How Can Prefixes and Student Mistakes Improve English Lessons? – S05E18 Sep 27, 2024
    Show notes

How can English teachers explain prefixes clearly, experience classroom tasks from a learner’s perspective and correct memorable mistakes sensitively?

This week, we explore the prefix under- and compare words such as undercooked and uncooked, underqualified and disqualified, and underreport and misreport. These examples reveal how changing a prefix can completely alter a word’s meaning.

Em becomes a student by completing a challenging listening and note-taking task alongside her class. This raises some useful questions for teachers: Should learners hear a recording more than once? How much thinking time do they need before feedback? When should a detailed listening task be paused?

We discuss the value of attempting your own classroom activities, allowing silence after listening and using transcripts to examine unfamiliar language such as habitually late.

Gav then shares genuine learner errors from his recent lessons. We consider the differences between tall and high, bad and badly, hair and hairs, anybody and everybody, and do sport and make sport. We also explore why learners might say I feel myself happy, the responsible person or I’m looking for the TV.

In What Would Gav Do?, Em asks how a teacher could handle an unidentified student repeatedly yawning during an online lesson—and how to stop a talkative learner politely when the class has already run over time.

Finally, test your knowledge of Greek and Latin roots and prefixes in the Quiz of the Week, featuring auto, mono, micro and pan. Can you work out how these roots contribute to words including autoimmune, monogram, micromanagement and pandemonium?

Drawing on our everyday experience teaching English online and in the classroom, we share practical ideas, honest reactions and language explanations for teachers and learners.

How Can Teachers Adapt Materials and Fix Pronunciation Problems? – S05E17 Sep 13, 2024
    Show notes

How can English teachers adapt textbook materials for different learners, lesson formats and time limits? What can we do when students repeatedly mispronounce everyday words?

In this episode of How to English TEFL Podcast, Gav and Em explore TH sounds, silent letters, word stress and tricky words including bush, opposite, choir, clothes and wander. They discuss memorable sentences, visual prompts and games, while Em tests Gav on overview, oversee, oversight, overlook and overhear.

They also consider turning coursebook exercises into conversations, sharing different online tasks and adapting one text for mixed-level learners. What happens when a student suddenly has only 15 minutes? And how can we divide our attention without teaching an imaginary middle-level student?

Finally, Quiz of the Week becomes a set of adaptable conversation questions for speaking practice.

Should English Teachers Speak Clearly or Naturally in Class? – S05E16 Aug 30, 2024
    Show notes

Should English teachers speak naturally in class, or pronounce every word and expression carefully? In this episode of How to English TEFL Podcast, we explore how to expose learners to authentic spoken English while helping them understand unfamiliar language.

Drawing on our teaching experience, we discuss when to explain an idiom, when to write language on the board or in the chat, and when to let learners work out meaning from context. Gav also shares an end-of-lesson routine that gives students a chance to ask about language they noticed.

Gav challenges Em to find shorter related words inside kangaroo words such as destruction, devilish and masculine. We then compare foundation, foundations, basement, cellar, basis and base, showing how pictures and examples can clarify confusing vocabulary.

Em demonstrates a science quiz that practises listening, speaking, present-simple facts and explaining ideas in your own words. We also consider how to help a highly motivated new student choose suitable books, podcasts, television programmes and homework.

Throughout the episode, we compete to include idioms naturally in our conversation. Could you adapt our Hide the Idiom challenge for your own English lesson?

How Do You Manage Mixed Levels and Set Up Classroom Tasks Clearly? – S05E15 Aug 16, 2024
    Show notes

What do we do when a learner knows a specialist word that we have never heard, or says their language has a word English seems to lack? In this episode of the How to English TEFL Podcast, we explore how curiosity, clear explanations and a few well-chosen questions can turn uncertainty into useful language practice.

We return to animal-group names, discuss paraphrasing and borrowed words, and consider how to teach specialist vocabulary when the learner is the subject expert. A single level label can also hide very different speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Em recommends noticing a serious mismatch early, while Gav considers what we can do when another class is unavailable.

Gav then gives Em a kitchen-vocabulary page and asks how she would set up a task. We work through a possible sequence: start with what learners know, reveal the pictures, clarify unfamiliar language and give the words a useful speaking purpose.

We also question how much “Do you speak English?” asks someone to judge about themselves. Could a polite, specific request make the conversation easier? Our Quiz of the Week finishes with wonderfully strange words about words, from loanwords and eggcorns to tmesis, zeugma and kangaroo words. Abso-freaking-lutely!

What Should You Do When a Listening Lesson Runs Out of Time? – S05E14 Aug 02, 2024
    Show notes

What should we do when a carefully planned listening lesson runs out of time before students get the chance to speak? In this episode, we explore that familiar classroom dilemma and ask whether a successful comprehension lesson always needs a follow-up discussion.

Em shares a lesson built around Cautionary Tales and the Swiss cheese model of accident prevention. We consider how listening can lead to meaningful workplace conversations, whether returning to a topic next week really works and when the comprehension work may already be enough.

We also compare business-casual teaching clothes and tackle for, since and from when a learner asks with just 15 minutes left. Gav suggests eliciting examples and leaving gaps for learners to complete, while Em connects time expressions with continuing and finished jobs.

There’s a virtual favourite-city tour, with local sights, food and souvenirs, plus a discussion about checking instructions as learners grow more confident. We explain why we refer private lesson requests from company learners back through the organisation, then debate classroom behaviour and finish with wonderfully strange animal group names.

    Questions answered:
    • Does every listening lesson need a speaking follow-up?
    • How can we explain for, since and from clearly?
    • When are instruction checks useful?
    • Should we accept private work from company students?

How Can Teachers Make Listening Tasks Easier for Students? – S05E09 May 24, 2024
    Show notes

How can you make a difficult listening task easier without removing the challenge? In this episode, we share ways to support learners by checking the order of questions, playing audio in shorter sections, adjusting the speed and using transcripts at the right moment.

We also talk about teaching a group with different needs and interests, repeating an activity one learner has already done, and why students sometimes stop attending lessons. Along the way, we discuss subtitles, Google Translate, misleading translations in formal emails, and a simple way to practise could have and couldn’t have involving rather a lot of muffins.
