National Data Centre Day: Building a Unified Message for the Industry Sep 12, 2025

Andy Davis is joined by co-host Rory Flashman, MD at Spa Communications, for a special episode marking the first-ever National Data Centre Day.

Together they explore why the industry urgently needs a unified message – and how collaboration can transform the public perception of datacentres.

It's our final edition on the Inside Data Centre Podcast at Datacloud Global Congress, Cannes 2025!

Our hosts, Andy Davis and Rory Flashman, are joined by Annabel Helm, Managing Director of Datacloud (techoraco), and Lex Coors, Chief Data Centre Technology and Engineering Officer at Digital Realty and President at EUDCA, to celebrate the final day at the three-day event! From the foundation of organisation, researching speakers and adapting to quick changes, this episode highlights the success of the event, with 45% more people joining the conversation than last year, and 12,000 data centre representatives attending. They discuss why the industry return to the event every year – growth and getting ahead of the curve, especially with regards to talent, helps to inspire the next generation, and a different sense of perception of the industry (colouring is the new hobby!)

Some key advice from Lex Coors on being in the sector:

“Make sure you develop yourself and people around you and with you, and also this will be the core of the industry where people will have the knowledge, the title and are seen by that title”.

In this episode I interview some of the leaders, students, and sponsors of the UTC Heathrow Digital Futures Programme. An education programme developed to help manage the skills challenge in the data centre sector.

Chad Harris, Whinstone Data Centers: Building a 700MW Bitcoin Mining Data Center Dec 03, 2021

In this episode I am joined by Chad Harris, CEO of Whinstone Data Centers. Chad leads the team building North Americas single largest Bitcoin mining and hosting data center, based in Rockdale Texas.
Chad is a serial entrepreneur and we discuss how his extensive career in business resulted in the creation of Whinstone Data Centers. Chad also shares some insight on why entrepreneurs have that innate drive to be successful.
We then cover Whinstone Data Centres, how they were created, what they do, why the facility is different from a standard data centre, and how the company has evolved since they were acquired by Riot Blockchain. You can hear the passion in Chad's voice when he talks about the company, there is no doubt big things are on the horizon for Riot Whinstone!
Finally we talk about the impact the facility has had on the wider community. Chad shares some stories of some of the amazing work they have done to improve the life of everyone within Rockdale.

'Going for Growth' has the ambitious target of doubling revenue and creating 150 jobs by 2025. We discuss how Ethos will achieve these targets and the importance of retention, attraction and learning & development.
Greg paints a great picture of Ethos Engineering and it is certainly a company that puts its employees at its core. It feels like the next stage of their journey is only just beginning..

Todd Murren - Bluebird Networks: An Undergound Data Centre May 26, 2021

In this episode of the Hot Topics series I am joined by Todd Murren, General Manager at BlueBird Underground, a 6MW Bluebird Networks underground data center located in Missouri, US.
The Bluebird Underground data center is located 85 feet underground in a disused mine. 100% of the critical systems are located underground and the facility is built to N+1 standards. They have recently undertaken a 10000 sqft extension to meet increased demand.
Todd discusses the benefits and challenges of being located underground and why customers look to Bluebird Underground for network services.
We also discuss why Bluebird chose an underground location, the geological and meteorological challenges offered by an underground location, the cooling benefits of being underground, and how the environment impacts on the data centers operation.

Mike had an eventful start to life which included being shot at in South Africa and living in a squat with his family in London. At the age of 16 Mike was accepted onto an apprenticeship scheme which was the start of a highly successful career in engineering and eventually within the data centre sector.
We discuss how Mike became CEO of Redbus at a time when the company was in financial difficulty. Following some good fortune, many boardroom bust-ups and a lot of hard work Redbus became TeleCity and Mike took the business to a £2bn+ turnover company.
We also talk about luck, what makes a great leader, and the importance of building great teams and surrounding yourself with the best people.
Mike is now involved in a non-exec capacity for many businesses across the world and he has an excellent view of the global data centre industry.

Ed Galvin - Providing the Data in Data Centres Feb 12, 2021

In this episode I am joined by Ed Galvin, CEO of DC Byte. Ed has a background in data centre real estate and a gap in the market resulted in Ed creating the Data Centre Analytical platform, DC Byte.
We discuss how Ed was once planning on training as a chef but opted for studying theology at university and then an MA in property at Cass Business School. After starting his career in the commercial property market Ed then made the move to CBRE and entered the world of data centres. After seeing a gap in the market for a more consultative approve Ed established an advisory consultancy and then went on to create and launch the analytics platform DC Byte.
We then discuss DC Byte and how the platform has changed the face of data centre research and analytics. We discuss the trends in the market, such as the geography of new developments, FLAP or FLAD, sustainability and power demand.
We even touch on Starlink and how advances in technology will influence the data centre market in the future.
Ed has a great holistic view of the industry and is clearly passionate about the sector. It is great listen!

Guy Willner - Educated risk taking in emerging markets. Feb 05, 2021

In this episode I am joined by Guy Willner, CEO and Chairman of IXcellerate and IXAfrica. Guy has had an amazing career in the data centre industry having developed a number of DC organisations across various regions.
An interest in cars and engineering resulted in Guy taking a degree in engineering in the UK and following a few years of working in Cable TV Guy established IXEurope with a business partner. After securing major funding they went on to develop a highly successful data centre organisation that was acquired by Equinix. Guy then went on to hold senior roles within Equinix, Teraco, and various other data centre organisations.
After an opportunity presented itself Guy established IXcellerate in Russia which is now the 2nd largest data centre platform in Russia. We discuss the challenges of developing a company in Russia and the future plans for the company.
We also discuss the challenges faced by the industry today and how we can manage these challenges as the industry rapidly expands.

Over 15 years he has progressed from engineer to director and is now responsible for driving and developing the company. We discuss how having exposure to a number of roles in the company has helped develop a rounded view of the industry and how you need to take the opportunities that present themselves when looking to develop your career.
We then discuss the Keysource state of industry report and how 2020 has reshaped the data centre industry. We discuss the drivers for growth in the industry, the challenges faced as it expands, and how the industry will be shaped in 2021 and beyond.
