Best Deep Ball Throwers in the NFL Jul 21, 2023

Show notes

Typically, a pass is considered “deep” if it travels 20-plus yards downfield. That’s important because it means we’re not just talking about high-lofting downfield bombs. We’re also talking about balls that target deeper dig, corner and even comeback routes. Those throws predominantly occur near or outside the numbers, making the “20-yard throw” more like 25-35 air yards. So yes, quarterback’s arm strength matters. Often, it matters a lot. Remember: In the NFL, arm strength is not so much about how far you throw the ball but how fast. And, indirectly, how precisely, sincean accurate ball travels more efficiently than an inaccurate ball. Can you win with a quarterback who is not a premier downfield thrower? Of course. But is it easier to win with one who is? Also, of course.

Best Route Runners in the NFL Jul 20, 2023

Show notes

. Route running means too many different things to different people. Routes are run in various systems out of various formations and against various defensive looks. It can be hard to tell when they’re run poorly. A receiver might make a beautiful cut at 12 yards, but the pass to him gets intercepted because he was supposed to cut at 14 yards. Or because the route runner next to him was supposed to release outside of the hook defender, not inside.

Some of the best work is performed by untargeted receivers. Most NFL offenses deploy route combinations. Receiver A runs a brilliant route to create a targeted pass for Receiver B. How often are outsiders crediting Receiver A in that scenario?

Advanced metrics have done a lot for football, but it’s difficult to get on board with them regarding route running. The differences in zone and man coverage rules alone render the stat null. Separation is not an end-all; some route runners are superb because they know how to get closer to defenders in certain areas.

With all that said , he is a look at some of the best route runners in the NFL from a Trained eye perspective of a veteran NFL Scout of over 30 years.

How Pre-Season Practices have changed to adapt to modern NFL Jul 19, 2023

Show notes

There was a time when NFL Training Camps were exactly that---camps to get players who had offseason jobs with no offseason conditioning ready for the NFL Season. Teams would open camp just after the 4th of July and there were 6 Pre-Season Games to help prepare them for the season.

Times have changed drastically as players make large sums of money and can focus solely on their jobs playing football all year round, thus various Mini-Camps and Teaching Sessions.

The purpose of the preseason should be twofold. First, to prepare the team to win right away in the regular season. Second, to find football players who could help our team from among the cadre of newcomers.

Chris explains how this has all evolved and why the modern day approach has adjusted to the modern game of Pro Football and it's schedule.

Here’s a brief look at each set of negotiations, with insight into the inner workings of the NFL contract talks that take place between executives, agents and players.

Show notes

The most compelling part of training camp is observing the intense competition for open starting positions and key backup spots in camp practices, joint scrimmages with other teams and preseason games. NFL personnel members, coaches and players are returning from vacation and preparing to go back to their respective facilities with training camp around the corner. The past few weeks were the quietest part of the NFL offseason, but the pace is about to pick up.

There are a few remaining unresolved situations that we have monitored for several weeks and in some cases, months. There should be answers to most of these fairly soon.

Here are the offseason dominoes we’re waiting to see fall.

How to Expect the Unexpected when running a Football Operation Jul 15, 2023

Show notes

Constant change in the NFL and major college football is a given. In that regard, it can be anticipated. Coaches and general managers are always being replaced. Free agency and the draft in the NFL always create roster turnover, just as the transfer portal does in the college game. Some changes, however, aren’t planned. We go through how as Coaches and Executives, we handle such issues when they arise.

The Best Long Term Fits for the Northwestern HC Job Jul 14, 2023

Show notes

I have said multiple times that Pat Fitzgerald is among those with the most job security in College Football. That just makes the culture of hazing within the program all the more ridiculous, preventable, and harmful to those involved. Now that Fitzgerald has been fired, the Wildcats will ideally find somebody with direct ties to the school, but at least somebody with experience at another prestigious academic university. Experience coaching in the Midwest will also be a big positive. We do not know yet who the interim will be this fall, but it’s never too early to look at candidates who might be the full-time coach in 2024.
