    WELCOME CELTOPHILE TO CELTIC MUSIC

    * Helping you celebrate Celtic culture through music. I am Marc Gunn. I'm a musician and podcaster. This Podcast is here to build our diverse Celtic community and help the incredible artists who so generously share their music with you. If you hear music you love, please email artists to let them know you heard them on the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast.

You can find a link to all of the artists in the shownotes, along with show times, when you visit our website at celticmusicpodcast.com.

I am super happy to announce that we hit our Kickstarter goal in just 3 hours. And as I record this, the campaign has already doubled its initial goal. So I decided to launch the first stretch goal. If we can reach $5000, then you will get a 2 - hour Celtic Rock special on August 31. I was not planning an episode that day. So you'll have an extra episode in August.

I hope you enjoyed the two bonus mini - episodes I released. I plan to do two more next week before the campaign ends on Friday, August 11 at 8 AM eastern.

So please make a pledge. Support the campaign to share your love of Celtic culture through music.

THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST!

Because of Your kind and generous support, this show comes out four times a month. Your generosity funds the creation, promotion and production of the show. It allows us to attract new listeners and to help our community grow.

As a patron, you get music - only episodes before regular listeners, vote in the Celtic Top 20, and you get a private feed to listen to the show. All that for as little as $1 per episode.

A special thanks to our newest Patrons of the Podcast: James Baker, Ann McBride, Jakub Liput

I am extremely grateful to all of our amazingly generous patrons. But if you want to support the podcast this week, please make a pledge on Kickstarter. So you can get a bonus show and so that you can also financially support the podcast with a one - time pledge, while also getting cool rewards.

You can get an album pin, a physical CD, a tote bag, and a shirt. You can also make a song request for one of our December episodes. The easiest way is to just get the collection. For $100. But whatever you're willing to pledge to support the campaign is incredible.

And hopefully, you'll also share the Kickstarter link with your friends.

HERE IS YOUR THREE STEP PLAN TO SUPPORT THE PODCAST

    1. Go to our Patreon page.
    2. Decide how much you want to pledge every week, $1, $5, $10. Make sure to cap how much you want to spend per month.
    3. Keep listening to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast to celebrate Celtic culture through music.

    I WANT YOUR FEEDBACK

What are you doing today while listening to the podcast? You can send a written comment along with a picture of what you're doing while listening. Or send a picture you took of a band that you saw.

Email me at celticpodcast@gmail, message me on Facebook, or contact me through Mastodon @celtfather@c.im.

Phil Hartline replied to the Celtic Music Magazine: "I listen in my shop, where I make musical instruments and general wood projects. I am celebrating Celtic Culture through music by learning to play the fiddle! I have a wonderful opportunity to learn true Co. Clare style from a man who spent a lot of time there. Beginner that I am, I will still be playing tunes on my fiddle to celebrate!"

Paul replied: "Marc, I was sitting at my computer writing code ... as one does ..

"For St Patrick's Day?" I will be participating in an Irish Road Bowling event with my co - workers at the Green Bank Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia

We started back in October, listening to music for Samhain, then continued into November and December with Celtic Christmas ... and really we listen to Celtic music year - round - but I will be celebrating Celtic culture by wearing the green on Friday while I'm busy at Ból an bhóthair, then hoisting a proper stout afterwards. Going to a fife and drum reunion in July (in Williamsburg, VA), where I will be playing a heck - ton of good Irish, Scots, and Welsh music (as well as a smattering of German and English marches, because, well, 18th C. Military music was all over the place)

    We always enjoy your shows!!!"

PENNIERICH replied: "During the show we usually take a break and just relax and listen."

Jesse Ferguson emailed: "I'll be listening to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast at work that day, then practicing my favourite Irish songs at home on my guitar. Finally, I'll be activating a new Irish song on my YouTube channel, to share with my subscribers, a tradition I've kept going for over 12 years."

Michael Maccarone emailed: "Marc Gunn, I usually download episodes and stockpile them. I listen to them on (my rare) vacations, after I have broken them down into 20 - 25 minute chunks (my mp3 player won't rewind within a track, so I split each episode into 3 - 5 mini episodes, which makes it easier if I missed something and want to go back). As a result, I'm only up to episode #430 so far.

I don't have any specific Celtic culture plans [for St Patrick's Day] for this week, other than I just watched the Oscar - winning short, An Irish Goodbye yesterday, and hope to get to the Banshees of Inisheerin in the next couple of weeks. Keep up the good work!"

WELCOME IRISH & CELTIC MUSIC MINI PODCAST

I'm Marc Gunn, and I launched a Kickstarter for the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast on Thursday. I need your help to make this a smashing success. This is the second 6 - Pack Mini episode you're getting as we promote the campaign which ends on August 11.

You can find a link to all of the artists in the shownotes, along with show times, when you visit our website.

And if you want to make a Song Dedication for a very special Dedication episode in December, you can do that as part of the campaign. Go to celticmusic.org/celticrock to make a pledge.

    CLOSING

I hope you enjoyed the show.

In the last episode, I mentioned the Album Pins. Well, there will also be physical CDs funded by this campaign. I'm only printing 100 copies. The album hasn't been available in probably 10 - 12 years. So this is your chance to own the limited - edition album.

And if you're concerned about Climate Change, like I am, then I'd like to recommend that you also get a Celtic Earth Tote Bag as well.

I'm gonna bet that single - use plastic bags will no longer be allowed at grocery stores in the next 10 years. California is already doing that as are many countries around the world. It's great for the environment. So you can get ahead of the curve and do something great for our planet.

There are lots of other rewards to check out. Go to celticmusic.org/celticrock to make a pledge.

WELCOME IRISH & CELTIC MUSIC MINI PODCAST

I'm Marc Gunn, and I launched a Kickstarter for the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast on Thursday. I want this launch to be super successful. So I'm gonna give you a 6-Pack Mini episode to inspire you to make a pledge. The campaign only goes for two weeks. I'm gonna bring you an extra mini episode every 2-3 days plus, the main show which comes out every Thursday.

I'll tell you more about what's on the album in a moment.

You can find a link to all of the artists in the shownotes, along with show times, when you visit our website at celticmusicpodcast.com.

    Album Pins - CLOSING

I hope you enjoyed the show. One of the main things I'm funding with this campaign is an Album Pin. Album pins are lapel pins. But each album pin is themed to a specific CD. So when you own the album pin, you'll also get the associated album, so you can wear your album on your sleeve.

This year's design reminded me of my compilation, The Secret World of Celtic Rock, that I released at the start of 2005. So I decided to use that as an excuse to re-release the physical CD as well. So you're gonna get the album and the enamel pin if you choose that reward.

There are lots of other rewards to check out. Follow my link at celticmusic.org/celticrock to make a pledge.

THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST!

Bruce Thompson replied to the Celtic Music Magazine from Columbus, Ohio: "Hello Marc, Thank you for curating Celtic and Irish music for us with your podcast every week. My wife and I listen to your podcast every time we're in the car. And I listen at work.

On St. Patty's Day we usually go to a good Irish bar for some Guinness and shepherd's pie and sometimes Bangers and Mash, depending on when we get there. A few years ago we were lucky enough to go to Great Britain, Ireland and Scotland; a great 10 day vacation.

Last week (Saturday) was our Dublin, Ohio's St. Patricks Day parade and we always go to the Dublin Irish Festival in August. Our favorite bands are Gaelic Storm, We Banjo 3 and Eileen Ivers. It was a thrill to be there and listen to these amazing musicians. The Dublin Irish Festival is ALWAYS a great time!

Thanks again for sharing your musical talent, and creating such a wonderful listening experience! Slainte to you too, Marc!"

William Fisher emailed: "Usually I'm working on the computer listening to your podcast but I download to a portable player so I can listen in the car or whenever... For St Padraig's Day, The Irish social group I belong to is part of a day - long celebration in William's Park, St Petersburg FL. with music, food and games : - )"

Rebekah Hedstrom replied to the Celtic Music Magazine: "Usually driving while listening. We are going to have a quiet St Paddy's day this year. Corned beef and staying at home. :0)"

Brian McReynolds sent you a message on Patreon: "Just got the shirt I ordered and the bonus shirt. Thank you. I love them both. I think I will wear the new one tomorrow and the 2016 shirt Friday. Oh, and an early happy birthday to you. 😁"

Dennis McCarthy emailed some St Patrick's Day photos. He wrote: "Hope that you like these."

Susie Brown replied: "When listening to the podcast I'm usually trying to unwind after a labor intensive day of cleaning."

Sarah Fletcher replied: "Hi Marc, I am currently working while listening to the latest Celtic music podcast. It helps me get through the day. Thanks"

Daniel Faigin emailed: "Well, first, I'd like to encourage you to go back to putting the show number in the show title. It helps with how I organize things in iTunes.

What are you doing while listening? Generally, it is on in the background while I work, after I play off that day's playlist (not listened to in 3 years). If a song particularly captures my ear, I look up the artist and either purchase an album from them, or add it to my Amazon wish list. Found a number of great groups that way, through not only this podcast, but Mostly Folks and the Woodsongs podcast."

Go to MageNetwork.com for more podcasts.

PNiceberg emailed: "Hi Marc, Thanks for all your hard work and efforts. What are you doing while listening? Either working or out walking my dog and enjoying the fresh sounds of your show! I am listening to more Celtic music as well as trying my hand again at learning to play bagpipes!!!"

Patrick Rieger emailed a photo and wrote: "Hi Marc, I have been listening to your podcast for years, having learned about it back in 2006 when you mentioned it on the Renaissance Festival podcast.

Today I was listening to the Irish and Celtic Music podcast while airbrushing a small model of the starship Enterprise - D, and enjoying the early renaissance festival weather we were having here in Pittsburgh.

I help promote Irish and Celtic culture by being an admin on the Facebook page, Celtic Pittsburgh, created by my friend and Irish musician, Susan Borowski, to spread the word about any events regarding Irish and Celtic culture in western Pennsylvania. Before that, I made the Facebook event for the late Terry Griffith, for his monthly show at Mullaney's Harp & Fiddle Irish Pub in Pittsburgh.

Thank you for the many years of music and I look forward to many more."

brennan donnelly replied to the question of what he's doing while listening: "Everything - from working to gardening to riding in my car." On St Patrick's Day he planned to be "cooking Salmon for friends than having a session"

Jeremy King of Poitin said: "Hey Marc, I'm off to Vienna this St Pat's weekend - I'm sure there are one or two Irish pubs there. But really I'm going for a concert of film music by Pilsen Philharmonic Orchestra and strolling around the beautiful old city...."

Anne emailed: "I most often listen while I'm driving. On St. Patrick's Day I'll eat out for a special Irish meal."

Gary Randolph said: "I'm doing a storytelling performance for St. Patrick's Day."

Connie Kiefiuk emailed: "I am finishing an embroidery project while listening to the podcast. For St. Patrick's day cooking a traditional corned beef, cabbage, carrots, onion and potatoes meal. I am eating my homemade dinner with a glass (or two) of Guinness Stout wearing my green and watching "The Quiet Man" movie. Love your podcasts. I'm a newbie, discovered your program this past summer."

Shel O'Toole emailed: "Dear Marc, Thanks for sending out this song on ANZAC day. The words of the returned soldier M Edgerley would be powerful enough on their own but when presented by the wonderful voices of Jonny Dyer and Vicki Swan and their musical accompaniment they are deeply felt. I was moved to tears.

I tend to avoid ANZAC Day as it seems to have become a promotion of war rather than a remembrance of the horrors and loss. This song took me back to when I was a child and the purpose of ANZAC day was to acknowledge the futility and ongoing impact of war.

    This Aussie thanks you. Regards"

Brian McReynolds sent a picture: "So on my (local) travels, I wore my podcast shirt with my kilt while touring the B Reactor on the Hanford Nuclear Site in Washington State. It was well received by a tour guide and one of the people on the tour. Love your podcast and everything you do for the artists. ''

Tom Morley emailed around St Patrick's Day: "Marc, Our Chattanooga - based band Stringer's Ridge played a concert on St. Patrick's Day at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. (I am there on the faculty at the famous folk arts school usually once a year teaching beginning or intermediate Irish Fiddle.) We had a wonderful crowd and it was a great way to spend the best Irish day of the year! I am enclosing several photos of us at the historic Keith House where we put on the concert. (Tom Morley - fiddle, Fran Morley - bodhran, Bryant Haynes - guitar)

Thanks for all you do to promote Irish trad music!"

Marilyn S. Hansen sent a photo about Easter Rising Band: "14 seminarians got together years ago in St. Louis and developed an Irish band. Most of them are married now. They play at each other's weddings, but they also have regular gigs. The interesting part is how their kids take part… This is last year's celebration. I was out of town this year celebrating my sister's birthday the day before St. Patrick's Day. Thought I'd send you last year's photo. I'll send you a few that they've sent to me for this year.

Pete Watson emailed St Pat's photos: "Hi Marc, The Bookends had a fabulous time playing a number of shows throughout Ontario around St. Patrick's Day.Attached is a photo of Miriam (left) and Cait (right) on St. Paddy's Day for our gig at The Rec Room, Toronto, with our regular special guest bodhrán player extraordinaire, Romano Di Nillo.Romano is just back from 4+ years with Come From Away on Broadway and we were so glad to have him with us for these shows. The venue was handing out some "paddywhackery" to attendees and these 3 couldn't resist putting some on!"

Bruce Cummings, a Piper emailed a photo: "Hey Marc!Just to say how much I enjoy listening to the Celtic music you provide. You asked for pictures from St. Patrick's Day 2023, so here's a couple. I am part of the Lane Fire Brigade Pipes and Drums in Eugene Ore. We had a great weekend piping in the area.Keep up the good work!"

Jim O'Connor of Boston Blackthorne emailed a photo: "Hi Marc -hope you had a fabulous holiday!

Boston Blackthorne played 3 nights in Western MA, centered around St Patrick's Day as well as the big parade (the nation's oldest) in Holyoke MA.We played to crowded enthusiastic fans in Northampton MA and Holyoke MA.But perhaps the best gig (and story) was the one that arose spontaneously back in the lobby of our hotel after our St Pat's evening show.

The hotel lobby is most frequently empty but this night is was crowded with about 100 boisterous folks from Minnesota, visiting Massachusetts to support a Women's college Hockey team.

We were approached by the unofficial spokesperson who pointed at our guitar and fiddle and asked, "Can you really play those?"

I answered of course we can, and this is your lucky night! Not only has your party been invaded by musicians, we are an Irish band and this is St Patrick's Day! We proceeded to unpack our instruments and did a set of singalongs like Charlie on the MTA for the Boston connection.Halfway through the set our wives came into the lobby -my wife grumbled to Pete's wife, "This party is going to keep us up all night!"Pete's wife Maureen looked a little closer and exclaimed, "Hey that's Jim and Pete in the center of it all!"They joined the fray, we had the best gig of the year playing for this group of strangers from the Midwest, wonderful folks who doubtless went home with a great tale and the definition of the work "Craic!"

I had such a fantastic time on my Celtic Invasion of County Mayo. I kept a personal blog on the trip that I'll publish in the coming weeks. You can also find pictures scattered across my different profile pages.

If you're thinking of going, I think my favorite things were the cliffs on Achill Island. There were some stunning views. And my absolute favorite was Downpatrick Head. There were more stunning views, but there was a blowhole that went under the cliffs which made it interesting to see too.

Next month, I'm launching a Kickstarter for the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I'm raising money for some album pins to promote the show. I would really LOVE your support.

You can follow the Kickstarter campaign through the website.

THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST!

I got a private message from Bob on Patreon which I felt needed addressing in a public format:

"Marc: I am going to end my Patreon sponsorship of your podcast. The cursing on your podcasts irritates me and I don't think it syncs up with celebrating Irish culture nor a fun, family oriented atmosphere.

One example: the Magic Dragon podcast - - Forkroot "Coyotes at the Dump" from Water & Shade, about 20:16 mark.

So rather than me being irritated and you being irritated at my reaction, I'll wish you the best, but I sure don't get where you are going."

I did respond to Bob's comment, but I thought I'd address it here too. I did catch that explicit word in Forkroot's song. Unfortunately, I was not listening closely to songs right before I headed out on vacation. They were the type of band that I did not expect to hear foul language from. So yes, I messed up.

I am terribly sorry for anyone who had to endure the explicit language. As you should know, I do my best to keep episodes of the podcast family - friendly. And as I told Bob, if you ever hear explicit language on the show, please please email me ASAP so that I can correct that error. I rely on your generosity to help me catch these problems.

I caught the language problem a day after the show went live and removed the song from the public version of the show. I left it in the Music - Only episode on Patreon, but that song was removed, also from the Celtic Top 20.

Luke Miller said: "Hi Marc, For St. Patrick's day Kathleen and I are both taking the day off work. We are going to spend most of the day at a local Irish Pub that is having live music all day including the band Beltaine which has been on the podcast. That night we are seeing The Gothard Sisters in concert."

Bart Creedon emailed: "Hello Marc - 1. Living the life of Reilly, since I was fortunate enough to be able to retire last July. 2. I'll sport a little green, consume a little Guinness and look to stay out of too much trouble. 3. I've been listening to Delia Murphy's recordings. My curiosity was piqued having encountered a fictionalized version of her in Joseph O'Connor's "My Father's House", a novel primarily about Hugh O'Flaherty's exploits during WWII in Nazi - occupied Rome. I also discovered that Joseph O'Connor is brother to Sinead O'Connor, one of my favorite Irish singers. Thanks for asking."

DawnMarie Sharit replied: "I listen while I am doing tedious work, because it gets done so much faster, and I typically have a huge smile on my face, if not a wistful tear in my eye!"

Kelly Frenette replied to my email: "Let's see.... Of course I'd love a bonus episode! What are you doing while listening? Wood turning, resin casting or driving. I'm keeping my ancestry alive and remembering the celtic history. I always have it playing in the background while I work."
