Treat Yo' Self with Dr. Julie Colwell Dec 19, 2022
    Show notes

WHAT DOES A RETURN TO SELF ACTUALLY MEAN?

As women in perimenopause, we are still very much in the veil of hormones and feeling ALL the feelings. The problem with that is that we live in a culture that expects (demands?) us to push anything perceived as negative, challenging, or hysterical down and present happy to the world. In the thick of the most wonderful time of year, how can we access more peace?

During times of upheaval, people need powerful tools and support based in wisdom and expansiveness in order to thrive. Advances led by neuroscience and the plethora of present-day revolutionary thinkers are making these tools broadly available. In this show, we’re joined by an expert who brings together science and wisdom to support us on a path of embodying the power we need to live the biggest life we can. Spoiler alert, she’s also Amanda’s couple’s therapist!
    Guest: Dr. Julia Colwell, Ph.D

Has spent nearly three decades and thousands of hours with individuals, couples, and groups, exploring the world of relationships. Moving out of the world of traditional talk therapy into a body-centered focus, she's fine-tuned a style that is at once direct, respectful, gentle, confrontational, and loving, co-creating personal and relationship transformation. She is the founder of the Boulder Center for Conscious Community and teaches a variety of classes, groups, and workshops, along with being in private practice in Boulder. She has kitchen-tested everything she teaches in her own amazing twenty-three year relationship.

How did we get here? Dr. Kristen Hawkes and Jennifer Nadel Dec 19, 2022
    Show notes

In our first live talk show, we welcome you to consider two alternative lenses to view menopause: the anthropical and the psycho-societal.
There’s a reason why no one we know is talking about menopause. With more context around why menopause happens to humans with ovaries and the culture that stigmatizes women’s aging, we can reclaim choice and power in our own lives.

Kristen Hawkes is a Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at the University of Utah. Her primary areas of expertise are Cultural Anthropology, Life History, Sociobiology.

Jennifer Nadel is a qualified barrister, author, speaker, campaigner, award-winning journalist and women's rights campaigner. Her investigative report from Bosnia for ITV showed that rape was being used as a weapon of war by the Serbs. It was later used by UN War Crimes investigators. Her most recent book, co-authored with Gillian Anderson, explores women's rights.

Women are not small men with Dr. Stacy Sims Dec 13, 2022
    Show notes

WHAT CAN WE DO TO MANAGE BELLY FAT, TRAIN OPTIMALLY, AND EAT TO NOURISH AND THRIVE THROUGH PERIMENOPAUSE?

When it comes to exercise, nutrition and medicine, it has long been assumed that women are just smaller versions of men. Very little research has been done specifically on women in these areas and during menopause specifically. This seems crazy given that women make up about 50% of the population and 50% of the population will experience menopause.! This lack of science-based information often means women are doing the wrong training, eating the wrong food, not reaching their full potential, and/or suffering unnecessary discomfort and pain.

Stacy’s mission is to help women better understand their bodies and elevate them in research, science, sport, and, ultimately, in life.
Stacy Sims, MSC, PHD, is an international exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist, clinician, author, coach, athlete, whoop advisor, entrepreneur in human performance and mum. Her research contributions have established her reputation as the expert in sex differences in training, nutrition, and health. She currently resides at the beach in Mt. Maunganui, New Zealand, with her husband and young daughter.

    She has been named:

    • One of the top 50 visionaries of the running industry (2015) by DMSE Sports.
    • One of the top 40 women changing the paradigm of her field (2017) by Outside Magazine.
    • One of the top four visionaries in the outdoor sports industry (2017) by Outside Magazine - Genius Issue (no electronic version but here is the proof).
    • One of the top four individuals changing the landscape in triathlon nutrition (2017) by Triathlete Magazine

The Mystery of the Ovaries with Dr. Jennifer Garrison and Dr. Deena Emera from the Buck Institute Nov 08, 2022
    Show notes

In this talk show we're pulling back the curtain on one of the great mysteries in women's health. Menopause doesn't have to be scary if we understand everything we can about one of our most vital organs - the Ovaries.
Please join our friends Jennifer Garrison and Deena Emera from the Buck Institute for our live talk show this Wednesday.
Jennifer Garrison is an assistant professor at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and also holds appointments in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and the Davis School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California. She is also the Co-Founder & Director, Global Consortium for Reproductive Longevity & Equality.

Deena Emera is a Senior Scientist and Writer-in-Residence in the Center for Reproductive Longevity and Equality at the Buck Institute, where she is drawing on her evolutionary background and expertise on female reproduction to investigate the evolution of menopause. She also continues working with students, teaching a science-writing course at Dominican University. Her book A Modern Guide to the Female Body will be published in the spring of 2023.
