044 How to Create a 'Best Of' Podcast Nov 28, 2017
    Show notes

Do you have any 'best of' albums? They're great, right? So, why not give your listeners nothing but the hits by creating a 'Best Of' episode?

A 'best of' episode is pretty self explanatory - you take the most impactful or magical moments of your podcast and slap them together for a show chock full of the good stuff. There are a few really good reasons to do this and you can get surprising results - if you do it right. In this episode I reveal why you should do one and how to pull it off.

I might be dating myself here but I used to love buying 'best of albums' from my favourite musicians or bands. I got the cream of the crop all in one shiny disc. Even if I had all of the other albums - I still loved having the best of the best all in one place. It was smart for the artist too because they were either selling the same song twice to fans or giving potential new fans a way to fall in love with them.

It's the same with podcasts. You take the best parts of past episodes and stitch them to make a new episode. And, as we head into the holidays and the new year, now is the perfect time to do it. Especially if you want to take some time off over the holidays or you're having trouble convincing guests to give you time right now. This is a trick we used to use all the time around the holidays. It was something we could produce ahead of time so we could take time off without leaving our listeners without content (looking for a replacement!). And, want to know a secret? The audience loves it. They love reliving their favourite moments or hearing something GOLD that they may have missed. Plus, new listeners get to sample only the good stuff - like filling your plate with meat and dessert and never having to even pretend to consider those stupid Brussel sprouts.

But, beware! You can get this wrong. If you don't pick the right stuff, fail to string it together cohesively or you do it too often, the result could be the opposite from what you intend - your listener might feel like you're being lazy or taking them for granted.

In this episode, I go over when you should be putting out a best of episode and how often. Also, how to pick the material to use by using different approaches. I'll also give you a handy way to move forward so your next best of show produces itself.

I've put together these tips for you so that you can pull this off the right way and reap all of the benefits of a good 'best of' show. It's my little gift to you - a perfectly produced best of show that warms the heart of your audience, attracts new listeners and gives you a much deserved break.

Here's the best of my advice - go listen to it now.

043 Why You Need to Designate a Podcast Bus Driver Nov 14, 2017
    Show notes

Imagine a car with two steering wheels and two sets of pedals. Wouldn't that be fun?

The answer is no. You'd be dead.

If you host a podcast with more than one person or you have guests on your show then your podcast is in danger of being out of control. You need a Captain Kirk.

In this episode I explain why it's important to have a designated show driver, what they should be doing and how to decide who it should be (without egos getting in the way). And, if you're flying solo but you have guests - you need to pay attention too because if you don't you might just look up and discover your guest has taken the wheel. Gasp. Oh, no! Ahh!

CAUTION: This episode is only for those with PODCAST GOALS. If you have a podcast just for fun for you and your friends and your mom...please stop reading this, it's not for you. Go on, have some fun - I'll see you next time.

But if your podcast has a purpose - if you have ambitions for your show then listen up. You need a podcast driver! And, you need to figure this out fast or else *spoiler alert* you're headed for a fiery crash.

In sports, you have a play-by-play announcer and a colour commentator. Your favourite radio morning duo has a driver and passenger. On a plane, there's a pilot and co-pilot. Knowing your role is crucial. Don't get me wrong. Every role is just as important as the others but one person has to take the reins and drive your podcast bus down that highway to listener bliss.

In this episode, I'm going to help you figure out what your role is and how to embrace it. In life, there are drivers and there are passengers - who's to say who's got the better view?

042 Getting the Most From Your Podcast Mic Oct 30, 2017
    Show notes

So, you didn't spend $500 on a microphone when you started your podcast. That's okay. Neither did I.

There are a million things I'd rather spend my money on. Let me name a few. Beer, whisky, tequila, ribs, Saskatchewan Roughrider memorabilia and traveling around the world.

But, that doesn't mean you don't have to worry about how your mic sounds because, ahem, YOUR PODCAST AUDIO QUALITY MATTERS!

I don't care what others tell you (or you tell yourself to feel better). If your podcast sounds like you're broadcasting out of a tin can… I'm not listening! And, I know a lot of others who won't give you the time a day. It's like watching a TV show that keeps crapping out on you or streaming video that freezes all the time. I'm out! There are too many other options out there with great content that don't hurt my ears or distract me with bush-league sound.

So, what do you do? How can you have the best of both worlds - save money on your mic AND sound good?

In this episode, I'm going to help you get the most out of the mic you already have (assuming it's not some toy mic). I've got three mic technique hacks that will have you sounding like you've got a booming pro-mic.

Remember, it's not the equipment - it's how you use it. So, listen up and learn a few ways to make that puny mic of yours sound like a monster.

    041 Maximum Listener Engagement Oct 15, 2017
    Show notes

    I just got engaged.

No silly...to my podcast listener. I've been married for years to the most wonderful woman in the world. She's the best thing that ever happened to me. She's smart, she's beautiful...and oh yeah, she sometimes helps me edit my podcast show notes. BUSTED!!!! Let's see if she keep this in...but I guess you'll never know.

HAH! Look at that. She did. She's the best!

Back to my podcast listener. When it comes to engaging him or her. We're not talking about a life long commitment here. We're talking about a connection. Let's go as far as bond.

I think real engagement with your podcast listener happens when you share something. Particularly a moment during your podcast. And, more particularly a moment when you find something in common.

You probably already know how to engage your listener because you've probably experienced it yourself AS a listener. Have you ever felt like a podcaster was talking right to you? Or, maybe it was another medium like a book, TV show or even in real life with a friend or a dynamic public speaker. You had a moment and it likely created a memory or even made you take action.

These moments can be really powerful. These are the moments you need to create if you want your listener to take action - like subscribe, connect with you directly or become a client. But, not enough podcasters are engaging with their listeners on the right level.

In this episode, I share the 3 levels of engagement when it comes to podcasting. These levels start with the easiest engagement and, when executed well, lead to popping the big question: Will you be my client/buy my stuff/sign up for my thing? I explain it all in this episode, including how to reach maximum engagement, what it means and why you should care about it.

So grease up your ring finger. It's time to get hitched...on a new way of engaging your listener.

[editor's note: Apparently flattery and sentimentality are also ways to get what you want. Sorry you had to see that.]

040 How to Properly Introduce Your Podcast Guest Oct 03, 2017
    Show notes

Don't you hate it when someone get's your name wrong?

Introductions can ruin a first impression not only for the introducer but also for the introducee. And when you're hosting a podcast, introducing your guest wrong doesn't look good on you and it certainly isn't going to set you up to knock the interview out of the park.

But getting your guest's name right is only one teensy tiny part of having a killer guest intro.

I promised to do this episode back at Episode 19...one of my most listened to episodes so I thought I'd better get at it. What? I'm only 20 episodes late. Jeeeesh.

You've waited long enough and now here are the goods. In this episode, I share the formula for a perfect guest intro. *Spoiler* It ain't long.

It may not seem like rocket science - and it's not - but introducing your guest can go horribly wrong if you don't put any effort into it. A lot of podcasters put time and effort into the body of their episode and never think about getting out of the gate cleanly.

As part of my oreo cookie analogy of scripting your podcast (Episode 010), your guest is part of the hard crunchy cookie part. Make it solid. Script this bitch so you get it right. Get in, out and on with the show.

In radio, usually because we are limited by the clock, a guest introduction is done in one sentence. You can spend a little more time on it in your podcast but that's where so many go wrong.

In this episode, I reveal a number of mistakes that podcasters make so you can avoid them. And not just so you don't embarrass yourself in front of your guest (or make them question why they agreed to be on this clown-show) but because your listener deserves better. Yep, it always comes back to your listener.

No matter the format for your show, use these tips and my formula for a perfect guest intro and you'll be sounding more like a pro, in 3 sentences or less.

039 Get Out! How to End Your Podcast Right Sep 17, 2017
    Show notes

    Awkward good-byes are the worst.

Am I going in for a hug? How about a kiss? Or my fist-bump hits your high-five and suddenly you're gear-shifting me like you're driving a big rig.

Don't let your goodbyes be awkward especially when it comes to your podcast. Finish the listener experience by holding their hand right to the end. Okay...maybe that's too much touching already.

Before you say goodbye, tell your listener what you want them to do next.

You just finished giving them a whack of information, perhaps some new tools or resources to use, maybe you inspired them like no other or fired them up to reach their goals. Don't just say good-bye; give them the next step. Finish the conversation without leaving them hanging or worse, moving on to the next podcaster (who's actually willing to take better care of them).

This is your Call to Action (aka CTA).

I know, I know - for many podcasters this IS what makes the goodbye awkward but it shouldn't! You just have to change the way you think about this 'ask'.

In this episode, I'll tell you the importance of this critical element - especially if your podcast goal is to convert your listener into customers. If you're using your podcast as a marketing tool for your business, you need to be doing this every episode - not just because you want sales but because it's part of serving your listener.

I'll also tell you what not to do when it comes to your Call to Action and how to get out of your podcast like a champ, every time. Plus, we'll get over the notion that you're asking for something from your listener. Oh, yeah - prepare for a paradigm shift.

The Call to Action, don't leave home without it...er… don't end your podcast without it.

038 How to Make Your Podcast Convert Better Sep 05, 2017
    Show notes

Podcasters who are trying to build their brand or grow their sales through their podcast can learn a lot from traditional radio.

Radio stations work endlessly to attract listeners. Once they have them, they work tirelessly to keep them and turn them into loyal listeners. They know that once they have their loyalty and trust, they can ask them to do anything - like buy from their sponsors. Sounds like a great place to be right?

But this is one of the most delicate relationships there is because if you piss them off or break that trust, you'll lose them for good.

There are only so many radio stations in one market but when it comes to podcasts, there are likely hundreds that can replace yours. All that work and boom, they're gone.

In this podcast, I deliver a template you can follow to best guide your listener though each episode. The format I share has all the parts you need to deliver a listener experience that will not only make them feel taken care of but will have eager for more. All of these part have a specific role to play in helping turn your listener into a fan or customer depending on your goals.

Now, I sometimes get push back on this 'one size fits all' so as you listen, keep in mind that each part is flexible and you can get creative inside this structure. And, if you're NOT doing your podcast for your listener, then, fill your boots. Throw structure out the window - you're really just doing this for your own satisfaction so get as much as you can.

With these elements in your podcast, executed consistently well, you'll start converting those listeners into fans and then into loyal customers. From your podcast intro to your show extro (or outro); these 9 parts of a podcast will help you feel more confident about reaching your podcasting goals.

I really get into much more detail in my FREE 25-page ENGAGING PODCAST BLUEPRINT.

I'm sure you can handle it. It's got great examples and tips on how NOT to execute certain parts. Grab it now: PodcastPerformanceCoach.com/blueprint

037 Who Are You Talking To? Nov 15, 2016
    Show notes

When you turn on your mic, who do you picture your listening? Who, exactly, are you talking to? If you don't know, chances are your audience isn't as big as it could be.

It's time for you to figure it out - even if you totally make it up. In fact, I encourage you to fabricate your quintessential listener. Lie a listener into existence. I learned this trick in radio. One radio station I worked at created the perfect listener. It was kind of like a Frankenstein experiment - a few traits from people we knew listened, a few from the type of people we wanted to listen, a dash of personality quirk and presto - we made a listener and we called her Jennifer. She was who we talked to every time we turned on the mic. The program manager even found a photo of a woman who looked like the 'Jennifer' we'd created in our mad marketing lab and posted it in the studio. And yes, this is marketing. If you don't know who you're talking to - your ideal listener - then you can't connect with them, you can't give them what they want and you certainly can't attract the right sponsors (you know, the kind who sell exactly what Jennifer wants?) But, let's leave marketing out of this. Let's talk about how it'll help your podcast performance. By creating your own Jennifer (or avatar, as some people call it) you are creating a direct line from your mic to your listener's ears. You can visual how your Jennifer will react to the content. You can ask theoretical questions with your listener in mind and have a better sense of what Jennifer wants from you and your show. I suggested this tactic to one of my clients. He did the work, really got to now his theoretical listener. Gave him a name. He even found a picture and posted it right in his line of sight - just to the right of his mic. It changed everything for him and you could hear the difference. He was able to tap into a more conversational tone, he was clearer about his topics, and as a listener, I felt more connected to him - even though I am nowhere near his ideal listener! So, how is talking to one very specific person going to help you appeal to a lot more listeners? Give me 5 minutes and let me explain.

    036 Embrace Your Pre-Podcast Rituals Nov 08, 2016
    Show notes

Call them superstitions, rituals are or just old habits. When you do the same thing before an event, it become part of that event. And, when you skip it - bad things happen.

No this is not going to be like one of those 'pass this on or something awful will happen to you' type of things. Let's leave those to the internet and our mom's on Facebook. When I say bad things happen - I mean bad podcasting happens. And it has nothing to do with luck or mojo or karma or anything. It's simply this. We are creatures of habit and routine. When the routine changes, we change. Our style shifts a little bit. And, we don't perform with consistency. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm a huge fan of shaking things up a bit. All the more reason to have a pre-record ritual - it just puts you in that place no matter where you are. Rituals help us deliver a consistent performance. Artists do it, athletes do it, heck even politicians do it. I've seen a lot of interesting pre-record rituals in my decades of radio. I can't explain any of them. Very few of them have anything to do with proven performance techniques but they work. And, you can't argue with things that work but it has to work for you. Nobody can tell you what your ritual should be. Whether it's high-fiving the picture of your 'ideal listener, Kevin' or always wearing your lucky podcasting jersey - it's entirely up to you. So, take a look at the habits you already have before you hit record. What makes you feel that 'here we go!' feeling? What gives you that sense of 'this show is going to rock'? It can be practical, superstitious or just straight up bonkers. Whatever that little or big habit is, recognize it and make it your ritual. Mine has to do with a 20-point checklist (steal it here) that makes me feel confident in the technical aspects. Oh, and a certain lack of pants. But, that's just me. Go out and find your own then embrace your pre-podcast rituals and deliver an awesome show, consistently, every time. What is your ritual? What's the one thing you need to do to feel like your podcast recording session is going to kick ass?

    035 What's the Perfect Length for a Podcast? Oct 25, 2016
    Show notes

Every couple of months I see this question pop up in podcaster forums and on podcast Facebook groups - How long should my podcast be? Or, What's the ideal length for a podcast. Then the flurry of opinions fly in.

    30 mins

    60 mins

    10 minutes

    20 minutes

    Never more than 90 minutes

And my personal favourite: 'Whatever you want, man.'

Inevitably, the person asking doesn't get a real answer and they're back to wondering what to do. Or, someone makes a decent enough argument (probably to justify the length of their own podcast) and sways the person their way. As my Baba would say, 'it's all bull hockey!' In this episode of Just the Tip - I'm going to tell you the definitive answer to this question. No bull hockey. And this is whether you're just starting out or if you already have an existing podcast. As you may have noticed, my podcast is 5 minutes (give or take a minute) and that's entirely by design. Don't worry, I'm not going to tell you to cut yours down to 5 minutes too. But, it is a clue to my methods. You see, my podcast was designed to be highly consumable - quick bites (or a significant binge session) because I know that my listener is busy and is already overwhelmed by the advice / easy-to-follow-success-formulas / blathering on of other podcast experts. I'm a get in, give em the goods and tell em to go implement it kind of guy. Why would I want a podcast longer than 5 or 6 minutes? That's just a wee little clue into what you'll discover listening to this episode. So, go ahead Matlock - give me 5 minutes and we'll solve the mystery of the perfect podcast length together.
