In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Melissa Denny from Brighton, CO.

Gin’s new book Clean(ish) is available for preorder now! Go to ginstephens.com/cleanish to find out where to preorder today and you’ll have it the day it comes out, on January 4, 2022. In Gin's New York Times bestseller Fast. Feast. Repeat., she taught you how to fast (completely) clean as part of an intermittent fasting lifestyle. Now, whether you’re an intermittent faster or not, Gin wants to show you how to become clean(ish) where it counts:you’ll learn how to eat (mostly) clean and live (mainly) clean as you unlock your body’s natural ability to self-clean. Instead of aiming for perfection (which is impossible) or changing everything at once (which is hard, and never leads to lasting change), you’ll cut through the confusion, lose the fear, and embrace the freedom that comes from becoming clean(ish). As you learn how to lower your toxic load through small changes, smart swaps, and simple solutions, you’ll breathe a (clean) sigh of relief and embrace your own personal evolution toward becoming clean(ish).

Melissa shares that she was overweight as a child, but this was accepted in her family. Her first diet was in high school, which began years of dieting and calorie restriction.

By 2019, Melissa had reached her highest weight of 230 pounds, and she gave up. “I'll always be overweight,” she declared.

A Facebook friend shared IF with her, and added Melissa to the Delay, Don’t Deny group. Seeing all of the incredible transformations gave Melissa back the hope she had lost, and she officially began in August of 2019 with 16:8. She immediately felt so much better, and instantly knew that IF would become her lifestyle.

An avid runner, Melissa has also noticed how much energy and motivation she has for her runs as an IFer. She now feels comfortable in her body, and has gone from 230 to 173 pounds.

The advice Melissa would give to new IFers: "Find community. Read the books, and do the research."

IF is free. You don’t need to join our community to fast. But if you’re looking for support from a community of like-minded IFers, we are here for you at dddsocialnetwork.com.

Vanessa Avalos is a Community Support Specialist. In May of 2019, she was diagnosed with sleep apnea, and her doctor advised her to use a CPAP machine. At this point, Vanessa had reached her highest weight, and she knew it was time for a change.

She decided to do research on how to get healthier. Vanessa found a YouTube video about intermittent fasting, and started IF that day! She knew that IF would be something she could do for the rest of her life.

Vanessa's health has greatly improved! Her acid reflux and congestion are both gone, and she sleeps better. She has lost 66 pounds, going from 240 to 173 pounds.

The advice Vanessa would give to new IFers: "Find an IF support group. Take pictures because the scale doesn't always show progress. Don't compare your journey to others. Follow your own path."

In July of 2019, Karen began the IF lifestyle for the health benefits, though she dieted on and off for many years prior to IF.

Karen has an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto's, which is where the immune system attacks the thyroid. Constantly exhausted, and desperate to feel better, she searched for a diet that would help with her Hashimoto's. She found Dr. Jason Fung and intermittent fasting in her search.

Karen immediately began a 16:8 protocol, and within three days, she felt so much better! Within six weeks, she had lost 20 pounds. All of her doctors love IF, and support her completely. Karen has lost a total of 52 pounds, going from 218 pounds to 167 pounds.

Karen's advice to new IFers: "Be flexible. Do what feels right to you. Don't get caught in the rules...except the clean fast!"

Shannon and Cherie help run their family's surf shop, Inner Light. They started dieting together, beginning in high school, and tried countless plans over the years.

In May of 2019, Cherie decided to pray and fast once a week for a relative. A month later, she had lost weight, and knew there was something to fasting. She shared this with Shannon, and after some research, she found the IF Stories podcast. They both began IF in June of 2019. Two years later, Shannon has lost 60 pounds, going from 220 pounds to 150 pounds. Cherie has lost 30 pounds, going from 170 pounds to 130 pounds.

Cherie's knee pain and aches have disappeared. Shannon's plantar fasciitis and headaches are completely gone, and they both have a great deal of energy.

The advice they'd give to new IFers: Cherie says, "Consistency is key. Fast every day. Use an app. It gets easy." Shannon says,"Keep it simple. Don't overcomplicate it. One day, one fast at a time."

Robin works at a university lab in the Food Science Department. In the summer of 2018, Robin was diagnosed with a torn artery in her neck which resulted in several mini-strokes. She then developed a brain aneurysm. Her doctor immediately ordered her to go on bed rest for the next four months, with the warning “do not gain weight.”

That same summer, Robin's mother had her watch a talk show segment on IF. Robin's response: "IF is a fancy word for starvation."

But as she began to gain weight, Robin decided to give IF a try.

For the first several months, Robin added cream to her coffee, having no knowledge of the clean fast. Robin stumbled upon Delay, Don't Deny, and learned about the clean fast. The transition to the clean fast made the fast easy. Robin eventually moved to a morning eating window. She currently follows 20:4, with a weekly longer fast. She has lost 25 pounds, going from a size 14 to a size 6.

Robin's health has radically improved. Her brain aneurysm has healed. Her psoriasis, which covered her entire body, is now almost gone completely. She also has improved gum health after a 14-year battle with gum disease.

Robin's advice to new IFers: "Find a reason to fast that is completely independent of weight loss. Look for small victories. Be content with health benefits if you're not losing weight at first. Don't be afraid to try things that seem scary."

In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin speaks to special guest Marty Kendall from Brisbane, Australia. Marty is both an engineer and biohacker. He is the creator of Data Driven Fasting and runs the Optimising Nutrition website.

Gin and Marty have a fascinating conversation about Food Insulin Index and its importance. Marty explains how he developed Data Driven Fasting, and also how he applies it to his own life.He shares a few myths about dietary fat and Keto, and the importance of choosing nutrient-dense food when it comes to both health and satiety.

Marty found intermittent fasting after diving headfirst into the research of nutrition, insulin, and blood sugar levels to better understand his wife's Type 1 Diabetes. He came across Dr. Jason Fung's videos, and began IF in 2013. Besides helping others with their own intermittent fasting practices, he has gone from 250 pounds to 187 pounds.

Sarah found that she struggled in her relationship with food: she was either feeling guilty or deprived, no matter what she ate. Diet mindset controlled her.

Sarah first learned about IF from her dad, who is an Anesthesiologist. He shares IF with everyone who will listen, but Sarah always opposed it.

After a food-indulgent vacation in December of 2019, she finally decided to give 16:8 a try. She has lost 12 pounds, and currently follows a 21:3 protocol.

Sarah has had many non-scale victories. Her tastes have dramatically changed. She now craves all sorts of veggies and loves to cook! Her anxiety has drastically improved, as IF helps her to feel more calm.

Sarah's advice to new IFers: "The first few weeks are hard, but you'll be so glad that didn’t give up. Give IF a chance!"

Cynthia is a stay-at-home mom of two kids. She always struggled with her weight. While she was successful with diets, she would always gain back whatever she lost.

By July of 2019, Cynthia had reached her highest weight of 240 pounds and felt miserable. The turning point came for her while on a trip to New York with her husband. A woman on their Brooklyn Bridge tour had to stop because she was out of breath and could not continue. The entire group had to wait for her, and Cynthia realized she herself was on her way to the same scenario. It was time do something different.

Her doctor had suggested intermittent fasting as a way to lose weight, and Cynthia began immediately once they returned. Cynthia found the Delay, Don't Deny Facebook group and listened to the Intermittent Fasting Stories podcast. Hearing the success of others was very motivating for Cynthia. She began with a 16:8 protocol, gradually moving to 18:6. Cynthia has lost an astounding 110 pounds!!

The health benefits Cynthia has experienced: improved sleep, her joints no longer ache, she has sustained energy throughout the day, and her allergies have improved.

Cynthia's advice to new IFers: "Give yourself time to try it. IF is going to take time. Don't just try it for a few days. It's a process, not a sprint. Tweak things if you're not losing. And remember: IF is not always about weight loss."

Beth is a moderator in the Delay, Don't Deny Facebook group, and is currently attending school to become a health coach.

Beth struggled with her weight after having her now-grown children. She yo-yo dieted for many years, counting calories, trying various diets, and maintaining a vigorous exercise routine. She would lose weight easily, but could never maintain the loss.

By July of 2019, Beth was about to give up. Discouraged, she heard about intermittent fasting from a friend. At first, Beth thought it sounded crazy, but she decided to give it a shot. She eased her way into IF, and never had a set window. Varying her fasts has made IF feel like a flexible lifestyle. Beth has lost 35 pounds, and easily maintains within a comfortable weight range. Her relationship with food has completely changed. She no longer obsessed with food, and it no longer controls her.

Beth's advice for new IFers: "While you want to be consistent overall, it's okay to switch things up. You don't have to have the same schedule every day, because this is a lifestyle."
