    Episode 328 - Good Time Dec 22, 2017
    Show notes

This movie is a good time, if you're a cinephile. If not, you might be put off. Not enough people are talking about The Safdie Brothers' film, which was snubbed by the Golden Globes yet named Best Movie of 2017 by Film Comment. Listen to Andrew and Phil gush about the immersive experience of watching this kinetic film.

Episode 327 - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri Dec 20, 2017
    Show notes

A strong contender for awards in the writing category, Martin McDonagh's seething satire about the American South is also a powerhouse of a film. Great performances and strong direction abound with surefire nominations for Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell. Phil liked the film but felt it was a fairly obvious attempt to make a point about Southerners without quite capturing what life is like there. Andrew admired how well-crafted it was, and loved the acting. Will this end up being on their end of year top ten list?

    Episode 326 - Coco Dec 18, 2017
    Show notes

We're loco for Coco! Dazzling animation from Pixar, always pushing the limits of what's possible. A truly heartwarming story that elicited tears from the audience. Andrew and Phil praise the premise of a Mexican-set film and also address the uproar regarding the lengthy short about Olaf the snowman that has been pulled from theaters.

    Episode 325 - The Killing of a Sacred Deer Dec 14, 2017
    Show notes

Is nothing sacred? Nope, not even Bambi. The title of Yorgos Lanthimos' captivating ode to discomfort refers to an ancient Greek myth. But there's nothing antiquated about this brilliant, nerve-rattling modern horror. Andrew and Phil both loved this film, perhaps a spiritual cousin to Aronofsky's mother!, but utterly unique. The hosts of ITQ draw comparisons to Kubrick and Haneke, which bodes well for Lanthimos' future body of work!

    Show notes

Andrew and Phil invite one of their old friends from film school to talk about his new horror-comedy MERCY CHRISTMAS, now available for download:(iTunes, Amazon). Ryan Nelson wrote and directed the movie, which took several years to produce. The story deals with a put-upon office worker who gets invited to a Christmas party by a beautiful co-worker that he just met. It seems like good fortune at first, but things are not what they seem. Brutal, funny and sure to entertain fans of the genre, MERCY CHRISTMAS (http://www.mercychristmasmovie.com/) is out just in time for the holidays. Episode 323 - The Square Dec 05, 2017
    Show notes

Art is such a serious topic, it makes a perfect target for satire. Ruben Östlund tackles the hypocrisy of that world in his critically-acclaimed drama THE SQUARE. Andrew and Phil are both huge fans of his previous film, FORCE MAJEURE, which is also a humorous takedown of a ridiculous man. But the female characters in the film are not as sharply drawn as in Östlund's previous effort. If you are skeptical of contemporary art and are intrigued by the accolades this film is getting, this film gets the endorsement from ITQ.

    Episode 322 - Desierto *Listener's Choice* Nov 27, 2017
    Show notes

Jonás Cuarón follows in his father's footsteps as director of this tense thriller set entirely in the well, desert. A group of Latinos are crossing the Mexican border into the U.S. and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, for one, doesn't like it one bit. This psychotic super-patriot starts to pick off the travelers one-by-one with his sniper rifle, leaving Gael Garcia Bernal to act the hero and try to make sure all of his compatriots make it to safety. Andrew points out this politically-charged nail-biter has the anatomy of a horror film. Phil considers it an extrapolation of some footnote in No Country For Old Men. Returning guest, Eric brings this film to ITQ.

    Episode 321 - Lady Bird Nov 20, 2017
    Show notes

A film that weaves together an entire community of resonant characters, all tethered together by the star, Christine 'Lady Bird' McPherson (the indomitable Saoirse Ronan). Greta Gerwig's directorial debut is getting a lot of praise, and rightly so. She also wrote the script and it pulsates with real situations to the point that it seems wholly autobiographical. Andrew and Phil both loved it. Another direct hit from A24, who are putting all other film distributors to shame with their consistently stellar releases.

Episode 320 - Sexual Predators in Hollywood *Filmmaker Interview* Nov 13, 2017
    Show notes

In this rare episode, ITQ welcomes Deirdre Haj, an actress and producer who began a career in Hollywood in 1984. In this extremely frank and candid interview, Deirdre fields questions about rape culture in the entertainment industry, recounting what she witnessed before leaving Los Angeles a number of years ago. Deirdre pulls no punches in her assessment that Hollywood is a hostile place for women. The root of the cause, Haj explains is not only that people with a hunger for power often find their way to the industry...but the industry itself reflects society.

    Episode 319 - The Foreigner Nov 09, 2017
    Show notes

Andrew and Phil spar over the relative merits of this popcorn flick. Should there be more Jackie Chan? Does it really deserve its abysmal Metascore? The Foreigner was billed as a Jackie Chan movie, although he's overshadowed by Pierce Brosnan's prodigious turn as Liam Hennessey, the Irish government official with a checkered past. Phil wanted more Jackie, while Andrew contends that the martial arts legend simply doesn't have the energy to dazzle like he used to. But Chan is such a likable presence he could do almost anything and his fans would be pleased.
