EP167: Workshop Quality Hair on Salon Appointment Time, with Niall Colgan Sep 07, 2020
Show notes Confidence is the big hook of todays episode. More should I say, giving your team the confidence to know how good they really are, so that they can consistently deliver workshop quality hair on salon appointment time.

When it comes to giving your team that confidence, you need a inspiring leader to steer the ship correctly to it’s dock. And on this episode of the podcast, we’re speaking with a truly inspirational leader. His name is Niall Colgan of Niall Colgan Hairdressing in Limerick, Ireland. Recognise that name?

Back in 2019 we brought Niall onto the podcast. Little did we know then how big his podcast was to become. His hard-hitting story of how he battled with the addiction of alcohol, drugs and a suicide attempt grabbed the attention of many from around the world. To have the opportunity to bring Niall back onto the show is one I couldn’t resist.

For Niall, he is so passionate that all hairdressers should be paid what they are worth. But to do this he says, “You need to be the best versions of yourself, everyday!” By being this means we need to deliver the very best hair work to every single client. Niall and his team of motivated hairdressers are being installed with this.

Taking the inspiration of the hair work from the worlds leading educators, Niall Colgan Hairdressing are reproducing this workshop quality hair on the salon floor. In doing so means they are giving each client a high valued product and service every single time. And the result of this, hairdressers earning more money. Sounds good?

As you dive in to this episode, put these words of Niall’s into your head, “Be so good they cannot ignore you!”

EP166: How a Lockdown Sensation Overcame a Fear of Going LIVE, with Sheree Thompson Aug 31, 2020
Show notes If you want to get your hair work out there in 2020, then you need to ‘Go Live’. But heres the thing: for many of us the thought of going live strikes the fear of life out of us. For todays guest Sheree Thompson this is exactly what she had to overcome, too.

By stepping in front of the camera and hitting the ‘Go Live‘ button, salon owner and bridal hair specialist Sheree went against all her natural nerves by doing just this, but gee-whiz, it’s paid off big time for her.

After a Live appearance on the Facebook group, Hair Socials, over twenty thousand viewers were immersed in her bridal hair work. From this Live, Sheree’s standing as a leading bridal hair specialist went up to a higher level and that has seen her bridal online education courses gain many new students.

Now I want you to ask yourself something, “Am I prepared to step outside of my comfort zone and hit the button to ‘Go Live‘?” If thats you, then take the next step nearer to making it happen by listening into this episode. I know that Sheree’s words will give you the confidence to do just that.

EP164: My Ability is Stronger than my Disability, with Simon Townley Aug 17, 2020
    Show notes Grit. Perseverance. Determination.

It’s these characteristics that marks out high achievers from the rest. And one thing for absolute sure, todays guest Simon Townley has all of these characteristics in abundance. Listening in to todays episode, I’m confident it will make you take stock of what you have at your disposal– the ability to be great no matter what life can throw at you.

In lockdown I was blown away by the phenomenal success of a new Facebook group, Hair Socials. Offering a Live stream for hairdressers and barbers of all levels to educate thousands of its members, Hair Socials was the one of the names on everyones lips, including mine. I even had the pleasure to be interviewed by Simon – creator of ‘Hair Socials’. Curious to know more on Simon, I learned what an incredible and inspiring human being he really is. You’ll hear all of that today.

Born with a brittle bones disability called Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Simon was in a wheelchair to the age of 15, but after a series of operations it helped him walk again. As he say’s, “Just in time for my working life.”

What I love about Simon more that anything else, is that has never wanted to have people feel sorry for him. Its all about his ability being stronger than his disability. That is evident in everything he does. A salon owner, former L’Oreal ID artist, Matrix Artist, part of the the Xfactor hair team with Adam Reed, and travelling to France 2016 and Russia 2018 to cut the England teams hair, it’s fair to say no brittle bones will play an excuse for Simon not achieving his goals.

Now post lockdown Simon is currently starting new ventures that he can’t wait to share with you all today. So what are we waiting for, lets dive in!

EP163: How to Become a Successful YouTube Hairdresser, with The Life of Hair Aug 10, 2020
Show notes What does it take to become a successful YouTube hairdresser? Well this is what we are to learn about in todays episode as we are joined by the UK’s leading YouTube hairdresser, James Atkinson (aka The Life of Hair).

Currently with 30K subscribers and over one million downloads, it’s fair to say James knows a thing or two when it comes to finding success on YouTube. And today he’s going to share that journey with us all. I’m sure it will motivate you to why you need to be creating great video content on YouTube, too.

Tired and frustrated of going the traditional route of entering industry awards and competitions to grow his hairdressing profile, James instead turned his attentions to becoming a content video creator. How this has paid off for him! It was after hearing my interview with another successful UK YouTube hairdresser, Austin Thomson, sparked the moment for James to take his first tentative steps into becoming a video creator.

In our conversation today he will be explaining how he went from creating video content for Instagram to YouTube, and in doing so, helped him go on to be an educator across Europe plus adding financial freedom to his hairdressing career. Sounds good?

With YouTube dominating the long-form video content, it was the platform James saw best to demonstrate his teaching skills. But don’t think it’s for everyone as James says, “You can’t turn up to YouTube without no teaching skills. For me YouTube is an extension of what I’ve learned.”

With this in mind you need to understand why you want to be a YouTube hairdresser, what you will be sharing in your videos and what are your skills best suited too. Not sure, then fear not. This is something James will be helping you with today. Lets get stuck in!

EP161: How to Retail Successfully in 2020 with Emil McMahon Jul 27, 2020
Show notes Today’s guest Emil McMahon says,”I don’t believe hairdressers should sell anything.” Curious?

I want you to learn from this conversation with Emil that to retail successfully in 2020 is not giving hard sales that you’re uncomfortable with, but more on how you need to be educating your clients on the products that you are using and why. This is part of a great salon service that your clients both want and expect in 2020.

Drawing on his personal experiences, salon business and the challenges sales people face in their daily life, Emil is to share in this podcast today tips that can be used in salons and on social media that will help you overcome the challenges and fears of retailing. If generating more income in these tough times ahead sounds appealing, then we have it all wrapped up for you in this podcast.

A former guest of the show, Emil recently launched the Don’t Sell book. A book with 8 training decks looks at modern salon life, how internet shopping has changed the way we purchase products, how social media needs to develop to become a more successful marketing tool for salons and how communication needs to evolve to stay current and relevant in an ever challenging market.

4 years in the making, Don’t Sell can be used by salon owners and sales people in their daily working life. And today we’re to be spoilt as we get the training sessions that have been created as power-points to use alongside the information in the book that have been specifically designed to be short sharp power-bursts of useful information.

Looking at where salon life might be heading as the high streets in every village, town and city change can help salon owners future proof their business and encourage clients to visit more frequently. Introducing new elements to the building can create an experience for clients which encourages them to return more frequently and to spend more money. So if you wanting to know how to retail successfully in 2020, then stay locked in.

    EP160: Kai Wan – You’re Not ‘JUST’ a Hairdresser Jul 20, 2020
Show notes Be honest with me here. Have you ever been guilty of saying ‘I’m just a hairdresser’? Well let me tell you that you’re not just a hairdresser. You’re so much more!

Many of us including myself and today’s guest, Kai Wan, have at times all been guilty of saying this. Today I’ll be chatting with Kai on why we should value being a hairdresser, but not for the reasons of being an award-winning, educator, influencer, social media guru or anything else that we all seem to be transfixed on becoming. No, we’re focusing on why we should not loose focus of our greatest gift, being behind the salon chair and making our clients look and feel amazing.

With a dual-heritage of a Chinese father and a Welsh mother, Kai’s fathers initial reaction to him wanting to be a hairdresser could have stopped him right there in his tracks. But it didn’t. Kai has since gone on to become a highly respected hairdresser within the UK. Wanting to be the very best he could be, he certainly hasn’t under achieved. An award winning hairdresser and industry photographer, Wella brand ambassador and the co-owner with his with Jen of the 3 salon group P.Kai Hair in Peterborough, UK.

It’s safe to say Kai has achieved so much – something you’ll learn all about in todays episode.

However with so many great moments for Kai, to this day his proudest moments in his career are not the glossy front covers and winning awards. His proudest moments are how he has the gift to make people look and feel great. As he says, “Getting a page in a magazine or winning a competition is an ego boost. But the rewards you get for how you make your clients look and feel are so much greater.” High-fives to that Kai.

I hope that you come away from listening to this podcast by never again under estimating what you do. Remember ‘You’re not JUST a hairdresser‘, you’re so pivotal and important in people lives. Enjoy and be proud of what you do!

EP159: Always Wanting to be a Hairdresser, with Christel Barron Hough (Lundqvist) Jul 13, 2020
Show notes Has hairdressing been something you’ve always wanted to do? For todays guest Christel Barron-Hough (Lundqvist) founder and creative director of STIL, this is always what she has wanted to do since being a young girl growing up in Sweden.

If you’re looking for a reminder on why you wanted to be a hairdresser then this conversation will be the perfect listen. It will make you reconnect with the endless opportunities a hairdressing career can give you. You’ll hear Christel share her inspiring story of how she moved from her native Sweden to London as a teenager in 1999 and learn how she has grasped every opportunity since!

With an ambition of wanting to have an outstanding and successful career in hairdressing, by jiminy, Christel has certainly done just that. Having an innate sense of style, creative flair and technical skill, she has emerged as one of the industry’s most influential colour experts.

Winning numerous awards including the prestigious British Hairdressing Awards British Colour Technician of the Year Award, three times, Christel has also worked as a brand ambassador for international product houses including Wella Professionals and now, at TIGI, as Global Creative Technical Director for the last four years.

What comes over heaps in this conversation today is Christel’s love for everything she does in hairdressing and her salon business. Adopting her nordic aesthetic and style to both her hairdressing and business has helped Christel create an identity thats the cornerstone of everything she does. I love this and how she’s always surrounded herself with inspirational people. Interviewing Christel today has made me look back to why I originally fell in love with hairdressing, and I know it will do the same for you today. Let’s dive in!

EP158: Why the Hair Industry Must Change, with Farah Khan Jul 06, 2020
Show notes Discrimination and lack of opportunities for Black, Asian and minority ethnics (BAME) in 2020 is sadly still very real in the hair industry. In light of the recent events around the world, I feel it’s the right time to bring you this podcast covering this matter. Joining me for it is Farah Khan, an asian hairdresser who has worked in many leading salons. Sharing some of her personal experiences within the hair industry that includes discrimination and lack of opportunities Farah says, “This conversation is not comfortable but one we need to have.”

At 16 Farah started her hairdressing with Vidal Sassoon where she spent time assisting Mark Hayes and Edward Darley. On completing her training she went to explore the mainstream hairdressing world further. Unfortunately it was at this point she discovered a very big divide, no diversity and where she was never seen as part of the team. And even more alarmingly she was denied opportunities with some leading salon names and agencies due to her appearance of wearing a hijab (headscarfs) and abaya (loose over-garment).

With experiencing such negativity, Farah has become passionate that brands and the mainstream hair industry must make changes. By all becoming more inclusive, diversity being part of the hiring process, not afraid of dialogue and being ready to learn will all help in Farah’s mission to encourage those from her community to enter into our more open and inclusive hair industry world.

As Farah passionately says, “It is a constant struggle as my community are not fairly represented and hence fewer people entering the industry. I have been campaigning for change for a long time, when I see injustice I speak up and try to educate and create an environment of dialogue.”

Both myself and Farah hope that this podcast today will start the stepping stone towards change within our industry.
