    024 - 5 Ways to Generate Podcast Topic Ideas Aug 09, 2016
    Show notes

Whether you're podcasting everyday or once a month, you may find yourself wonder what they heck you're going to talk about next. Don't panic. Even the pros go through this.

What I've learned from some of the best producers in the radio biz is that there's always an idea out there. It might not be a new idea but there's always a way to make it fresh. And, inspiration is out there if you know where to look.

In this episode I give you 5 great ways to pull amazing show topics out of your butt. And, if your butt isn't performing magic, then I tell you a few other places to look - like your old shows, your influencers and social media channels and (prepare for a shocking revelation) the outside world.

What makes coming up with show ideas so challenging is we get into ruts. If we have interview shows, it might be that we get lazy and just book anyone who asks to be on the show or the first one to say yes. It might be that we feel like something worked really well, so we just do more of the same (until we're so sick of the same we're ready to quit!)

Here's the biggest secret. Getting out of our ruts isn't just easy - it's fun. And, your listeners will love you for it.

So, whether you're in a slump now, you've ever been in a slump or you're a human being (we all get into slumps at some point), check out this episode. Make sure to bookmark it for later so you can come back to it when that idea well runs dry.

P.S. You don't even need to be in a slump to get value out of these tips on finding inspiration for amazing show topics. Check out tip #3 which is key to improving your engagement with your audience!

023 Does Your Professional Intro Turn Off Listeners? Aug 02, 2016
    Show notes

One mistake many new podcasters make is that they 1) think they need a professionally produced intro and then 2) create an intro that doesn't match their brand. Talk about a bad start!

Look, I know a produced podcast intro can sound slick and sexy and it makes your podcast feel all shiny and cool. And, when you're starting out it's easy to think that this is a necessary element to a great podcast. You might even have discovered a killer deal in a podcast group. But, let's look beyond the sizzle and see if there's any steak there.

In this episode, I outline exactly what your professionally produced (or not-professionally produced) intro should include. Plus, I'll explain where most people go wrong and how to fix it.

I can't tell you how many of my clients have sent me their podcasts with this one simple mistake right off the top. An intro that is off brand. I suspect that they got it from a company that churns these things out in a cookie cutter fashion - same voice over, same music. The good news is, you can fix it. Yes, I know you paid a lot of money for that intro and yes, I am suggesting you throw it in the trash. But there's one good reason - it's garbage!

If your intro isn't on brand then you are doing a disservice to yourself and your potential fans. I say potential fans because if the intro doesn't speak to them (because it's not on brand) then they may never get past that slick and sexy intro (aka sizzle) to discover the gold you're offering up in the actual podcast (aka the steak). So, yes. Throw it away. Replace it with a self-made intro if you can't afford to go pro again. Doing it yourself the right way is going to win out over an off-brand professional intro every time. Every time!

Not sure if your intro stinks? Listen to this podcast. Find out if you're turning away fans in the first 10 seconds of your podcast and what you can do to fix that. Then go make some sizzle that matches the steak!

Or, send it to me and I'll tell you!

P.S. No, I'm not in the business of making intros so don't ask. And NO, I am not slamming any specific company that makes these intros - it's up to you, the podcaster, to demand the goods not the production company!

022 Stop Answering Your Own Questions Jul 26, 2016
    Show notes

If you have guests on your show - are you stealing their spotlight? Are you treating your show like it's a ventriloquist act where you ask and answer the questions while your willing expert sits mutely by? You might have fallen into the Ask-Answer-Ask trap.

I hear this all the time and (confession) I've done it. This is when you ask a question and then before your guest can answer, you answer it yourself only to realize you need to ask a question to have a conversation with your guest so you ask it again. Wow. That's confusing. And, it's shabby for your guest and your listener.

I give you a few examples in this podcast so you can get a better handle on what this sounds like (and if you are doing it). I also dive into why this happens even to the best hosts (spoiler: it has to do with your ego!)

If you find yourself falling into this trap - it's time to get out. Stop wasting your listeners time by cover the same ground twice. Stop undermining your guest's expertise by scooping them on the answer (that they should be more qualified to give). Stop answering your own questions.

Know your role. Ask the questions. Let your guest answer them. By all means, share your opinion or perspective after that but if you are going to have guests on your show, be polite and allow them to be your guest. They'll thank you and the audience will get a lot more out of listening - which is how they will become stark raving maniac level fans. And, that's what we all want - right?

Go, ahead. You answer that question.

021 Stop Making Your Listener Feel Dumb Jul 19, 2016
    Show notes

Want to know a quick way to lose a lot of listeners? Assume they know what you're talking about. Talk over their heads and they'll be hitting delete lickety split.

In this podcast, I explain a few simple ways that you can avoid making your audience feel dumb. Because, who likes to feel dumb? Look, they already know you know more than them - or at least they hope you do since that's why they are tuning in - but that doesn't mean you have to rub it in their faces. You may not even know you are doing it but they're feeling it.

I'm not saying you have to dumb things down - not at all, what I'm saying is that you have to smartly use the tricks I share in this podcast to help your listener feel taken care of. To make sure that they feel like they are a part of the conversation not someone who woke up from a college bender smackdab in the middle of an astro-physics lecture.

This all comes back to my main message - be listener centric. They are the reason you do this thing so don't make them feel like they are lost in the conversation, bring them along and give them a few hints so they can keep up and learn from you - the rockstar podcaster.

020 Shit In is Shit Out Jul 12, 2016
    Show notes

There is no delicate way to say this. When it comes to recording, shit in, is shit out - if you record your podcast with peaking, hot levels it's going to sound like shit and there is nothing you can do to fix it.

I see this question come up all the time in the podcaster Facebook groups and forums. Podcasters desperately seeking a solution to that buzzing and hard to listen to sound that sounded so nice coming out of their mouth. And every time, they have to face facts. You can't fix it. You can't unmodulate an overmodulated track. Sure, you'll see all kinds of helpful folks suggesting programs that can reduce the it to some extent but it's still going to sound like crap. And that is, say it with me folks, shit in is shit out.

How do you avoid this? Step one don't record crappy audio. And, there you go. That's it. Oh, you want more details. Well I go into greater detail in my podcast, which you should listen to if you haven't already - it's only 5 minutes! But here's another little tip. Use your eyeballs as well as your earballs (you're wearing headphones - right?). Watch your levels. If you see red that means stop! Stop recording and re-adjust. I don't care how uncomfortable it might be or how much of a pain in the ass it is. And if you guest suddenly gets animated and they raise their voice and their levels start peaking all over the place. You must stop and reset your levels or else you WILL record shit. And, what does Coach Tim say? That's right - shit in is shit out. Ain't nobody want to produce (or listen to) shit.

Thanks and yes, I did just put $20 in the swear jar.

019 Tell us About Yourself is NOT a Question Jul 05, 2016
    Show notes

Don't be fooled by the podcast gurus who love to throw this out as a way to start the show. "Tell us about yourself" is not a question and it's definitely no way to start an interview!

Look, I'm not calling anyone out here - unbunch your panties, folks. There are a lot of podcasters who do this. But that doesn't make it right. In fact, it's flat out wrong! I suspect that someone started doing it and then a whole bunch of people decided to copy this bad habit.

Nobody on tv or radio does this except for game show hosts.

I'm not going to hold anything back - if you're doing this, you need to stop being so lazy, you need to start showing your guest some respect and you definitely need to be delivering better content to your listeners!

Uh-oh. Someone's ego is getting bruised. Look, it's nothing personal. It's a common mistake. But, stop now, okay?

If I can't spank you into complying, listen to some logic. Who's show is it - your's or your guest's? Okay, so who's in control when you lob them the "tell us about yourself" softball? They are. They can say whatever they want now. They can start talking about their belief in a trinity of alien goddesses. They might sing a tune. They could share inappropriate stories about their kid's hot teacher. They probably won't but here's the thing - you can't stop them. You left the door wiiiiide open. Why would you do that? Isn't this your show?

Good - so get back to interviewing your guest with proper questions. You know, the kind with a question mark on the end. Doesn't that sound like a better idea?

Still not convinced? This podcast has even more reasons you need to ditch the lazy lob balls and start asking proper questions - just like the pros.

In this episode, I'll explain what your guest extro should sound like and how to pull it off in a win, win, win way.
