Every-so-often, Melanie and I play a little mental exercise called "how did we get here?" We connect all the dots that lead us to this exact point...

Right now, I'm sitting in a beach-front AirBnB on a tiny island in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa...

It is a Spanish Island and the locals are out in full force enjoying the sun and the beach today... Semana Santa starts tomorrow and this will be my second time experiencing this amazing holiday week in a Spanish speaking culture...

Over lunch, I was just blown away at the fact that we've got a couple weeks in this amazing little paradise and started to connect the dots.

I'm here because I had a couple week break between two speaking gigs... And flying across the globe repeatedly is not my style.

I got these speaking gigs because of two other speakers I met at the DMSS event in Bali...

I landed the DMSS event in Bali because of a talk I gave on the Nomad Cruise a couple years ago...

Now here is where the connecting the dots game is truly amazing...

When I threw my hat in the ring for the speaking gig on the Nomad Cruise, I had no idea it would lead me here... To this moment on the Grand Canary islands!

As the path unfolds, all we can ever see is that next step...

Only when we take that next step, can we see the one after that.

But, most people are STUCK trying to see every step on the path before ever getting started!

They want to see how all the dots connect, first... But the truth is that you can only connect all the dots when looking back!

So the 'trick' to it all... Is to just start!

Get some momentum on your side and keep taking steps forward!

Not every step that lead me to this moment on this beautiful beach with crystal clear blue water was fun...

Not every step felt like it was 'progress'...

Many steps felt like they were taking me in the completely wrong direction...

But I kept going and the path that has unfolded has been absolutely amazing.

So, I ask you...

Are you taking steps forward every day?

Or... Are you 'stuck' trying to figure it all out before getting started?

Playing Music: The group spent a total of seven weeks performing at the Indra club, a German venue, notching up 172 hours of stage time over 48 nights.

"Between 1960 and 1962, the new Beatles played an estimated 281 concerts in Hamburg's notorious red light and party district, sometimes starting at 7pm and finishing at 7am. In two short years, they played more live music hours in Hamburg than anywhere else in the world in their entire career."

Then, learning about their living conditions through these years you will understand how not glamourous the hustle and grind was for them.

McCartney later said, "We lived backstage in the Bambi Kino, next to the toilets, and you could always smell them. The room had been an old storeroom, and there were just concrete walls and nothing else. No heat, no wallpaper, not a lick of paint; and two sets of bunk beds, with not very much covers—Union Jack flags—we were frozen."

Lennon remembered: "We were put in this pigsty. We were living in a toilet, like right next to the ladies' toilet. We'd go to bed late and be woken up next day by the sound of the cinema show and old German fraus [women] pissing next door."[30]

Lennon said: "It was Hamburg that did it. That's where we really developed. To get the Germans going and keep it up for twelve hours at a time we really had to hammer. We would never have developed as much if we'd stayed at home. We had to try anything that came into our heads in Hamburg. There was nobody to copy from. We played what we liked best and the Germans liked it as long as it was loud."

They played at least 4.5 hours on weekdays, 6 hours weekends, sometimes up to 12 hours per day.

Let's do a little math... If they played a minimum of 4.5 hours/show and they played 281 concerts in 2 years... That is over 1264 hours performing live they condensed into a 2 year period.

They were living in filth, playing in repulsive sounding clubs that may have doubled as strip clubs... They were getting ZERO notariety, zero press, zero accolades.

But, they honed the skill. They put in the time! They became masters of the craft!

Then, just ten days after their last Hamburg concert in 1962, the LP Please, Please Me was released and took the world by storm.

This is when they 'burst onto the scene like an overnight success' but you now realize there were YEARS of hustle and grinding it out that propeled them to becoming one of the greatest bands of all time.

The success secret? You must put in the work... Literally, thousands of hours if you want to be successful!

That, my friend, is the shortcut!

Both of these books, but Turning Pro especially, reveal the true 'secret to success' in such clear and concise language I feel that they are must-read books for anyone on an entrepreneurial path that involves internet marketing.
