EP202: The Barber Imposters with Paul Simmons May 31, 2021
Show notes A couple of months back I saw a Facebook post by a respected UK barber and a How To Cut It Patreon member, Paul Simmons. His post referred to our interview with Rino Ricco in Episode 192 and how some of the points we discussed in that talked of a misunderstanding to the barbering industry. So I had to invite Paul onto the podcast to get his viewpoints across. An advocate for everything British barbering is, Paul will passionately reveal why he get’s incensed by how many hairdressers do not understand the barbering industry.

This podcast I’m confident will spark up heated conversations. We we also get to learn why Paul feels the industry is being infiltrated by imposters and fraudsters. He says, “It’s time for these imposters to pack up and go back to the careers they walked out of. 2021 will be the biggest year yet for the barbering industry, but also the one with the most turmoil. Barbershops will need to be more professional, get registered with some sort of governing body and start to pay tax, decent wages and charge for their services accordingly.”

Starting his career as a barber in 1976 in a small barbershop in Wolverhampton, Paul has gone on to become owner of Simmons Barbershops and works as an ambassador for a leading scissor brand, along with working on shows around the world in his the former role as Artistic Director for Wahl GmbH (Germany). Having such a barber expert on the show, I had to also take up this opportunity to hear Paul’s take on the future direction of the barbering industry.

We’re going to get all of this today, so take a coffee (or tea, or water) break and let’s chat. And if you want more on this conversation with Paul, tune into this weeks Xtra Show HERE.

    EP200: Robert Lobetta – A Hairdressing Great May 17, 2021
Show notes Today we celebrate our 200th Episode and with such a milestone I had to bring you a very special guest for this one. Welcome Robert Lobetta, one of the most iconic and greatest names ever to come out of world hairdressing. To have Robert join me for this 200th episode caps a fantastic 4 years plus of bringing you the HTCI podcast.

In his first interview for three and half years, I was humbled and honoured to have him share on our show not only his personal thoughts to the hair industry in 2021, but to have him talk openly on how his journey went from a rebel starting out in 1970’s London to going on to become the Internationally recognised icon in the hair and beauty industry who is much loved and respected around the globe by hairdressers of all ages. And if this wasn’t enough for you, we also get his vision for the hairdressing future.

Robert self-confesses that he has never really considered himself as just a hairdresser, as for him hair was an art project. He never considered what he did was just hair, photography, film, or art, because he continually looked at Life as one big Art project. Something we get to hear all about today.

This podcast is one that you can’t afford to miss as we are in the company of a hairdressing great! So what are we waiting for, headphones on and hit that play button.

EP199: Tim Hartley and The New Now May 03, 2021
Show notes Put quite simply, todays guest Tim Hartley is regarded as one of the world’s greatest hairdressers. After a 30 year career at Vidal Sassoon culminating in his renowned role as International Creative Director Tim left the corporate world to concentrate on his own stunning visions of hair design. In this podcast today we will not only get to learn about Tim’s rich heritage in hairdressing that led him to this role at Vidal Sassoon, but how he sees the hair industry moving forward.

For over 30 years he’s been inspiring generations of young hairdressers with his passionate approach to hair, cutting edge aesthetic and technical expertise. His rise to the stratosphere of international hair design has been a remarkable one starting in the city of Manchester in the late 1970s, one of the centres of avant-garde punk style and ending on a global stage.

I feel it’s really important to observe and understand the stories behind our industries most iconic names as we learn not only of their wins, but of their struggles too. By developing your knowledge of the hairdressing history means developing your knowledge for a more fulfilling and successful career as we hurtle towards the new now in a post-covid world!

    EP198: A Podcast for Hairdressing Students Apr 26, 2021
    Show notes

In this podcast today I will be sharing about the pathway a hairdressing career can give to hairdressing students. I believe it is essential that we help the next generation of hairdressers understand what is available to them, but also what they have to do to get there. By understanding this I truly believe anything is possible.

What got me interested in a career in hairdressing was when I first went to Salon International back in 1984. The buzz I felt that day made want to become a hairdresser. 34 years later I’m still fully engaged and part of this amazing industry. Thats why I’m keen to share the many variations a hairdressing career give you, as I know that not only can it help get more younger people into hairdressing, but also keep those who a possibly on the verge of falling out of love with the industry by simply becoming more engaged again.

You’ll hear about the wide variety of options available in a hairdressing that includes working in the salon as successful stylist, being a freelancer, entering competitions, working on stage, getting involved in the world of media ,and so much more.

What I’ve provided in this podcast is the sort of information I wanted to hear when I was that 16 year old student going to my local hairdressing college on day release. I really hope it inspires many of the students that listen in to this today, and I encourage all training providers, lecturers and salon owners to get their students and trainees to listen in. It could make that difference on them staying in the industry or not by carving out a lifelong and happy career within the hair industry.

EP197: Go Beyond the Chair Apr 19, 2021
Show notes As we fast approach our 200th episode it’s made me stop and reflect on how I’ve I got to where I am are today with How To Cut It. Today I’ll be sharing this with you.

From recording our very first episode back in March 2017 followed by my interview with Tom Connell, I seriously could have never anticipated the journey I was about to embark on back then. Speaking and hosting at shows across Europe, an exclusive partnership deal with Wella Professionals, a rapidly growing community and now producing creative content for leading names are just a small sample to some of the brilliant things I’m now experiencing. And all became possible through the power of podcasting.

From an everyday hairdresser working behind the chair 5 days a week in my boutique rural salon, the pathways that has opened up to me has been staggering. With all of this has seen my hairdressing career become more dynamic and varied. I love it, and you too can add this variation and success to your hairdressing career.

Today I’ll be sharing how by discovering your uniqueness could pivot you in ways that you never knew was possible. Take a listen to hear how it’s happened for me, and how it can happen for you too, but only if you are prepared to work hard for it.

EP196: Ben Brown – Finding Your Life Purpose Apr 12, 2021
Show notes Over the last year everything has changed for us all around the globe. As hair professionals being forced to stop working has given for many of us the chance to reflect on where we are at it within our lives and asking ourselves: have we found our life purpose?

I know, a heavy question but as we head back to doing hairdressing again, I wonder if slowing down and stopping has turned your head to to the possibility of new opportunities, new goals, new journeys? Curious, I just had to ask this question to former guest of the show and leading international educator, the brilliantly talented, Ben Brown.

When I last spoke to Ben in 2018, it was so exciting to learn about his first steps into becoming a hairdressing educator. Listening back to that podcast, it struck me that being an hair educator really gave Ben his life purpose of sharing both his love and expertise of cutting hair shapes. Fast forward two and half years and one pandemic later, where is Ben now at in his career and has his life purpose changed since we last spoke? Well, that’s what we will learn all about today.

I hope after listening in to this great conversation with Ben will help you look at where you are going in not just your hairdressing career, but in your life too. In this most challenging of years it may just have given you the headspace to pivoting your life towards a completely new direction. I would love to know what that could be by dropping me a DM on my Instagram account @domlehane.

EP195: The Mindful Hairdresser with Jordanna Cobella Apr 05, 2021
Show notes In this weeks HTCI podcast we welcome back owner of Cobella Salon and author of ‘The Mindful Hairdresser’ book, Jordanna Cobella.

Jordanna will be sharing with us all today how this book empowers hairdressers, stylists, and salon owners to optimise the synergy between human connection and technical ability. The examples and proven methods of communication and cues she teaches allow the day-to-day lives of a hairdresser to run more smoothly, prevent burnout and drastically improve the service for clients.

It is often said that hairdressers are the nation’s unofficial therapists and have historically been part of ‘confessional booths’.

This unwritten responsibility can sometimes leave those in the industry feeling out of depth or overwhelmed. As creatives, we are constantly investing in various ways to improve our technical skills, but are we ignoring the part of the profession that comprises a huge part of the service? The emotional intelligence and psychology involved in the everyday life of serving the public is often overlooked and taken for granted.

Serving the public in any capacity, especially in fashion and style, requires emotional intelligence, a good understanding of psychology, and non-verbal communication. The intimacy of changing the way someone looks, building rapport, and psychologically reading your clients is an unspoken skill we are expected to pick up along the way. This is the topic and skill we will addressing today.
