    Show notes

    The Future of Social Media

Brenden and Billy discuss the current landscape of social media and consider how it will evolve in the future. They also explore interesting ways through which we can spot trends, the future of social media, the method that Gary V uses to spot trends, and much more.

    What we discussed:

    • [02:13] - The future of social media
    • [03:47] - How to predict trends
    • [06:14] - Why do Instagram reels have so much organic reach?
    • [08:10] - Who should we pay attention to for spotting social media trends
    • [10:33] - What Brenden thinks Gary V is paying attention to
    • [11:14] - A good way to spot trends is to focus on the younger generation
    • [14:46] - Brenden's advice to the listeners
    • [16:23] - Being active on social media versus owning your platform
    • [22:14] - How Gary V can spot trends
    • [23:44] - How should we divide our time on social media platforms?
    • [28:58] - The biggest upcoming changes on social media
    • [32:48] - Practical ways for people to find an audience before others do
    • [35:03] - Brenden's advice to people who have shiny object syndrome
    • [37:59] - Figure out what you can sustainably do as a content creator
    • [39:10] - What can content creators do to establish their domain expertise?

    Valuable Insights:

    • It doesn't matter what social platform you are on. The equity of who you are is always going to percolate across each platform.
    • At any moment in time, social media platforms will always change except for one thing, which is who you are, how you communicate, and how you use those skills across multiple platforms.
    • An easy way to predict trends is to always look at the companies and the people running the social platforms.
    • It's always important to understand the new upcoming platforms that are taking the storm and how we can jump on the right platforms at the right time, build up enough traction and then move those audiences in a permanent way where we always have access to them.
    • To spot social media trends, pay attention to venture capitalists investing in companies. By focusing on those companies and seeing who's getting the big checks, you can see whether or not something is working.
    • Every social media platform except Linkedin started with the young generation, and then mature people joined it.
    • Young people are just more accustomed to trying new things, and they don't want to be where all the older people are.
    • The advantage of being on social media platforms is you can scale up your phone quickly and reach a lot of lives. But the disadvantage is you don't have control.
    • It's a lot easier to create content on LinkedIn than it is on other platforms like YouTube.
    • Build either a blog, a podcast, or a YouTube channel, whatever you're comfortable with, and make sure that everything you're doing on social media is growing one of these three mediums.

    • Whoever can spot the trends earlier and react fast will put themselves in a position to win.

    Notable Quotes:

    • [01:57] - "Social media is the vehicle to allow creative endeavors to be visible."

    • [27:47] - "You don't need to do it all. It's good to have a mix, but figure out what you like doing the most because that's what you're going to do the most."
    • [35:58] - "Study the winners, understand what the winners do, and copy those people."
