The Ericsson Innovation Awards are a global university competition, giving students the opportunity to produce innovations based on Information Communication Technology (ICT) potential.
Jack Morton’s internal innovation practice, Genuine X traveled to Stockholm earlier this year to meet the finalists and discuss their ideas.
This year's theme was water, encouraging entrants to Dive Deeper into nature as our largest resource for technology. Ericsson’s search for the future in tech innovation brought us to all four corners of the globe, where just 4 finalists were selected from over 2,000 entries.
Each team has the chance of winning the grand prize of €25,000 and the opportunity to see their innovation bought to life.

“While millions of dollars have been spent on floating offshore wind projects, a huge amount of energy from the ocean currents just under the floaters hasn't been tapped into.”
These four engineers from Japan have designed an economical network of smart systems that can extract energy from natural wind and aquatic resources, in a bid to reduce the need for fossil fuel and nuclear energy. The potential network will be able to self-configure to optimise power production from these renewable energy sources, before autonomously returning to a base for maintenance.
In this episode, we discuss the potential of the εswift design system to generate power, while simultaneously solving ongoing renewable resource challenges.

“There is insufficient research on the distribution of microplastics in oceans”
Having met at school, this team now studies at The National University of Singapore. They collaborated to create a self-sustaining, fully automated "smart" ocean filtration system. Inspired by manta-ray filtering mechanisms, the MANTA collects microplastic pollution in oceans. Different from current static solutions, the MANTA is incorporated into ships' ballasts, reducing the need for independent energy use. The MANTA also gathers data on areas with high-volumes of pollution, providing a deeper understanding of ocean currents and where they are transporting microplastics.
We find out more about the dynamic filtration system that could help reduce the worrying levels of pollution in our oceans.

“While technology is rapidly becoming more automated, we have barely changed the way we access our oceans over the last century”
Inspired by cuttlefish technology, this beach dwelling group of friends from Adelaide, Australia has designed a Bio-AUV with a unique propulsion system enabling otherwise untraversable underwater exploration. The team hopes to create a commercially viable Autonomous Underwater Vehicle to assist scientists in crucial data gathering from complex reef systems.
We find out how the non-invasive technology will benefit research and commercial organisations, whilst potentially reducing the effects of climate change in underwater ecosystems.

This week Tom and producer Ben sat down to chat with Liam Paton and Nathan Prince, co-founders of Silents Studios.
This creative duo bring an interdisciplinary team specialising inlive, site-specific moving image and music composition for screens, surroundings and multi-sensory experiences. They work simultaneously in light, image, sound, and space, to explore the human condition through visceral and emotionally charged experiences.
We talk to them about what it takes being a creative partnership working together for more than 15 years, how to maintain agile as a business when their projects often demand niche skill sets and how VR has changed the landscape for them.
Genuine X also celebrated its 1st birthday on the day it was recorded (12/12/19), even though we couldn't get our hands on a gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan cake we shared a cup of tea and gave a little caffeinated cheers.

Show notes:
With an enviable list of completed projects, we wanted to share links to the beautiful work completed by Silent Studios and other pieces that inspire them.

During Mental Health Awareness month, we invited author and CEO of Vala Health, Pete Trainor to speak on the Genuine X Podcast. Pete is, among other things a mental health campaigner, so we thought it fitting that he talks to us about creative and social uses for AI and technology that may help us challenge the problems of mental illness.
Please be aware that while the conversation is centered around AI and technology, some things discussed in the episode refer to topics like suicide and could, therefore, be upsetting for some listeners.
If any of the themes mentioned resonate with you, we would encourage you to reach out and speak to a loved one or someone close to you. Don't suffer in silence.

Check out this talk given by Pete in 2018 at Interact London - UX and Design conference. In this, he asks the question, 'what if humans could form more meaningful relationships with machines?'

Welcome back to the Genuine X Podcast.
In this episode, Martyn and Tom talk to Dr. Shama Rahman - A scientist, artist, and creative technologist. We discuss the science behind creativity. How is it measured? Can it be commoditised? And is brainstorming a waste of time?
We also talk about creativity's unpredictability, and how AI is being used to support lateral thinking and could become the creative partner of the future?
Enjoy

Welcome back to the Genuine X Podcast. In this episode Martyn and Tom talk to Guy Gadney - Co-founder and CEO of Charisma.ai
Charisma.ai powers a new way of telling stories, by using artificial intelligence to give audiences the ability to talk to characters, build relationships with them, and have the story itself adapt and react to how audiences play through it. This deepens engagement for audiences and lets them influence the story.
In this episode Martyn and Tom speak to Guy about the future of storytelling and AI's part to play in it.
You will hear reference to the creative and thought provoking work of Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, the interactive psychological thriller which aired on Netflix in 2018. They discuss how shows like this and streaming services like Netflix are creating change in the narrative storytelling space.
We also chat to Guy about the potential effect such bespoke and immersive storytelling can have and whether that leaves an ethical responsibility for the creator to safe guard the user.
Enjoy.

Welcome back to the Genuine X Podcast.
In this episode, Martyn and Tom talk to Dr James Morgan from the University of Westminster. Dr Morgan has been looking at how we can use emotional triggers to develop and enhance live events. Using technology such as facial recognition, we are now able to read emotions in real time allowing us to hack people's emotions through changing their environment.

Welcome back to the Genuine X Podcast. In this episode, Martyn and Tom talk to the founder of Naaut, Co-founder of the London Space Network and NASA Advisor Anushka Sharma.
Anushka or Nush to those who know her is a self-confessed 'expert generalist'. Her passion for space travel and love for people has led her from working with startups in London's Silicon Roundabout to become an advisor for NASA in what could be considered to be the ultimate pivot.
Naaut (@naaut_), her latest venture focuses on connecting the right people with innovative technology for our multi-planetary future. (I mean... that's pretty cool).
Nush also is one of the co-founders of the London Space Network. A group of like-minded people who meet up to chat over a few drinks about how all of us could be working in the space sector.
Also, keep an eye on @nushkino on Twitter for a possible discount code of Cog X 2019, a festival of AI and emerging technology being held between Monday 10th -Wednesday 12th June in London .
Have a look at NASA Frontier Development Labs if you are interested in making the pivot yourself.
