How Can English Teachers Practise Better Self-Care? Wellbeing, Workload & Boundaries - S01E28 Jul 24, 2020
    Show notes

How can we look after ourselves when teaching takes up so much of the day?

In this episode of How to English TEFL Podcast, we compare the routines that help us keep teaching enjoyable and manageable. Em prefers a predictable timetable and a short break between online learners. Gav likes clustering lessons so there is more free time afterwards. We agree that meals and time to stop deserve a place in the calendar.

We also discuss working from a small home, wanting quiet after teaching, personal social-media boundaries, the value and cost of training, and reusing good lessons for different groups. Em explains how moving her kitchen table helps her switch between work and home. Gav suggests adapting a strong lesson instead of starting from scratch for every class.

    Questions answered:
    • How can teachers switch off without a separate office?
    • Is it okay to want quiet after teaching all day?
    • Should teachers add students to personal social media?
    • How can we balance training with personal time?
    • How can we reuse lessons while meeting different learners’ needs?

How Should English Teachers Handle Offensive or Outdated Language in Class? | Politically Correct English - S01E27 Jul 17, 2020
    Show notes

What should an English teacher do when a student uses a word that sounds offensive, outdated or insensitive — especially when the learner has no idea there is a problem?

In this episode of How to English TEFL Podcast, Gav and Em explore politically correct, sensitive and inclusive language from a practical teacher’s point of view. Rather than simply telling learners that a word is “wrong”, they discuss how teachers can explain context, offer alternatives and turn potentially awkward moments into useful conversations about how English is actually used.

They look at outdated and potentially ableist vocabulary, everyday expressions connected with disability and mental health, gender stereotypes in teaching materials, singular “they”, assumptions about gender, labels such as “ladies”, “girls” and “guys”, and the cultural differences that can make apparently polite English sound very different to different people.

Gav and Em also discuss why teachers need to keep reviewing their own language, what to do when students disagree with changing language conventions, and why authentic recordings may be a better choice than imitating accents in class.

It’s a thoughtful and sometimes humorous conversation about an area of English teaching where there often isn’t one simple rule — and where teachers are learning and adapting too.

Stuck at B1 or B2? How English Learners Can Break Through to the Next Language Level – S01E24 Jun 26, 2020
    Show notes

Why do English learners sometimes feel stuck, and what can teachers and students do to get progress moving again?

In this episode of How to English TEFL Podcast, Gav and Em explore three common kinds of getting stuck: when a learner stops understanding during a lesson, when progress seems to slow at intermediate levels such as B1 or B2, and when communication breaks down in a real-world situation.

Drawing on more than 40 years of combined English-teaching experience across Europe and Asia, Gav and Em share practical strategies they have used with real learners.

What should a teacher do when an explanation simply isn’t working? Gav suggests reformulating the language, trying synonyms, changing the example, writing it down or putting the language into a clearer context. Em and Gav discuss using pictures, demonstrations, timelines, stories and memorable associations to make difficult vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation easier to understand and remember.

They also look at the English-learning plateau. Progress from B1 to B2 or B2 to C1 can feel much slower than progress at beginner levels. Gav and Em discuss setting specific goals, increasing exposure to English, using self-study materials alongside real language production, and giving learners challenges such as presentations, conversation groups or other situations where they actually need to use English.

Finally, what happens when you understand almost nothing someone says in a café, hotel, restaurant, conference or phone call? Gav and Em share communication strategies including preparing likely questions in advance, asking someone to repeat or rephrase, repeating back what you think you heard, focusing on the words you do understand and simply admitting when you haven’t understood.

Whether you teach English or you are trying to move your own English to the next level, this episode offers practical ways to deal with confusion, language-learning plateaus and those uncomfortable moments when communication suddenly stops working.

How Do You Teach English at Different Levels? From Beginners to Advanced Learners - S01E23 Jun 19, 2020
    Show notes

How should English teachers adapt their lessons for beginner, intermediate and advanced learners?

Teaching an A1 beginner can feel completely different from teaching a confident B2 or C1 learner. In S01E23 of the How to English TEFL Podcast, we explore how our lessons change as students progress.

We discuss clear instructions, classroom routines, drilling, coursebooks and games for beginners, the moment pre-intermediate learners start having real conversations, and the frustrating B1/B2 learning plateau.

At advanced levels, we look at choosing interesting authentic materials, teaching nuance without patronising learners, and helping students decide whether to keep improving or maintain their current level. We also explore motivation, self-study and exams.

Why Become an English Teacher? And Why Learn English? How to English TEFL Podcast - S01E20 May 29, 2020
    Show notes

What’s so great about teaching and learning English? A lot, actually!

In S01E20 of How to English TEFL Podcast, we focus on the positives: travelling, experiencing different cultures, meeting fascinating people and watching learners grow in confidence.

With more than 40 years of combined teaching experience, we share how English lessons have taken us behind the scenes in banks, airports and museums. Em explains why learning from students feels like being paid to explore new worlds, while Gav reflects on the variety that keeps him excited about teaching.

For learners, the rewards can be just as meaningful: following conversations, understanding films, reading books in their original language and finally putting that hard-earned English into practice.

We also discuss stepping outside your comfort zone, how teaching changed Em’s confidence, and the freedom to experiment with classroom ideas. Em celebrates creativity, while Gav asks whether every teacher and learner wants to be creative.

Plus, there are muffins, gifts from students, our different versions of Christmas Pass the Parcel, Gav’s international online lessons and Em’s childhood Mr Benn dream!

Whether you’re an English teacher, TEFL trainee or English learner, join us for a celebration of what makes teaching and learning worthwhile.
