Ep. 1733 Rachele Tiezzi | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon Jan 09, 2024
    Show notes

Welcome to Episode 1733 on Italian Wine Podcast, Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon. Today, he will be interviewing Rachele Tiezzi of Tiezzi Vini in Montalcino

    More about today’s winery

The Tiezzi Wine Estate bears the name of its owner, Enzo Tiezzi, a well-known agronomist-oenologist from Montalcino, who has always worked in the winegrowing and oenology sector around Siena, particularly in Montalcino, where for years he has been director and oenology consultant for estates of outstanding fame, as well as being part of the executive management and Chairman of the Consortium for Brunello di Montalcino.

In the 1980s, Mr Tiezzi decided to set up his own business and established the estate with the purchase of “Cerrino”, the first of the three areas, known as “poderi”, that make up the whole estate as it is today, followed, a few years later, by “Cigaleta”. His love of Montalcino’s history and his search for tradition led Enzo Tiezzi to annex the historical “Soccorso” land parcel to the estate.

Ep. 1732 Spreading The Italian Wine Gospel | Masterclass US Wine Market With Juliana Colangelo Jan 08, 2024
    Show notes

Welcome to Episode 1732 on Italian Wine Podcast, Masterclass US Wine Market With Juliana Colangelo. Today she moderates a wine2wine Business Forum 2023 session entitled “Spreading the Italian Wine Gospel to the Next Generation - Engaging New Sommeliers Italy through Discovery” with Shelley Lidgren

    Abstract:

When Shelley Lindgren opened A16 Restaurants in California in 2004, southern Italy was far less travelled than it is today - especially in terms of wine. The historic viticulture and autochthonous grapes from this region were ripe for rediscovery by an international audience thirsty for unknown wines. This session will discuss the ups and downs of attempting to focus a wine list based on the regions and grapes of Southern Italy at A16 over the past 20 years, and the difficulties of sourcing wines from small areas such as Ischia or Molise.

Lindgren discusses how times have changed and the growth of exploration in many southern Italian wine regions is uncovering a pastoral paradise of grapevines. These regions combine the preserved ancient grapes, along with the present-day story of Italy as one of the most biodiverse countries for wine in the world. In her newly released book, Italian Wine - The History, Regions and Grapes of an Iconic Wine Country - Lindgren recounts these legendary stories and shares her love of Italian wine.

    More about today’s guest:

Shelley Lindgren is the Wine Director and owner of San Francisco’s Southern-Italian restaurant A16. She has received the “James Beard Award” for “Outstanding Wine Program”; has received the 2023 “Slow Wine Fair Award” for “Best Selection of Good, Clean, and Fair Italian Wine”; and has been knighted by the Italian government, receiving the prestigious “Cavaliere dell’Ordine Della Stella Italia” distinction for her professional dedication to Italian wine. Shelley’s third book “Italian Wine - The history, regions and grapes of an iconic wine country” was published in August 2023. Shelley’s work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Food & Wine, Punch, San Francisco Chronicle, and many other publications. Shelley started a winery called Tansy Wines in 2021 with Kitty Oestlien – inspired by Italian varietals of Northern California but also Pinot Noir and an upcoming Cabernet Sauvignon all from organically grown, single vineyards. She served on the board of La Cocina, the Guild of Sommeliers, and Slide Ranch and is a member of Les Dames d’ Escoffier and ambassador of the Culinary Institute of America.

    About today’s Host:

“In 2013, a wine guru walked into my life, and I set off on a path of demystifying the wines of Europe–a section of stores and wine lists that I previously avoided. This path rewarded me with an understanding of what wine really is…a centerpiece of gatherings with families and friends; something to facilitate celebration. When visiting family wineries in Europe, I found the experience to be like an invitation to a family gathering, and I admired the passion of the winemakers for their craft. I launched Wide Roots to bring the essence of this experience to more wine drinkers, hoping to help them in unlocking this world much the same way that I did for myself. I am certified by Vinitaly International Academy as an Italian Wine Ambassador. I am also the subject of Wine Hunter, a documentary that follows my journey launching Wide Roots and my travels through the vineyards of Italy.”

Italian Wine Podcast is proud to be a media partner of wine2wine Business Forum and we are pleased to present this series of market focus sessions, recorded during the Forum held in Verona in November 2023.

wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business event, held annually in Verona, Italy since 2014. The event is a key annual reference point for wine producers and wine professionals from around the world, providing an opportunity to network, develop and expand their wine business worldwide.

    More about today’s winery:

Mauro Molino is a family-owned winery founded by Mauro in 1982. After inheriting the family vineyards from our grand-father, our father Mauro immediately decided to produce his own wines. Leaded by his passion for agronomy and love for the Langa area, he started to make a lot of research to find the best vineyards in La Morra, where he bought most of the plots in the 90’s. In the early 2000s (2003 and 2008) the second generation of the Molino family – Matteo and Martina – joined the company. Both graduated at the Enological School of Alba, we suddenly brough dynamism, enthusiasm and innovation to the company but without forget our tradition. We now lead the winery with passion always trying to communicate in the best way possible our philosophy, our love for the territory and our sustainable projects. We currently own 20 hectares and produce 160000 bottles per year

    Guest Bio

Salvino Benanti was born in the foothills of Mount Etna, in Catania, Sicily, in May 1974. He is married to Olivia and has two sons. After growing up in Sicily, he moved to Switzerland in 1988, at age 14, to attend the International School of Geneva. That year, his father Giuseppe, a trained chemist, founded Benanti Winery, reviving an old family tradition, with the intention of making fine wines on the slopes of one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Together with his brother, he took over the family winery at the age of 38. That year, family divested other assets to focus exclusively on the winery. It was a decision they have never regretted.

Built on the foundations laid by Giuseppe Benanti, and thanks to the vision of the second generation, the winery has a well-earned international reputation, with the aim of making Benanti one of the finest wineries in the Old World.
