    Show notes

In this episode of the It’s a Mimic! podcast, the panel of Dungeon Masters discard the idea of simple Hit Point management in Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, and look at what other parts of a character sheet can be vulnerable and manipulated. Stat damage, stolen items, and more await you in this latest episode.

There's more to threaten just a character's life force, and Adam, Terry, and Dan offer tips and tricks to breathe new life and unusual dangers into the game. How do you attack a character without angering a player? What are the most coveted parts of the character sheet? And how often should alternative threats be used? These answers and more are available in this latest episode of our Dungeon Mastery series!

    E043 - Mob Mentality - Gnolls: The Fast and the Furry-ous Nov 18, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of the It's A Mimic! podcast, the panel of Dungeon Masters embraces the bastard child of the mob-type monsters: Gnolls. Between their rich lore, strong stats, and insane allies, gnolls easily stick out as one of the least fan-appreciated aspects of Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, and the DM's decide to pour their love and affection onto these horrifyingly brutal hyena-men.

With a terrifying new addition from Descent Into Avernus, a shocking revelation about hyenas, and a number of different insights into tactics for both Dungeon Masters and Player Characters, this episode is just brimming with inspiration about what gnoll encounters should look like at your table. Also, there's a significant tangent or two in this episode, so buckle up.

E042 - Class: Half- Casters, All Fun - Rangers: A Guide to Guides Nov 11, 2019
    Show notes

In this week's episode of the It's A Mimic! podcast, the panel of Dungeon Masters heads out of the city and into the untamed wilderness of Dungeons & Dragons to discover all they can about what makes Rangers a worthwhile class to play. After breaking down the basic class, they explore the Hunter and Beast Master subclasses, and then discuss the Revised Ranger option from Unearthed Arcana. As usual with the class breakdowns, the DM's look at the strengths and weaknesses of the class, before they round out the episode with their own creative builds.

From animal companions to whirlwind attacks, Adam, Dan, and Terry dig into all that the Player's Handbook has to offer on Rangers, including the direction their class-exclusive spells hint toward, and when to start thinking about multiclassing out of the class. The group hammers home the need for Dungeon Master collaboration and meta-game decisions with this class, and even offers up some alternative homebrew rules to make Rangers a little more relevant. So tune in and enjoy another episode of the It's A Mimic! podcast, where you never know what you're going to get!

    E041 - Class: Half-Casters, All Fun - Paladins: Smite-y Fine People Nov 04, 2019
    Show notes

Today's episode of the It's A Mimic! podcast focuses on the metal warriors that radiate righteousness and lay the smackdown with the power of their smites: Paladins. In Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, the paladin is no longer bound by alignments, or even gods, and the panel of Dungeon Masters stop to look at what that means for the classic holy knights.

Dan, Adam, and Megan each take a close look at one of the subclasses in the Player's Handbook, and as they compare and contrast what the paladin has to offer, they discuss alignment, tenets, the nitty-gritty details of resource management. How powerful is Lay on Hands, really? What spell slot should you not use for Divine Smite? And what constitutes Lawful Stupid. This extra long episode really tears apart the best and the worst of the paladin (as presented in the PHB), and Adam even manages to get Megan to join in his own personal crusade...

    E040 - Worldbuilding - Horror: All the Gory Details Oct 28, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of the It's A Mimic! podcast, the panel of Dungeon Masters breaks down their favourite genre: Horror. It's one of the most difficult tones to hit around the table, so each of the DM's explain their methods and perspectives, and shine a little light on the darkest of campaign types.

Exploration is key when it comes to injecting horror and dread into a D&D campaign, and Adam, Dan, and Terry talk about planning ahead to lay a foundation for your players, and what you can do to bring different kinds of fear to your Halloween session. Anticipation, specificity, and suspense are all key factors, as well as controlling the room and controlling your own performance. But what do you do when it all goes wrong? How can you recognize when you're affecting a player? And when does it become too much?
