053 Warning: You Might be a Lazy Podcaster Apr 17, 2018
    Show notes

Time for a reality check - have you become a lazy podcaster? Are you phoning it in? Are you making bad decisions and blaming it on your busy-ness or (even worse) justifying it under the guise of 'efficiency'.

It happens to the best of us. We get busy, our ambitious podcasting schedule suddenly feels overwhelming and, sometimes, we feel like nobody is actually listening or cares. And then it happens. We get lazy.

You might be shaking your head right now, thinking, 'that ain't me…' Well, this podcast is for you. Take this quiz - answer the 7 questions I have for you in this episode to determine if you're a lazy podcaster or not.

Whether you're starting to slip (making only 1 - 2 of these lazy mistakes) or in a freefall (making 6 - 7 of these mistakes), you need to step it up. Why? Because your audience will notice. And, who are you doing this for if not for your audience.

There's another reason not to get lazy. Producing a good podcast. You want to right? You didn't start out doing this to get worse as time went on, did you? Right, so let's nip these lazy habits in the bud and get back to producing great podcasts that serve your audience (and you can be proud of).

By the way, if you discover that you are a lazy podcasters and you don't know what to do next, there are a couple of ways I can help out.

    1. Take editing off of your list. If the source of your laziness is that you just don't have enough time, let me give you a bit of that back. I have a range of editing packages to choose from.
    2. Get a podcast coach. Sometimes we get lazy because we're a little lost and question if we're going in the right direction. My 30-Days to a Better Podcast will help you figure out what you're doing right and wrong, and how you can fix it. I can even give you some time saving production suggestions to help keep the ball rolling. If we start today, by next month, you'll be a re-energized podcaster with a better show.

Let me know how you did in my Lazy Podcast Quiz. Are you guilty of a just a bit of laziness or are you fully phoning it in? Fess up on my Facebook page.

052 How to Build a Better Relationship with your Listener Apr 03, 2018
    Show notes

Hey you. Yeah, you. I'm talking to you. If you've listened to my podcast before then you know that I'm always talking to you. Just you. Wanna know why?

If you want to build a better relationship with your listener, you need to be talking to them individually. I've talked about this before (give episode 29 a listen) but I'm bringing it back up today for two very good reasons.

One, I was inspired by an interview I heard with a radio industry veteran who was retiring after 50 years on the radio. 50 YEARS! You don't get to be on the radio for 50 years unless you build a relationship with your audience. He mentioned in this interview that he felt a real connection with each and every listener. And, he knows they feel that way too.

His secret? You guessed it - he always talked to just one listener.

In the podcast biz (especially in the podcast for profit biz) we get caught up in a lot of these digital marketing tricks to convert more listeners. This episode is here to remind you that the real 'trick' to converting listeners into customers comes down to good old fashioned customer service - and that means talking to your listener on a personal level.

Think you can do that? I know you can. And, I also know that once you do, you'll see a big improvement in the relationship you have with your audience.

Nothing beats 1:1 connections. That's why my 30 Days to a Better Podcast is just you and me working together to make your podcast awesome.

Connect with me today and in just one month, you'll have a better podcast - guaranteed.

051 Are You Focusing on the Wrong Podcast Stats? Mar 20, 2018
    Show notes

Are you guilty of checking your download stats on the daily just to see how popular you are? Are you obsessed with where iTunes ranks your podcast in your niche category? Confess, have you ever checked more than once a day?

I've got news for you… you might be looking at the wrong numbers!

In this episode, I dive into what those stats should mean to you and how to figure out the right numbers to focus on.

Plus, I explain the two camps of podcasting. Do you know which one you're in? If you don't then you really might be focusing on the wrong podcast stats!

Not only do you need to know your camp, and which numbers to focus on but you also need to know when it's time to move on out of that camp and focus on some new numbers.

Sounds complicated, but it's not. I promise. I make it all perfectly clear in this episode. So, hit play and let's see if you're in the right place and looking at the right stats.

Then, meet me at the campfire for some smores and a sing-a-long. You know this one, right. Kumbaya, Podcaster, Kumbaya…

Speaking of feeling all Kumbaya. I decided to bring back my free 15 minute discovery call. It's as simple as it sounds - you get to pick my brain for 15 minutes or so about what's going on with your podcast. Whether you're just starting out or 50 episodes in, I'd love to connect with you.

Oh, sure, we can talk about whether I think I might be able to coach you to a better podcast, but first let's see how much free advice you can get out of me. You might be surprised to hear that I don't offer to coach everyone. Sometimes I can see that they just need a quick tip or some encouragement and they're all set.

Anyway, head to my website - podcast performance coach dot com and book it, daddio.

050 How Greed Can Hurt Your Podcast Mar 06, 2018
    Show notes

    Don't be a sell out!

No, I'm not talking about never accepting money from a sponsor or selling ads on your podcast. I'm talking about treating your audience like a commodity.

I get it. You worked hard to build your audience and you're a starving podcaster making pennies (if you're lucky). But, now that you've earned all of these listeners, don't risk losing them by selling out.

In this episode, I'll give you a VERY clear (and, unsubscribe-worthy) example of how one podcaster let greed and the desire to make money as a podcaster totally destroy his integrity and his listener's trust. Oh, it was bad.

And, I tell you the one SUPER popular marketing technique that could land you in the exact situation - pimping out your audience and pissing them off in a big way.

Plus, I tell you the one question you need to ask yourself before committing to any kind of promotional content. Here's a hint: Bad things happen when you stop thinking about your listener first.

I know that everyone in the podcasting world is constantly telling you that it's all about the hustle. Here's the thing about hustle, you don't want it showing. Nobody wants to feel hustled.

Seriously… did you subscribe to this podcast just so I could hustle you. Rhetorical questions… the answer is Hell NO! So, if you don't love that feeling then you can guess how your audience will feel if you do it to them.

Hold on to your reputations, honor your audience and say no to the desire to sell out.

Now, if you don't know who your audience is, check out Episode 37: Who Are You Talking To? It is my most popular episode for good reason. And if that doesn't clarify things then, grab my 30 Days to a Better Podcast coaching package and we'll figure it out together.

Here are a few more podcasts that will help you build your relationship with your listener (you know, the ones you're not going to sell out…)

    Episode 27: Get Personal

    Episode 41: Maximum Listener Engagement

Episode 29: Why I Talk to One Podcast Listener

    Free Download: Engaging Podcast Blueprint

And, check out Episode 25 on How to Handle Sponsorships for ways you CAN make money from your podcast (ehem, the RIGHT way)

Now, go on. Hit play… you've got a lot of listening to do!

049 How Much Time Should You Budget for Podcasting? Feb 20, 2018
    Show notes

Is podcasting a giant time-suck? It certainly feels like that for a lot of podcasters.

So, are they doing it wrong? Are you doing it wrong? Probably not. In this episode, I breakdown where all that podcasting time goes and what kind of time you should be budgeting for each episode.

Warning to new podcasters - this might be hard to hear. But, you need to hear it because the time commitment is no small thing.

It's a reality that for some reason, not a lot of podcasters talk about. It's definitely something that most newbies are naive about. But, we're going to change that (and maybe help a few of you silently suffering podcasters know that you're not alone - and you're probably not doing it wrong).

I'm not talking about starting a podcast. That's a whole different thing. In this episode, I'm giving you a reality check on the time you'll need to create each episode of your podcast once your podcast has been launched and you're up and running.

I'm not pulling back the curtains to scare any of you off, by the way - this is all about giving you a reality check so that you can be realistic when it comes to budgeting time for your podcast. If you know how much time to set aside each week or month, then your podcast has a much better chance of making it past episode 10.

Of course, it depends on the length and format of your show. But, there are some things that are most likely to suck up your time each episode. From researching to writing, recording, editing and promoting, the hours add up quickly. Pile a few more hours on if you're trying to create something really great or really firing up the promotions jets.

In this episode, I'll give you the time tally on creating a standard 30 minute podcast. Plus, I'll explain what could push this time up. Plus, I'll share how some smart podcasters are minimizing their efforts with a few production tricks - leaving more time for you to listen to my podcast, think about gifts you could buy me or work on that song about me you've been thinking about. Can you please stop putting those things off...FOCUS!

Okay, how much time do YOU think it takes to create a solid 30 minute podcast? Listen to my thoughts and then share yours with me on Facebook or drop me an email.

The more we talk opening about the time it takes, and the more we realistically we budget our time, the more joy we can have in the creative process.

048 How Perfectionism is a Problem for your Podcast Feb 06, 2018
    Show notes

Hands up if your podcast is perfect.

If your hand is up then you are either being a smart ass, totally delusional or both. Nobody's podcast is perfect - me included. And, that's okay.

In this episode of the Just the Tip, I talk about how perfectionism can get in your way and that sometimes, good enough is, well, good enough. This was a hard lesson for me to learn. I was raised to strive for perfect. I always thought 'good enough' was a lazy man's way out of trying harder.

And, I'll admit it, it hurts my ego a little bit when people point out my imperfections. And, they sometimes do. But, in this episode, you'll find out how I got over my need to be perfect and why you should too.

So, whether you have a podcast that you labour over or you're just starting out and trying to create something amazing, I'm here to tell you - perfect ain't worth it.

Now, don't get me wrong - this is not full license to produce crap. There's still one very good reason to keep getting better and to have some pride in production. I'll tell you what that reason is in this episode as well.

And, I'll tell you the three questions you need to answer when you're trying to determine if a production is ready to be released or whether you need to do a little more work on it. If you have a tendency to perfectionism, these three simple questions that will free you from your ego and hours of tinkering.

My goal with this episode is to help you find the creamy middle between shitsville and perfectionist's paralysis. If we can find that for you, then your podcast will continuously get better, will serve your audience, and will be a hell of a lot more fun to produce.

Join me as we kick perfectionism in the ass! Step 1: press play and listen.

047 How to Use SFX to Make Your Podcast Better Jan 23, 2018
    Show notes

Whoop, whoop, re-er, re-er, re-er… sound effects in your podcast can be annoying or effective. It all depends on whether you're doing it right.

SFX can be fun but they can also derail a podcast, piss off your listener or just sound cheesy (which might be fine, if it's intentional or ironic). There is a right way and wrong way to use sound effects in your podcast. Do it right and you'll enhance your listener's experience AND create better engagement and get more conversions.

So, what am I talking about? You've likely heard them in other podcasts. Bells, short music stingers, applause and even the famous Homer Simpson WOO HOO! Done right, they communicate a mood, tell your listener where you are in the show, or, in some cases, bring the listener's attention back. If you're not using sound effects, you might want to consider it. But - be warned… it's a slippery slope. It starts out fun and before you know it, you've gone too far and it's suddenly annoying!

In this episode, I tell you how to navigate that slippery slope. I share why and how you to use sound effects to enhance your show - no matter the format of your podcast.

I remember my algebra teacher in high school. Whenever he lost a student's interest, he would whip out short piece of chalk from his pocket. (Weird right, I know, but this teacher would carry around pockets of chalk butts. I'm sure he went into the other classrooms and stole them from other teachers.) Anyway, he use to throw them us, I mean kids who weren't paying attention, to say "Wake up!" Trust me, it captured everyone's attention. Heck, even if the teacher missed, we all perked up. I'm pretty sure teachers aren't aloud to do that anymore, and as podcasters, well there's the whole 'laws of physics' thing that makes it impossible for us to throw chalk stubs but the next best thing is sound effects or audio "earmarks" (and it's a lot less mean!)

When done right, sound effects can bring your listener's attention back to you, signify a certain part of the show, or even create an emotion that can help draw your listener in deeper, creating a better connection and memorable moments.

Click play and find out how you can improve listener engagement and enjoyment with SFX. Don't make me throw this chalk at you!

046 Should You Ignore iTunes Podcast Analytics? Jan 09, 2018
    Show notes

Have you seen your itunes podcast analytics yet? It's exciting to get to know your listener's habits but be careful.

In case you haven't checked it out yet, it's an amazing new tool to help podcasters learn their listeners behavior. You can use it to find out how long your fans are listening, on what devices, and from which country. You can even tell if your listeners are subscribers or not (psst... that may be an indicator you're not reminding them to subscribe enough). There's all sorts of data you can pull from this.

To see yours, just login to https://itunesconnect.apple.com

But, there's one one piece of data that excites me the most and it's a game changer. In this episode, I'll tell you what it is and why you need to be extremely cautious when analyzing it. It's very powerful but remember what Spiderman's uncle Ben said, "with great power comes great responsibility". This new data can hurt you if you use it wrong. Similar tech has been around the broadcast industry for years and I'll tell you how it has destroyed some programmers while making others super strong. Make sure you use your new data analyzing powers the right way.

Give this episode a listen and find out how accurate this data really is when it comes to representing your audience and how it can help you when it comes to programming your future podcast episodes.

Apple itunes podcast analytics is just the start of how we'll be able to understand our listeners better. It will help you shape your show and see exactly where you may be going wrong. Embrace this data and start becoming more of a producer than just a podcaster.

045 How to Set Killer Goals for Your Podcast Dec 12, 2017
    Show notes

What has your podcast done for you lately?

Measuring success can be difficult without realistic goals. Like driving without a map, having a podcast without goals can have you podcasting in circles. Fun for a while but then a bit pointless.

So let me ask you - do you remember why you started your podcast in the first place? Did you have a goal? Does your podcast have a goal?

Maybe your goal is sheer numbers - which is great if you just want to feel loved. But, if you want to do something with those numbers, you better know what all those downloads are for (and how many you need for them to get you what you want). If you want conversions, make sure your podcast includes the tools or tactics it needs to make that happen. Knowing what you want out of your podcast can help you reverse engineer each episode for maximum effectiveness.

And, every podcast you do without knowing your goals is opportunity lost. Each time you record without a mini goal or call to action that supports your bigger goal, you're throwing away an episode. That one episode could have been the Willy Wonka bar with the golden ticket...but you didn't even bother to look.

In this episode I'll give you tips on how to set goals for your podcast. We'll reverse engineer your goals into podcast. Then, I give you 3 easy steps to make sure your next episode is getting you closer to reaching your podcast goals.

So, before you hit record and start blabbing away about what it is you blab about. Take 5 minutes and get clear on what exactly you want out of this podcast thing you do (you may have forgotten, since you started). That way, you'll actually be able to answer that question we podcasters keep asking ourselves (why the hell am I doing this?!?) and not spend your time hosting a pity-party in your pajamas pouting about podcasting. Now, press play.
