EP171: The Big Dilemma Facing the Hair Industry, with Joe Mills Oct 05, 2020
Show notes The impact that the COVID-19 pandemic is having on the hair industry and high street is beginning to show. For many of us, it’s scary times ahead for our businesses. And for todays episode we’re addressing this very real and sobering topic with former guest of the show, Joe Mills.

With 50% less footfall for many cities and towns in the UK, both hair salons and barbershops are feeling the devastating effects of this on their businesses post lockdown. With a fast changing environment like never seen before for businesses, theirs a big dilemma facing the hair industry. Is that dilemma reducing outgoings, keeping the doors open or maybe pivoting the business model???

Returning back to the show today to discuss this topic in an open and very honest way is Joe Mills, a highly respected mens session stylist and owner of leading London hairdressers ‘The Lounge Soho’ and ‘Jo and Co Barbershop’. With workers and tourists not coming back into London in a COVID-19 world, Jo is seeing all around him the devastating effects of high street brands – big and small brands – closing down. And this is spreading to all areas of the UK.

As Joe says, “If the hair industry doesn’t change soon then we’re heading for a car crash!”

Rather than sitting there and waiting for that magic day when footfall comes flooding back into his business, Joe is fighting back through a new partnership with Shortcut App. This app is allowing him and his team to taking the professional outfit of his barbershop businesses directly into the clients homes. Joe will be sharing with us all today how this works, along with the debate on why now, more than ever, one voice is needed for an industry battling to keep it’s head above the water, just!

It’s a gripping and honest listen on the harsh realities facing the UK high street in 2020.

EP170: Why You Need to be Podcasting, with Kristina Russell Sep 28, 2020
Show notes Podcast listeners have grown by 37.5% over the last 3 years, whilst 55% of Americans have listened to podcasts. Yes, podcasting is getting big and shows no sign of slowing up. With this in mind isn’t it time your business or brand considers creating a podcast? For todays guest Kristina Russell, podcasting has become an essential part of her hair education business. Something she’s about to share with us all in this episode.

An exceptionally talented and truly dynamic artist and educator, Kristina Russell has been at the pinnacle of hairdressing education for more than two decades and has been privileged to be exposed to the many dimensions of the educational domain throughout her illustrious career. In June 2010, her creative influence on our industry earned her the coveted title ‘Australian Hair Expo Colour Technician of the Year’. And more recently, she has been announced as a Finalist in the category of Best Independent Educator of the Year in the 2020/21 Australian Hair Industry Awards.

Through workshops, digital and print media, her role as industry mentor has been not only to help hairdressers achieve their goals, but to provide them with flexible pathways for learning across a multitude of platforms. Not afraid of change and willingness to grab the power of a new age media, It’s little wonder then why Kristina got behind the mic to launch her ‘Colour Kristina Talks Podcast’.

Being part of the podcasting family, I’m a huge fan of Kristina’s podcast and approach to digital. She is part of a new generation of hairdressers that have seen the endless possibilities having your own podcast can bring. As Kristina says in our conversation today, “2020 is the year of the voice” and thats why you need a podcast.

So lets get you ready for the new age digital revolution – podcasting.

EP168: Mark Hayes – One of the Worlds Greatest Hair Educators Sep 14, 2020
Show notes When some of the worlds greatest hair educators are mentioned, todays very special guest Mark Hayes is often one of them named.

International Creative Director of the iconic Sassoon brand, Mark Hayes has inspired hairdressers around the world for over 40 years with his coaching and teaching. And today we’re to get a privileged insight into his story, going right back to when Mark began his love affair with hair in 1977 as he started out as an apprentice at the busy Sassoon London Salon on South Molton Street.

For so many hairdressers old and young, the name Sassoon still has the reputation that has been built on developing and providing world-class education at their academies and education centres around the globe. Founded by the most well known and highly regarded hairdresser of all time , Vidal Sassoon, holding the Sassoon International Creative Director role is one of the mosts revered positions to have in hairdressing.

In our conversation with Mark, we not only get to learn about how he went from the Sassoon apprentice program in 1979 to today leading the worldwide demand for Sassoon’s Hair Design, but also the psyche and characteristics that has seen he become one of the worlds greatest hair educators.

What I love more than anything else from our interview with Mark, is how he places the client at the centre of everything he stands for in hairdressing. Technical excellence, yes, but to be an intuitive communicator who’s goal is to make everyone of his clients feel happy with what ever he creates for them. This is a special listen with a very special hairdresser. Enjoy!
