Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

Darren Pang Former NHL Player Turned Top Level Hockey Analyst | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Mar 07, 2023
    Show notes

The shortest goaltender in NHL history was nicknamed “Shrimp.” The second smallest happened to be Darren Pang, now an excellent inside the glass analyst for both TNT and the St.Louis Blues Pang played only 2 seasons in the NHL, both with the Chicago Blackhawks and in his first one, finished second in rookie of the year voting! While his career was so short, Pang’s leap into the world of broadcasting has had a large impact. His insight enhances the broadcasts along with his sense of humor. And he certainly knows about goaltending.
But Pang also has a keen understating of trades and with the NHL trade deadline passing last Friday, he offered his views on a Blackhawks icon wearing a new original six jersey. Patrick Kane was sent to the New York Rangers giving them an even more dynamic offense. Pang wondered whether Kane had something left having had to play for a team rebuilding and trying to end up with the worst record in the league in order to have a better chance at getting Connor Bedard, a generational type of talent. Pang said after Kane scored 5 goals in two games, wow! But now Kane has to prove himself again, something Pang doesn’t have to do.

Bryan Curtis Of The Ringer On NBA All Star Game Future, LIV Golf Ignored + ACC Media Rights Squabble And More! | Last Word On Sports Media P Mar 01, 2023
    Show notes

It's the first show of March, as host T.J. Rives returns to over some of the latest news in sports media and get great insight from guest, Bryan Curtis of The Ringer on the "Last Word On Sports Media" podcast! The guys go over the alarming lack of audience for the recent NBA All-Star game and whether it's headed for the same fate as the NFL's Pro Bowl of no longer being a game? Also, what about the upcoming media rights battle between Warner/Discovery (Turner Sports) ESPN, NBC and maybe other suitors? The guys also discuss the dismal opening ratings for the rogue LIV Golf Series on the CW Network, where the audience was slightly more than bad re-runs of 70s sitcoms. Is there hope that with the stars like Dustin Johnson, Cam Smith, Brooks Koepka and an aging Phil Mickelson that it will do any better?Next, is the topic of college football conference expansion and musical chairs and are Florida State and Clemson disgruntled enough to cause the ACC and ESPN trouble or not? Or are their exit penalty fees simply too great for it to matter?T.J. concludes the episode with some "Love it or Leave it?" on the NBA ratings, the dismal XFL numbers (in their third attempt to play Spring football) and more. It's all part of the "Last Word On Sports Media" podcast and make sure to follow/subscribe to our channel on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google, etc.!!

Cubs World Series Winning Manager Joe Maddon | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Feb 28, 2023
    Show notes

Where have you gone Joe….not DiMaggio but Maddon? Sacked as manager of the Angels last year, Maddon would like to manage again but a recent book critical of how upper management siphons decisions from managers may hinder him. “The Book of Joe” is selling well but didn’t earn the 69 year Maddon a job this year. He still wants to manage and even join a front office but also wants to make sure it’s the right team that agrees with his philosophies.
Maddon guided the Tampa Rays to the World Series in 1998 but did one better taking the Chicago Cubs all the way. It was their first World Series title in 108 years. That earned him a unique place in history but 3 seasons later he was let go by Theo Epstien and that was a shock to Maddon who had great success during his 5 year tenure.
Meanwhile, Maddon took up golf and claimed to play almost every day last summer though he would rather be managing this spring, summer and fall.
