How Can You Teach Giving Advice and Correct Errors at the Right Time? – S05E08 May 10, 2024
    Show notes

How can learners move beyond “You should” when giving advice in English? And when should a teacher correct an error immediately rather than wait until later?

Gav and Em share practical TEFL activities for teaching advice and indirect questions while exploring the quick classroom decisions teachers make during speaking practice. Gav demonstrates two adaptable activities that encourage learners to use phrases such as “If I were you…” “Have you considered…?” and “Why don’t you…?”

They also discuss how to manage a distracted student who repeats a question how to prevent one learner’s long answer from taking over an activity and why interrupting an apparent error too quickly can sometimes confuse everyone.

Elsewhere Em explains how she combines online English teaching with travelling. She covers budgeting transport accommodation reliable Wi-Fi and the importance of finding a quiet workspace. Gav and Em also wonder why some learners appear more fluent and confident after taking a break from lessons.

Whether you teach English online or in person this episode offers realistic activities and an honest look at classroom management error correction and speaking practice drawn from Gav and Em’s own teaching experience.

How Can Revision, Simple Explanations and Games Improve English Lessons? – S05E07 Apr 26, 2024
    Show notes

How can revision help learners remember vocabulary, and what can teachers do when students arrive tired or lessons begin to feel repetitive?

In this episode, Gav and Em share practical English teaching and learning tips drawn from their own classrooms. They explore how conversations, personal connections, emotional responses and simple keywords can make new vocabulary more memorable. They also consider whether teaching easily confused words together can create unnecessary problems.

What should you do when students have no energy? Gav and Em discuss starting slowly, using your own enthusiasm, introducing music or video, getting learners moving and adapting online lessons so students become active participants again.

You’ll also hear how random discussion questions can freshen up long-running courses and give learners more autonomy. Em’s attempt to elicit the words columns and rows leads instead to “pillars and paddles” and a useful conversation about when elicitation works, when it fails and when teachers should simply provide the answer.

The episode finishes with a classroom-friendly Family Feud quiz. It demonstrates how survey questions can generate vocabulary, synonyms, collocations and practice with phrasal verbs such as break down.

What Do Students Want to Ask Their English Teachers? – S04E26 Dec 29, 2023
    Show notes

What have your students always wanted to know about you and your teaching?

For the final episode of Season 4, Gav and Em answer questions submitted by their English learners. They discuss how teachers motivate students, prepare lessons, manage mistakes and cope when a class does not go according to plan.

What does a typical day look like for an online TEFL teacher? Have Gav and Em ever stopped teaching a student—or been dropped by one? They share memorable classroom experiences, unusual colleagues, strange teaching locations and lessons they would rather forget.

The questions also lead to a thoughtful discussion about what makes language learning successful. Gav, Em and guest teacher Charlotte consider the responsibilities of both teachers and students, while Teacher Sergio explains how a positive and relevant learning environment supports motivation. Teacher Tsar shares his lesson-planning approach and stories from teaching English to soldiers in Colombia.

You will also hear practical advice for becoming a more successful English learner: connect English with something you already enjoy, participate actively and keep using the language you learn outside class.

How Can Drawing and Sketchnoting Improve English Lessons? With Emily Bryson – S04E25 Dec 15, 2023
    Show notes

How can a few simple drawings get English learners talking? Gav and Em explore visual teaching with Emily Bryson from Emily Bryson ELT. Together, they try a mountain template, fill a vocabulary container and discover how sketchnotes can capture ideas without recording every word.

Emily explains why teachers do not need to be talented artists. A small visual vocabulary of lines, arrows, shapes and simple figures can help organise a discussion. Em draws a mountain to explore Gav’s bread-making challenges, then a flour bag that becomes a place to collect ingredients and useful language. They also consider how learners can combine keywords, icons and connections in their own sketchnotes.
