whether we are facing the grim reality that these insane acts will find their way into sports stadiums and arenas, again, soon.
Then, the bring the conversation back to sports and the departures of UCLA and USC from their only home, the now Pac-12 conference, to the ever growing Big Ten. What will it mean to the western schools left behind? Where does the conference expansion by the Big Ten and the SEC end? Are we headed to two 24 team conferences? T.J. and Jon have takes.
Next, the discussion turns to Kevin Durant wanting to be traded from Brooklyn, despite having four years remaining on his deal. What about "player autonomy" which seems to run far too rampant in pro basketball?
Then, there's discussion on the breakaway LIV Golf Tour and how it's Portland debut event in the USA created more buzz this past week. What about the arguments of players getting guaranteed money and being able to more freely pick their schedules?
Finally, it's some "Love it or Leave it?" that includes Wimbledon Tennis, NASCAR road courses and more!

    Show notes

It's a brand new edition of the show, as host T.J. Rives returns with Jon Lewis of SportsMediaWatch.com to discuss the latest in sports media news ratings and opinions.
First, the guys discuss the end of the NHL season with Colorado defeating the two time Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning in game 6. How do the final ratings on ABC compare to previous years? Also, how much will the audience build or not with the Finals not being on network TV next year and every other year in the current deal?
Jon has thoughts next on CBS' Jamie Erdahl reportedly being tabbed to replace Kay Adams on the weekday "Good Morning Football" show on the NFL Network. And, T.J. wonders why the Network's Rachel Bonetta or Coleen Wolfe didn't get the full time shot?
Then, it's some "Love it or Leave it?" This time with subjects from the LIV Golf series coming to the U.S. an debuting in Portland, Oregon this weekend. The College World Series wrapping up in Omaha, NE. And, what about some good desserts on the dinner table, as well?

    Show notes

How’s this for a claim to fame: John Rooney is the only local broadcaster to be behind the mic for back to back World Series titles and for different teams in different leagues! He was there when the Chicago White Sox won it all in 2005 and with the St. Louis Cardinals the following season. But that’s just part of what has been a rewarding 50 plus year career for the native of Richmond, Missouri who has called 19 Final Four college basketball games among his many achievements.
His easy listening voice has hit many exciting pitches whether calling baseball, basketball or football. Not sure what his tone was when he was calling radio bingo! That’s right, radio bingo!
John juggled two stints in the 1980's as a sports reporter for KMOX around his baseball broadcasting and serving as the voice of Missouri Tigers football and basketball on radio and TV for 20 seasons. Rooney was the voice of the White Sox from 1988-2005 and 2022 is now his 35th consecutive as an MLB play by play man for a local team.
Rooney's National Assignments over the years include the MLB Division Series, League Championship Series and World Series, Saturday Afternoon and Sunday Night Baseball for CBS Radio, the Fox TV Saturday Baseball Game of The Week and ESPN Radio Saturday and Sunday night baseball assignments. Rooney has also previously worked 20 MLB All Star Games on National Radio.
He’s been sportscaster of the year in both Illinois and Missouri and is a member of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. Now in his late 60s, Rooney has no plans to retire as works his 17th season with the Cardinals.
