Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

Longtime Chicago Sportscaster Turned News Anchor Ryan Baker Tease | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Apr 10, 2023
    Show notes

How would you like a job where you might not go to bed until 2am and then suddenly switch to one where you get up at the same time? Ryan Baker mad such a move in 2019 when the CBS affiliate wanted him to leave his job as its main sportscaster to become a morning news host. Baker accepted just the way his long time competitor and friend Corey McPherrin did at FOX 32 several years earlier. It may be a different genre but Baker claimed his basics of his job really didn’t change. He’s a story teller and he told plenty here including how his alma mater, the University of Illinois, exited the NCAA Basketball tournament early for a third straight year. Baker was once its basketball manager. He also rails against the transfer portal which robs schools of talent leaving leaving college basketball to look more like a pro league with free agency.Catch more of Ryan's story/rise to Chicago television news stardom on coming Tuesday!

It's the culmination of the craziest NCAA Tournament maybe ever, as the Final Four will play out this weekend with San Diego State battling Florida Atlantic and UConn taking on Miami in Houston for a shot at winning it all. And, host T.J. Rives is ready to discuss that with guests and more on the latest "Last Word on Sports Media Podcast!"First, before the college hoops, it's a conversation on the mounting mess involving the bankruptcy of Diamond Sports and it's deal with Bally Sports and many MLB teams who are due rights fee money for the 2023 season. Kurt Badenhausen of Sportico.com joins him to give insight into what the Bally's bankruptcy proceeding means for teams like the San Diego Padres, Cincinnati Reds, Atlanta Braves and Tampa Bay Rays, etc.?Kurt has been covering the story for months and relays what challenges baseball has in dealing with Diamond Sports/Ballys and the individual team deals. Jason Benetti Of Fox Sports And Chicago White Sox TV | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Mar 28, 2023
    Show notes

He’s everywhere! Turn on a game on TV or tune in one on radio and you’re bound to hear Jason Benetti. His career has skyrocketed and with good reason: he’s very good at what he does but when I mentioned that to him he said the reason is the radio department at Homewood Flossmoor High School in suburban Chicago and the radio station at Syracuse University.
“I was a good student in grammar school, probably too polite at times. There was really no edge except I would go home and my parents and I would watch Robin Williams and George Carlin and Dennis Miller and Dennis Leary. I always appreciated really good comedians.”
The voice of the team he grew up loving, the White Sox, Benetti also works for Fox sports calling major league baseball, college basketball and so much more.
In part one of this thoroughly enjoyable podcast, Benetti touches many bases including his comedic side ( he grew up loving Robin Williams, George Carlin and Saturday Night Live among others, his law degree and expresses his great respect for analysts Steve Stone and Bill Walton.
in part two Benetti gets deep into his difficult childhood and dealing with Cerebral Palsy.
