Overrated & Underrated College Teams this Season Aug 09, 2023

Show notes

College football's 2023 preseason coaches poll top 25 rankings are out. Some programs might demand a re-count after a lower ranking than they deserved. Several teams hold the underrated or overrated labels for various reasons after the debut edition of the poll.

Preseason polls don't amount to much, as evidenced last season when unranked TCU reached the College Football Playoff. However, perception does matter early and can establish confidence heading into the new campaign.

Ranking teams this time of year has everything to do with returning talent, coaching prestige and just how much intel coaches have about opposing teams. We've often seen participating coaches rank their own teams higher than others almost to a fault, which can skew results a bit.

Here are the most underrated and overrated teams in the preseason coaches poll and why they fall in either category.

How Don Coryell changed the passing game forever Aug 07, 2023

Show notes

Don Coryell changed the way offenses were played and is one of the 5 most innovative coaches in the history of Pro Football. His induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame is long overdue and took place this weekend. What he did at San Diego State and then with the Cardinals was change the way football was played. The man who helped develop the power-I for John McKay as an assistant at Southern Cal ditched the game’s conservative 3-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust approach and dragged the rest of the football world kicking and screaming into a new era where the pass became the thing. Most known for his Air Coryell offenses in San Diego, his legacy goes way back before that. We take you behind the scenes into one of the greatest minds in Pro Football History.

The Top Offensive Lines in the NFL Aug 05, 2023

Show notes

I broke down all 32 offensive lines into five different categories to give you a better sense of where each team stacks up. Tiers are always better in terms of analysis than straight rankings.

Individual talent of the starting five is a critical factor, but continuity, chemistry and depth were heavily weighed. Every evaluator has an inherent bias, and mine is towards offensive linemen who play with a nasty edge, constantly trying to finish plays and physically punish the defense. I genuinely believe that impacts the rest of the offense and the entire team.

There are so many factors involved, including play caller, offensive scheme and quarterback. Things can and often do change upfront during a season. Some players get better, some players get worse, and unfortunately, many players get injured. Let’s dive into the rankings.
