    CELTIC PODCAST NEWS

    * Helping you celebrate Celtic culture through music. My name is Marc Gunn. I am a Celtic and Geek musician and podcaster. This podcast is dedicated to the indie Celtic musicians. I want to ask you to support these artists. Share the show with your friends. And find more episodes at celticmusicpodcast.com. You can also support this podcast on Patreon.

You may not realize. I host two other podcasts. Celtfather Music & Travel is sort of a behind the scenes look at my music and travel adventures. I just recently posted an interview I did with Samantha Gillogly. She's a Celtic fiddler and violinist who will be up next. We chatted about how she fell in love with Lord of the Rings in that episode. Listen and subscribe at celtfather.com.

I also rebranded my Pub Songs Podcast. It's now called Geek Pub Songs. The content is still pretty much the same. You'll get a lot of Celtic music plus there will be a bit more geek music. So if you've ever wondered what I meant by Geek musician, this is a good way to find out about it. Find out more at pubsong.net.

Finally, I don't think I've mentioned it, but my next album comes out on March 6, 2018. It's called As Long As I'm Flyin' features music inspired by Joss Whedon's cancelled cult classic TV show Firefly. Go to FireflyDrinkingSongs.com for details.

Steve emailed: "Hi Marc, Today i was coming home from a really hard day of work, sat down in my room full of stuff to and thought about how i will be able to do all these things and go to work tomorrow again. Then i thought, well, i might as well listen to some awesome music to calm down. I clicked on the celticmusicpodcast bookmark. What i found was the newest episode 'working hard'. It fitted so perfectly for this day, thanks a lot. Especially because it featured one of my favourite tunes, the Morrisons, which i am trying to learn on the bouzouki at the moment. I remember when i first found your podcast. I was walking through the elfish woods of the alps with a friend, drinking a good irish uisce and listening to episode #151, which i randomly found on youtube. Being there with this music was very magic, and it made us fall in love with irish music (which we never heard before) and we formed a band afterwards. Thanks for inspiring us! Slainte!"

Someone made an angry comment on Facebook the other day. He asked if I was paying royalties to the artists whose music I was using. One of the tragedies of creating this podcast is that I cannot afford to pay artists for play in the show. I calculated that it would cost over $20,000 per episode if I was to pay the standard royalty rate.

Instead, I ask artists to permit me to use their music royalty-free. But I feel bad about just doing that. So years ago, I started donating a portion of the income I earn from compilation CDs and from Patreon to Celtic non-profits, to help support our Celtic community.

I just compiled the list of 2017 donations. We donated a total of $3885.57 that went to Celtic non-profits last year. That means we have donated a grand total of over $31,000 to Celtic non-profits since I started donating money in 2004. You can see a breakdown of the Celtic non-profit donations on the website.

You can support this podcast by becoming a Patron of the Podcast on Patreon. Your generous pledge of $1 per episode or more keeps this show running and helps Celtic non-profits keep sharing Celtic music and culture. Plus, you'll get episodes before regular listeners. It's a great to support Celtic music.

I told her it was wonderful, and have been a listener for a number of years. While standing in line, she downloaded your podcast and planned to be a new listener on her drive home. I got an email from Iona last week. They said they are about to release final CD. The band is not breaking up, but the changing music industry is forcing them to change how they release music, or in their case, stop releasing it.

This is a good time to point out that if you enjoy the music of bands in this podcast, there are several important things you can to do. If you still buy CDs, buy one from one of these bands. If not, buy downloads or band merchandise. Or if you're streaming music (outside of this podcast, of course), then follow the bands on Spotify or whatever streaming website they prefer.

Finally, I'm planning to do more Spotify promotions. So if you have any Celtic music playlists on Spotify, I'd love to hear from you. Drop me an email.

If you want to find 11 more ways you can help support these bands, go to songhenge.com. This simple easy list will do a lot to help your favorite bands succeed.

I'm from Chicago but my Dad was from Liverpool, and I spent quite a lot of time in the British Isles. I'm deep in the bowels of NaNoWriMo at the moment and your show has been providing me with the most perfect soundtrack to keep my butt focused on finishing this project. You're doing amazing work. Thank you!"

Trish Bartley shared the first podcast of 2018 on Facebook and wrote: "This week's podcast is full of gorgeous songs to drive by! Makes my 45 minute commute "almost" too short. Lol. Thanks Marc Gunn! Awesome job!"

George Mears emailed: "Marc, I've been a lurker for years as I've stumbled through adulthood, fatherhood, husbandhood, and school. I've become a patron but I didn't see any opportunity to make a one time donation, which i'd like to do for all the ... years I've been mooching. Any easy answer or should I just mail you cash?"

Every year, I compile a list of the most-played Celtic bands on the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. We're gonna end the year with some of my favorite bands played on the show in 2017.

This is your last chance to vote for your favorite bands in the Celtic Top 20. Find your favorite tracks in each show. Then go vote at bestcelticmusic.net/vote/. In a few weeks, I will share your votes with the world.

Celtfather Music & Travel podcast features an interview with Shannon Heaton of the Irish Music Stories. You may remember in show #314 Shannon Heaton was the the guest host of this podcast. I was really curious to learn about her history as an American playing traditional Irish music. She also published a video about Irish Session Etiquette. So I decided to ask her to share her insights into playing in Irish sessions in this podcast. Listen to episode #234 Demystifying Irish Sessions.

If you're in a Celtic band, I want to invite you to submit your new album to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. It's easy to do. Complete the permission form at http://4celts.com/. Then follow the instructions to send a digital copy of your album.

Band Social Media Promotion Tip. I've never been super fond of social media. Partially because of the negative nature of the beast. But partially because I've never been able to figure it out. I generally keep to myself.

However, over the past year, I've made a dent in the social media monster and I wanted to share my best social media promotion tip which I beg you to use with your favorite Celtic artist. It's simple too--SHARE.

Don't just laugh and like a post. If you support Celtic music, take an active role and share it. With one little click, you will not only proclaim your love of Celtic culture, but you will also immensely help these artists who are fighting to be heard.

And of course, you can do the same with any posts from the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. Please SHARE your love of Celtic music.

Seán Roy Mac Aodha emailed: "Hi Mark, First off, I want to say that I really enjoy listen to your Celtic music podcasts. You do an excellent job putting together selections, and listening to an hour of the ICM podcasts is one of my great pleasures and I'm happy to be a subscriber.

Right now, I'm listening to the podcast #324, Celtic in Connemara, and I think it's great that you want to learn to speak the language a little better. While I'm not a native speaker, I am an Irish-American with exposure to the language, and my pronunciation is pretty good. I'm glad to answer any questions you may have. Although many words look intimidating, it's really not that hard once you learn the rules of Irish orthography.

You should probably know that the correct name of the language spoken in the Gaeltacht regions of Ireland is properly referred to in English as "Irish," and not Gaelic, as many people think, as "Gaelic" can mean Scottish Gaelic or even Manx. In Irish, the word for the language of course is "Gaeilge."

Good luck with your Duolingo lessons, and I'll look forward to your continuing podcasts. Thanks so much for all you do."

TODAY'S SHOW IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY... THE CELTIC INVASION OF THE ISLE OF SKYE

You can join me in Scotland in June 2018. Imagine joining a small group of eight Celtic music fans, driving in a van as we explore the Isle of Skye. Some call it one of the most-beautiful islands in the world, with spectacular vistas, gorgeous castles and towns, fairy pools, and magic. We won't see everything. Instead, we will stay in one area, and get to know the region through its history, culture, and legends. Subscribe to the mailing list to join the invasion at http://celticinvasion.com/

Imagine a world with no Celtic music. Pretty crappy, right? All you have is boring pop music being shoved down your throats by big record labels. You wouldn't get to experience the incredible music shared each and every week in the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast.

This episode has been on my mind for a long time. It was inspired by Sisters of Murphy's latest album which called "Working Stiffs Unite". I wanted a show for everyone who is struggling to make ends meet, when the odds seem against you. I hope this show will inspire you to keep creating, working and following your dreams.

Dan Buchner emailed from from Niagara Falls, NY: "Hey Marc! Discovered the podcast over the summer. Great mix of music. The last couple weeks I've listened to a few I got behind on while restoring some old windows from a friend's 100 year old house. The tempo and mix helps me get through the work with ease."

Will Collins emailed: "Hey Marc (if I can call you that), I only found your podcast at the beginning of October but it's already got its hooks in me. I am a junior in college dual majoring in engineering and math. This isn't as exciting as anyone else, but I listen to the newest episodes and the giant backlog that exists every saturday during my 8-hour study sessions. It really makes the time fly, and I really appreciate all the work you put into making the best podcast around! Hope this finds you merry,"

Thanks Will. I'm so glad you found the show. It's funny. You say that listening while studying for eight hours isn't as exciting, but man, I love to hear it. Sure it's nice to think that we are all traveling in Ireland or Scotland, and listening to the podcast. But the truth is I listen while cleaning house, giving the girls a bath, or playing it to wear out overactive daughters right before bed.

Most of our lives are spent in mundane tasks. And while you may think it is uninteresting, personally, I find those mundane pieces of life to be fascinating and inspiring. And it lets me know how to make the show better. So thank you
