How to Correct English Mistakes Without Killing Confidence | Error Correction for Teachers & Learners - S01E07 Feb 28, 2020
    Show notes

How should English teachers correct mistakes, and how can learners stop repeating the same errors?

In this episode of How to English TEFL Podcast, we explore correction that helps learners improve while keeping the conversation flowing.

We compare instant and delayed correction and share techniques using questioning intonation, gestures, facial expressions and correction slips. We also discuss error logs, revision activities and whether buzzers or whistles help students notice mistakes or simply make them feel uncomfortable!

Correction isn’t only the teacher’s responsibility. We look at how learners can choose a language focus before a lesson, deliberately practise new vocabulary and pronunciation, and take more ownership of recurring errors.

Join Gav and Em for practical ideas about when to interrupt, when to wait and how to turn mistakes into useful learning opportunities. Teaching something once is rarely the end of the job!

Making Mistakes (Part Two): Why English Learners Get It Wrong - S01E06 Feb 21, 2020
    Show notes

Why do English learners make the mistakes they do, and why do some errors keep coming back?

In Part Two of Making Mistakes, we turn our attention to the learner. We explore how a first language can influence English, why understandable sentences don’t always sound natural, and where teachers can begin when almost everything seems to need correcting.

We discuss contractions, connected speech, overly formal language, false friends and pronunciation problems. There are also confusing coffees and waters, irregular plurals and the familiar frustration of learning an English rule only to discover its exceptions!

Why can progress feel harder at B1 and B2? Should teachers correct every error? And why learn the word mushroom if you can’t stand mushrooms? Ordering dinner might give you a good reason.

Join Gav and Em for classroom stories, practical observations and a reminder that making mistakes is part of learning. After two episodes exploring errors, there’s one question left: how should we correct them?

Teachers' Biggest English Teaching Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them!) - S01E05 Feb 14, 2020
    Show notes

Every teacher makes mistakes. Some teach us a lesson; others leave us trying to remove permanent marker from a whiteboard!

In this episode of How to English TEFL Podcast, we share classroom mishaps and explore what we can learn from them. From forgetting lessons and arriving at the wrong location to teaching incorrect English, we discuss how to recover, be honest with learners and prepare better next time.

We also look at mistakes that are less obvious: talking too much, answering our own questions too quickly, choosing unhelpful pairings and correcting so often that students lose confidence.

Join Gav and Em for funny stories, differing opinions and practical ideas for teachers and learners. This is Part 1 of our discussion on mistakes. In Part 2, we explore correction and how students can learn from their errors.

How to Plan Better English Lessons | TEFL Lesson Planning & Teaching Tips for ESL Teachers - S01E03 Jan 31, 2020
    Show notes

How do experienced English teachers plan lessons that actually work?

In S01E03 of the How to English TEFL Podcast, we explore lesson planning, course planning and how to keep preparation time manageable.

Em enjoys having a structured plan, while Gav prefers responding to the language that emerges in conversation. We compare our approaches and discuss how both can help learners progress.

We look at identifying student goals, using teacher’s books, adapting coursebook activities and deciding when learners need grammar explanations or simply more speaking practice. We also explore conversation-led teaching, planning vocabulary and grammar lessons, and building a flexible course around learners’ needs.

If you’ve ever spent hours preparing an activity that lasted five minutes, this discussion is for you! We share what experience has taught us about reusing materials, staying prepared and giving ourselves permission to stop over-planning.

What Should Happen in Your First English Lesson? Practical TEFL Tips for Teachers & Students – S01E01 Jan 18, 2020
    Show notes

What should you actually do in your first English lesson? How much should you prepare, what questions should you ask, and how can you help everyone feel comfortable?

Welcome to the first episode of How to English TEFL Podcast with Gav and Em! We’re two EFL teachers sharing honest experiences of teaching and learning English as a foreign language.

We discuss first-lesson nerves, preparation for groups and one-to-one lessons, icebreakers, remembering names, assessing English levels and understanding students’ goals. Gav recalls an awkward question activity, while Em shares how late arrivals turned introductions into a memorable repetition exercise.

We also ask how much teachers should share about themselves and whether every first lesson needs a specific language point. For students, we offer practical ways to prepare, ask questions and take useful notes.
