Infertile AF: Infertility and Modern Family Building through ART

Unfiltered, honest, and deeply human—Infertile AF is the podcast that tells the real stories behind infertility and modern family building. Hosted by journalist, Fertility Rally co-founder, "Work of ART" books author and mom-of-two Ali Prato, who went through secondary infertility and IVF herself, the show dives into the messy, frustrating, painful, heartbreaking, absurd, and sometimes even funny realities of trying to have a baby—or pivoting in a different direction.

Each episode spotlights a different journey, path or topic, covering everything from miscarriages, egg freezing, sperm and egg donation, IUIs, IVF, endometriosis, and male factor infertility to adoption, surrogacy, genetic testing, termination for medical reasons, single parenting by choice, LGBTQ+ family building, living childless not by choice, depression, relationship struggles, financial stress, jealousy, PTSD, trauma and beyond.

In this safe, non-judgmental space, Ali explores all the outcomes: the joyful, the soul-crushing, and the stories still unfolding. Infertile AF is here to remind you that no matter where you are on your journey, you’re not alone.

Infertility warrior, endurance athlete and "Secrets of Giants" author Alyssa Ages Dec 17, 2023
    Show notes

Alyssa is a mom of two, a strongman competitor, an endurance athlete, a rock climber, and a CrossFitter -- and today, she shares her family building and infertility journey. Alyssa talks about miscarriage and chemical pregnancy, what she knew about her fertility growing up, and why she is on a "soapbox" now to encourage women to talk and learn about their own fertility, and to advocate for themselves. Alyssa shares how it felt to get pregnant after loss, and she also talks about her book, "Secrets of Giants," which uncovers why physical strength matters, and how it teaches us that we’re capable of so much more than we know. Fun fact: Alyssa has pulled a 50-ton truck, and she talks about that too.

She tells Ali all about her seven year-long journey, which began when she found out at age 34 that she was in premenopause. Part Two: Kristyn Hodgdon, co-founder of Rescripted Nov 18, 2023
    Show notes

When we last talked to Kristyn, in January 2020, she shared how "nothing on the road to motherhood was easy" for her, from the "Clomid crazies" to her first failed frozen embryo transfer. At the time, her IVF twins were toddlers. Today, her twins are five years old, and Kristyn fills us in on what's happened since our last podcast episode, including two more years of fertility treatments. "In total, I did five embryo transfers over two years," she says. "Two losses and three that didn't implant at all. I just can't believe I'm here. I was so sure two years ago that we were gonna have three kids. Now I'm in this limbo period where I don't know what to do next." In addition to her family building journey, Kristyn shares how she pivoted from founding The Fertility Tribe to co-founding Rescripted, which covers women's health and wellness from first period to last period.

Inspiro Tequila Founder and IVF mama Mara Smith Nov 08, 2023
    Show notes

Today, Mara Smith joins Ali on the show to talk about her family building journey, which includes her diagnosis of PCOS, and what it was like to do IVF 20-plus years ago. (Her IVF twins are now in college.) Mara shares how it was a very lonely experience more than two decades ago, since not really anyone was talking about it. She also talks about PPROM (Preterm premature rupture of the membranes -- a pregnancy complication she faced), NICU life with her newborn twins, and what happened when she and her husband decided that after their twins were born, they were not yet finished building their family.
